NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Happy New Year! If you’re reading this, you made it through the Holiday’s (hopefully) in stride! Whether you kicked off the New Year by stuffing yourself with leftovers and eggnog or by getting a head start on your weight loss goals with a juice in hand - 2016 is here and it’s going to be a good one. But it can be the best one yet if you add this to your resolutions list: Participate, participate and participate in your Creek Bend Estates community! Please note that we cannot ensure the success and fellowship of the neighborhood and community without you. There’s no doubt that time is not always by our side with work life and family life being as busy as it is, but we can all carve in an hour or two every couple of months to get together with each other.
Unpaid dues lead to several thousands of dollars in lawyers and collections fees, which in turn can drive up assessment fees. We understand that times are difficult - and if necessary, we will work with you to make a payment plan for your assessment. Please contact KPM for more details. And as always, if you are interested in participating in these events or volunteering your time as a “Street Ambassador” by recruiting members to our neighborhood events or helping to organizing them, please contact KMP Management at mgmt@kpmmanagement.com or call 281-685-3090. If you haven’t already, make it your new year’s resolution to sign up for the email blast from our website at www.creekbendestates.com to stay up to date on all the neighborhood happenings.
Let’s start with a challenge. Do you think you can cook? Let’s test your skills against your neighbors in our first annual Creek Bend Estates Chili Cook-Off Competition! Keep reading for more details and how to participate.
The CBE Board of Director’s meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 PM at the KPM Management offices. Please call KPM Management (281-685-3090) if you would like to be in attendance.
There will be several other opportunities to get together throughout the year, so stay tuned and let us know if you have any ideas to socialize and network.
Finally, we will never know what is on your mind unless you tell us. Please reach out to us if you have any questions, comments or concerns about anything in the neighborhood.
Neighborhood assessments are now due. Please keep in mind that in order to prevent yearly dues from going up, we need your cooperation.
Best wishes, CBE Board of Directors

MAKING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS STICK
Lose weight? Check. Start exercising? Check. Stop smoking? Check. It can be daunting when your list of New Year’s Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety. When your holiday decorations are packed up and stored away, the frustration of an unused gym membership or other reminders of failed resolutions can make the later winter months feel hopeless. However, it is important to remember that the New Year isn’t meant to serve as a catalyst for sweeping character changes. It is a time for people to reflect on their past year’s behavior and promise to make positive lifestyle changes. “Setting small, attainable goals throughout the year, instead of a singular, overwhelming goal on January 1 can help you reach whatever it is you strive for,” says psychologist Lynn Bufka, PhD. “Remember, it is not the extent of the change that matters, but rather the act of recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward it, one step at a time.” By making your resolutions realistic, there is a greater chance that you will keep them throughout the year, incorporating healthy behavior into your everyday life. APA offers these tips when thinking about a News Year’s resolution: START SMALL Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment.

CHANGE ONE BEHAVIOR AT A TIME Unhealthy behaviors develop over the course of time. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones requires time. Don’t get overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time. TALK ABOUT IT Share your experiences with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of coworkers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and less intimidating. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. ASK FOR SUPPORT Accepting help from those who care about you and will listen strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are uniquely trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviors and address emotional issues. NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR AWARENESS MONTH
January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month. This month is a special time to emphasize the importance of blood donation, to recognize past and present donors and to encourage donors to give blood and platelets for local patients in need. Winter can be a difficult time for blood donations across the country as a reduction in turnout can put local and national blood inventories at a critical low. Do something good for the community and donate blood this month!

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.

• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Theater, Arts & Music
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: January 29th-February 21st: “Forever Plaid” On their way to see the Beatles’ American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, a quartet of high school friends’ musical dreams begin and quickly end after a car crash involving a busload of Catholic schoolgirls. March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, sixfoot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.
