Take Precautions Against Crime during Holidays
The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents:
Happy Holidays! December 2012
• Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your

house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal

items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday.

CHRISTMAS DIET TIPS
Christmas doesn’t have to throw you off track. There are a number of things that you can do to satisfy your cravings and still have a weight gain-free holiday.
Control fire ants for a full year! Call for details.

• ‘Tis the season for Christmas shopping. Embrace going to the mall and be sure you walk from one end to the other. Not only that, but you’ll probably not find a parking space close to the mall. If you do - don’t take it. Instead park as far away as you can and walk. Be sure you carry your packages with you. All of that added exercise can help to burn calories during the holiday season. • Host your own party. Its inevitable that you will be invited to parties at Christmas and everyone knows what kind of treats find their way onto the table at such parties. Why not take the bull by the horns and host your own party? That way you can control the foods that are offered. If you do go to another’s Christmas party, offer to bring something and then bring a healthy Christmas snack that will tempt you. • Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol in and of itself isn’t necessarily fattening. It has seven calories per gram (as opposed to four calories per gram in carbohydrates and proteins and nine calories per gram in fats). Alcohol, however, is metabolized differently in your body than other macronutrients. Alcohol is always metabolized ahead of anything else that you eat, so it can put your diet on hold. If you do have an alcoholic beverage, stick to simple drinks without a lot of sugar or heavy ingredients. A glass of dry wine or a spirit served neat or on ice are better bets than eggnog, which is loaded with sugar, fat, calories and alcohol. • Control your portion sizes. If you simply can’t pass up that piece of fudge, then have just a small square. • Make smart substitutions. If you’re still craving that fudge, you may wish to satisfy that fudge craving with a small square of dark chocolate, which is rich in antioxidants and lower in sugar and fat than a square of fudge. • Don’t shop hungry. It may be an old axiom, but it is a good one. If you go to the grocery store hungry, you are far more likely to cave in to temptation and bring home foods that will tempt you to go astray. Even the best laid diet plans have been thrown off by a gingerbread cookie or a slice of pie. Eat a healthy snack before you go shopping and shop with a list. • Don’t keep temptations around the house. It’s difficult enough navigating the office and the parties, but if every time you open the refrigerator you stare down a pumpkin pie, there’s a good chance you’ll crack. If you must have holiday treats in your house, try baking up some healthy holiday desserts and keeping those on hand. • Be sure to get plenty of exercise. The holiday season can be busy and exhausting. Sometimes it just seems like you don’t have the time or the energy to exercise. Ironically, one of the ways to fix flagging energy is by exercising. Don’t skip on your regular exercise routine no matter how busy you are. Even if you only have 30 minutes, take those 30 minutes and get active. Walk around your neighborhood and look at Christmas lights. Go outside and build a snowman with the kids. It doesn’t have to be formal exercise, as long as you are moving.

Hanukkah
In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.
Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.
New Year Celebrations Can Bring Danger
The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations can often be fraught with dangers to both people and property. If you plan to use fireworks, please do so in such a way that the debris does not find its way onto your neighbor’s roof or their yard or driveway. Exercise extreme caution so that you do not inadvertently set a neighbor’s home on fire. After you have finished with your fireworks display, clean up the mess so that it is not left as an eyesore for the neighbors to clean. Please confine fireworks to reasonable hours. Fireworks after 1 AM are annoying to most of your neighbors.
4
If you have children, please closely supervise them. Each year at New Year’s and in July we read of children maimed or killed by fireworks. If you must use fireworks, exercise sober care and watch your children carefully. If you drink, don’t drive. The Sheriff’s Department and DPS will be conducting stepped up programs to lower or eliminate the incidents involving drunk drivers.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon. Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership. Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.
CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients.

Mayde Creek High School MCHS LAUNCHES THEATRICAL SEASON WITH 3 PLAYS AT ONCE
Just weeks into the school year, Mayde Creek High School Theatre Company was already well into simultaneous rehearsals for the first three plays of the 2012 - 2013 theatrical season, dubbed The Season Behind the Curtain. The season opened October 18th with Noises Off by Brian Frayn. Deemed “the funniest farce ever written” by The New York Times, Noises Off offers a backstage look at a company of British actors during the rehearsal and subsequent tour of a ridiculous and ill-fated farce called Nothing On. Each of the three acts of Noises Off contains a performance of the first act of Nothing On, where the characters forget lines, miss cues and fuss with bothersome props, which include several plates of sardines. Directed by theatre teacher Tammy Reed, Noises Off featured an impressive two-story, student-built set designed to rotate 360 degrees twice during the show. The following weekend, MCHS Theatre Company presented a family-friendly double feature: Final Dress Rehearsal by Jack Frakes and Cinderella by Sally Netzel. The first one-act play follows the antics of an amateur theatre’s final dress rehearsal of Cinderella. Desperately trying to pull the show together, comedy ensues. The second one-act play tells a more traditional although equally hilarious version of the classic children’s story Cinderella and features some of the ugliest step sisters you ever saw. “It’s been challenging rehearsing three plays all at once,” said student director Adrianna Adams. “But it’s great to have everyone in the department busy learning.”
