NATIONAL ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH
November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year. In support of families everywhere who are fighting this disease, consider stepping in and helping out by becoming an advocate, making a donation to Alzheimer’s research or by offering support to a patient or family caregiver.

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

MEMBERS CHOICE CREDIT UNION DONATES BOOKS AND BEARS TO SCHMALZ ELEMENTARY
Members Choice Credit Union made 650 Schmalz Elementary students very happy. Through their newly created “Books and a Buddy” initiative, the credit union gave backpacks filled with seven books, along with a bear to snuggle with while reading, to students in kindergarten through second grade. “Books and a Buddy” was months in the making. When Members Choice conceived the idea, employees and customers began donating and collecting books. The credit union purchased over 9,000 books then collaborated with Half Price Books on Highway 6 and 529 who donated 300 gently read books. In addition, Venus Construction donated their “muscle” to pick-up and deliver all the boxes and bags of books to get where they needed to go. “Books and a Buddy” backpacks were handed out to students on Curriculum Night held on September 1st.
Mayde Creek High School MAYDE CREEK HIGH SCHOOL BOWLERS
Mayde Creek HS is looking for bowlers who would like to join our bowling team. Last year, Trey Viator was ranked 5th for the boys in the district and Vanessa Treviño was ranked 8th for the girls in the district, they both represented Mayde Creek HS at Regionals in the All Star District Team. This organization meets after school at Times Square on Grand Parkway. Youth can earn scholarship funds and learn the sport of bowling. We prepare students for fun bowling, league bowling, HS bowling and collegiate bowling. Last year, the Saturday league gave out $36,000 dollars in scholarships to students in Katy. Every student is eligible not matter the grade level. You can also earn your letterman jacket. The fall league started in September. The Girls Cross Country teams competed at The Caldwell Invitational CrossCountry Meet on Saturday, September 19th. The Katy Wine Fest will celebrate wines from across the United States, including several Texas wineries. In total, more than 60 wines will be featured at this year’s Katy Wine Fest. Additionally, many of Katy’s finest eateries will offer light bites and delectable treats to event guests. No Label Brewery will also be onsite sampling different brews in the Beer Garden. The talented Chris Austin Martinez will provide the musical entertainment. An exciting silent auction and Big Board auction will feature unique items with proceeds directly benefiting The Brookwood Community. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse.
