THANKSGIVING TRIVIA
• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state.
4
• Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and

strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Copper Creek Meadows Community invited troops at all levels to send representatives to our first Girl Planning Board meeting for the year. Girls were asked to present their ideas for events they would like to see held by our Community. They had lots of great ideas! Thank you to all the girls who attended for their suggestions. Girl planning is an important aspect of Girl Scouting and one that began with our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, back in 1912. Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday was on October 31st and many troops celebrate that day with a birthday party or other special event in her honor. A Brownie Try-it dance workshop was hosted by two Cadette Girl Scouts from troop 14289 in October. The Cadettes are members of the Girl Scout Green Starlettes dance and drill team. They held the event as part of their Silver Award project. They will be purchasing new toys for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. Troop 113017 attended the Compassion Experience at Copperfield Church. Using iPod and head sets, the girls were able to participate in an interactive journey through the daily lives of children in the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Uganda and India This helped them to experience other cultures and better understand the impact of poverty in the developing world. The junior “Flowers” badge workshop held at the LSC-Lone Star College in October attracted area Girl Scouts to learn more about this subject. Brownie Girl Scouts will have their chance at the “Brownie Bugs” Badge workshop scheduled in November.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others.

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows:
October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

In this six-session videobased study, Lysa uses her signature mix of transparency, Scripturelaced insight and “been there” humor to suggest usable strategies for making wise decisions day by day. SESSION TITLES: 1. Set Your Heart to Wisdom 2. Establish a Pattern of Wisdom 3. Practice Wisdom 4. Predetermine Your Best Yes 5. Avoid the Traps of People Pleasing 6. Build a Best Yes Legacy

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWS
713-896-0074 AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR VISITS CYPRESS CHRISTIAN
American Ninja Warrior competitor Daniel Gil made a special appearance at the middle school chapel service at CCS, thrilling his young audience. Daniel describes himself on his Twitter account as a Christ follower, Ninja Warrior Athlete (Season 7 Competitor), worship leader and staff/trainer at Iron Sports Gym. The students in grades six through eight were excited to hear what this talented 22-yearold had to say about his life and his experiences on the television show “American Ninja Warrior.” Daniel shared with the students from Jeremiah 29:11 and Proverbs 3:5-6. He told them about his decision at an early age to accept Jesus as his personal Savior. He also shared about his amazing journey of discovering his gifts and talents and watching as God provided work and opportunities to use those gifts and talents for God’s glory. Everyone in the gym was impressed by Daniel’s humility and his ability to communicate with students.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN STUDENTS EARN 2015 NATIONAL MERIT RECOGNITION
Seniors Emily Mahan, Jordon Coates and Amber Dingman each received the Commended Student designation in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program - an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit® Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) - a test which serves as an initial screen of more than 1.5 million entrants each year–and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. CCS is proud of these students and their accomplishments and looks forward to hearing about their many successes in the future.
CYPRESS CHRISTIAN KINDERGARTENERS ENJOY UMBRELLA PARADE
Kindergarteners at Cypress Christian School learned about short vowel sounds. They enjoyed learning through hands-on activities and special projects to complement their curriculum. They also enjoyed a very special Umbrella Parade to celebrate the letter “u.” All four Kindergarten classes paraded through the elementary hallways and out onto the playground with their umbrellas high in the air. As they marched, they made the short “u” sound. Learning phonics is fun!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
