TRASH PICK-UP DAYS

Wednesdays and Saturdays are the Lone Oak scheduled trash pick-up days. Please do not set your garbage out early. We continue to see many residents put trash out 2-3 days before trash day. Please keep your garbage out of sight until the night before or the day of the scheduled pick up. Also, please be courteous and do not block the sidewalks with your bags and or trash bins and remove them in a timely manner after pick up.

HIT THE BRAKES…

Speeding in Lone Oak has been a hot topic of discussion lately. There have been numerous reports of speeding and of running stop signs. We have notified the Sheriff of these reports and have asked that tickets be issued to offenders. Several surrounding schools and residents have purchased kid alert safety signs to be placed in front of their homes and or buildings to remind people to slow down. If you would like to purchase a safety sign, here are a couple websites that sell the signs, www.kaplantoys.com and www. discountschoolsupply.com

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

2014 and various projects are currently underway to make it a memorable 2014 - 2015 school year. Details are now available on the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/75. The first event of the celebration will be a Diamond Jamboree at the Berry Center in August, 2014. During this event, we will identify 75 honorees and we need your help. The anniversary honoree designation committee is looking for people or families who have significantly impacted the CFISD community and district during the last 75 years. We want to particularly identify those that have truly captured the anniversary philosophy: “Our children. Our schools. Our community.” Please consider submitting a nomination and review the attached application. For more information on the anniversary, email 75th@cfisd.net.

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS SERVICE UNIT

Copper Creek Meadows Service Unit held a “Taste of Girl Scouting” event in October for new Girl Scouts. The girls attending made beaded bracelets and began to learn the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Older Girl Scouts helped to teach some favorite Girl Scout songs, like “Princess Pat” and “Yogi Bear.” The audience participated in telling a story about Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low Many thanks to all who helped with the event and all who attended! Our Leader/Daughter event took place early in November at Rocky River Ranch in Wimberley. Girls and their leader moms enjoyed some special time together in a variety of camp activities. The talent show and Dutch Oven cookoff are always popular events. Hiking, playing in the river and some time spent shopping in Wimberley helped round out the weekend.

Lone Oak

November also saw a chance for Girl Scout leaders to visit and learn from each other in a “café” event. Leaders have also been busy taking training classes and learning new skills. Those who attended the Council ETC (Every Thing Covered) may not actually have covered EVERYTHING... but there was certainly a lot to choose from! Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following elementary schools (and their corresponding middle and high schools): Wilson, Metcalf, Lieder, Tipps, Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting activities are open to our older Girl Scouts. We have riding and sailing programs, a JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery) program, dance and drill teams, choirs, backpacking groups and many other programs. You can check out the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website at www. gssjc.org. Contact Dianne Massie (Dianne.massie@att.net) or call 281-5509148 for more information.

Girls also brought donations to benefit patients at Texas Children’s Hospital’s West Campus. Many thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who made this happen!

RELAY FOR LIFE® TEAMS ALREADY FORMING FOR APRIL 25, 2014 EVENT!!

The American Cancer Society’s popular fundraising event in the fight against cancer, Relay For Life®, is now forming both business and personal teams for the April 25, 2014 Cy-Fair event. We are also seeking volunteers, cancer Survivors and CareGivers for the Cy-Fair Relay. Anyone interested in signing up or learning more about how you can help in the fight against cancer can go to www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx. At Relay For Life® events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer - just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year! Relay For Life® teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland, will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.
