WHEATSTONE NEWS WHEATSTONE VILLAGE COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 17th. The residents of Coppercreek I, Coppercreek II, Cloverfield and Copperstone are having a garage sale from the hours of 8 AM until 1 PM. Wheatstone is located on Longenbaugh between Highway 6 and Barker Cypress. Last year over 40 homes participated.

WHEATSTONE VILLAGE/COPPERFIELD CRIME WATCH

The Wheatstone residents need to call 713-221-6000 (choose Option 1) or 911 for an Emergency. HCSO Sergeant Rogers is getting requests for suspicious vehicles and persons on Nextdoor.com and it is not a dispatch option, only for information. Success stories from our local HCSO Deputies: On Saturday, August 1, 2015, an observant citizen called in a suspicious vehicle occupied by 2 males sleeping in the vehicle in the 7400 block of Field Ridge Drive in a Copperfield area park. The citizen gave a detailed description of the males, the vehicle and provided the license plate number to the HCSO Dispatch Center. As Deputy Davis responded to the location, he conducted a computer check on the license plate and discovered it was reported stolen, taken in an aggravated robbery in the 6900 block of Lakeview Haven at approximately 3 AM on August 1, 2015 by 2 males with handguns. When Deputy Davis arrived he observed the stolen vehicle and the 2 males inside. He held the males at gunpoint until his backup arrived approximately 30 seconds later. The 2 males were taken into custody without any injuries

to the deputies or the suspects. Charges were filed in this case. A big “THANK YOU” to the citizen and a JOB WELL DONE by the deputies is due in this case. Working together we can make Harris County a safer place to live and work. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! On Sunday 7/26/15, a female suffered some minor injuries when she was assaulted and robbed by a male as she left a restaurant in the 7000 block of N SH6. Deputies responded and immediately began searching the area for the suspect vehicle. Copperfield Deputy J. Dixon observed the vehicle and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The pursuit proceeded east on FM 529, east on US 290, to Loop 610 South, eventually going all the way around to Loop 610 North at I-45 where spike strips were successfully deployed and the suspect’s vehicle disabled. The male suspect was taken into custody without any injuries or vehicle accidents being reported due to the pursuit. A firearm was found inside the suspect’s vehicle. The deputies did an excellent job in catching this suspect and preventing any other person from injury during this event. GREAT JOB GUYS! If you want more information about your Copperfield Community come to the next meetings held at the Copperfield Community Center, 15409 Willow River Drive, Houston, TX 77095. (3

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures

2

are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/ dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

CHILD ABUSE & NEGLECT REPORTS

The start of the school year can be a new and exciting time for children, but it can lead to more reports of abuse and neglect as faculty, staff and other parents notice signs of maltreatment children may have suffered during the break. Teachers and school officials are mandated reporters, so it is not unusual for there to be a spike in reports when school resumes. The increase in reports often leads to more children entering the overburdened child welfare system, creating a need for more CASA volunteers to speak up for these children. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers are everyday members of the community that are specially trained and appointed by judges to advocate for children’s best interests in court. These volunteers are appointed to one child or sibling group and speak to any and all relevant contacts in their lives, such as teachers, foster parents and therapists. CASA volunteers get to know these children individually and gather information about their unique physical, emotional and educational needs. They relay their recommendations to the court in an effort to help these children move out of the temporary system and into safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. In Fort Bend County there have been 220 children in the child welfare system this year. Child Advocates of Fort Bend has served 100% of the children, but we’ve seen a 30% increase of children coming into care this year alone, a number that is likely to grow now that the school has begun. Child Advocates of Fort Bend needs more compassionate, dedicated volunteers to speak up for these vulnerable children. Please consider being a voice for children in need by becoming a CASA volunteer. DIRECTIONS Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When hot, whisk in flour. Continue whisking until the roux has cooked to the color of chocolate milk, 8 to 10 minutes. Be careful not to burn the roux. If you see black specks in the mixture, start over. Stir onion, bell pepper, celery and sausage into the roux; cook 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook another 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning; blend thoroughly. Pour in the chicken broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chicken and simmer 1 hour more. CYCHRISTIAN YEARBOOK STAFF CREATING INTERACTIVE EDITION

A group of students from the Cypress Christian School yearbook class, led by journalism teachers, attended the Jostens Summer Yearbook Workshop at South Shore Harbor Resort in Clear Lake, Texas. Students focused on how to improve the school’s yearbook, which will include links to videos in this year’s edition. Breakout sessions provided information about how to choose a captivating theme, write strong headlines and create descriptive captions. Students in the photography track were taught by award-winning photojournalists, who provided encouraging feedback about their photos and videos. Students ended the workshop by completing the design for the 2015-2016 yearbook cover which highlights the yearbook theme - “Building Our Story.”

GIRL SCOUTS GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Girl Scouts from Copper Creek Meadows have been enjoying all kinds of summer activities. Girl Scout Junior Troop 16468 from Birkes Elementary school has been having an especially busy summer. The girls attended the Bull’s Eye Resident camp and also the Girl Scout Day Camp held at the Houston Farm and Ranch Club. They also enjoyed a night of roller skating and a troop circus visit to the Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey Circus. A “Pottery Fun” workshop was an opportunity to explore a new art form. The girls finished off their troop summer fun with a Space Center Camp-In. Now that school has started, they will be working on Journey project priming and painting metal trash containers at Birkes Elementary. It sounds like these very active and enthusiastic Girl Scouts will be adding quite a collection of patches to their vests and sashes! Many thanks to all those volunteers, Program Aides and Camp Aides who helped to make the Jersey Village Twilight Camp a success! Copper Creek Meadows Community is a part of the Cy-Fair East, Region Four area. The region has a Rallyhood site and Facebook page for Cadette through Ambassador Girl Scouts to provide additional opportunities for our older girls. Check with your troop leader for more information. Cadette Girl Scouts in Area Four will be planning and hosting a Brownie Quest Journey workshop in November in order to earn their Leadership in Action award. Troop 16399 has had several projects to raise funds for the Houston SPCA as they work toward achieving their Bronze Award. Troop 16503 planned their year of events and ideas at their first troop meeting for the new school year. They are also planning to start work

14

on their Bronze Award. Copper Creek Meadows Community already has a Leader/Daughter event on the schedule for December 5th. This will be held locally. Be on the lookout for more information! Our Fall Product sale began on September 11th. In person order taking continues through October 4th. Girls can continue to sell online until October 25th through the girls’ online storefront. Three new products this year are Black Forest Trail Mix, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels and Honey Mustard Pretzel Mix. Leaders who attended our community summit meeting in September had a chance to sample all those delicious treats. Everyone agreed it was a great incentive for coming to the meeting! Thanks to Crystal Lawrenz for serving as our Fall Product Manager! Copper Creek Meadows Community would like to thank Andrel Bridgewater, Jennifer Aldaco and all those involved in our Rally and other recruitment efforts. We especially thank those Girl Scout troops and their leaders who provided activities (and a chance to see what Girl Scouts do!) at our Rally nights. Our Rally Nights have been continuing throughout September and the first week of October. We have been forming new troops and placing girls in existing troops. If you were unable to attend one of the Rally Nights, it is not too late to sign up! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Older girls whose schedules do not

allow for participation in a troop or group may register as “Juliettes” or “individually registered girls.” Don’t forget that we always need leaders and other adult volunteers! We can’t have Girl Scout troops without them. You don’t need to be a super hero or a park ranger- you don’t even have to have children! You do need to have an interest in working with girls, pass a background check and take some training. Only a little is required to get started, but a lot more is available when you are ready for it. Please contact Marlo Folwell - 713-854-9426 (marlo.folwell@c-a-m. com for more information. You may also check out the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, www.gssjc.org or call the Council office at 713-292-0300.

BOY SCOUTS CY-FALLS STUDENT JOSH GILLIAM OF TROOP 202 EARNS EAGLE SCOUT AWARD

On Sunday, July 19th, Josh Gilliam, son of Jim & Pam Gilliam of Copperfield, earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. Josh is a member of Troop 202, a troop sponsored by Middlegate Village Homeowner’s Association. Troop 202 meets regularly on Mondays at 7 PM at Copperfield Church. For his Eagle project and at the recommendation given by Josh’s church Copperfield Church, Josh chose to build a work table/cabinet for the church staff’s resource room. The cabinet was used to replace a limited, portable 6’ table. The cabinet was constructed of ¾” oak plywood with an attractive laminate countertop. The bottom consisted of six cubby-hole shelves (3 in front and back) which will be used for storage. Josh used his funds to purchase the materials from Home Depot. With the help of adult and youth volunteers from Troop 202, as well as scout friends from other troops, Josh organized the crew for the building and installation of the work table/cabinet. Upon being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, Josh has thus-far successfully earned 32 merit badges, completed NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), held numerous leadership positions in Troop 202 including Senior Patrol Leader in 2013, participated in three High Adventure trips including Florida Sea Base (2013), Chisolm Trail (2013) and Philmont (2014) and camped with his troop on countless weekends. Josh, 16 years old and in 11th grade, is an outstanding percussionist and a proud member of the CyFalls High School Golden Eagle Marching Band and Drumline! After high school, he plans to pursue music as a profession. His dream is to become successful percussionist with a Drum Corp or large symphony orchestra.

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely re-vamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Campy and fun, it is the story of two sexually repressed women who find freedom and passion in the vampiric world in the late days of Victorian London. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004.
