SAFETY SCHOOL REMINDERS
Precinct 5 has reached out to several school districts within our area in an effort to address some of the concerns they face throughout the school year. Deputy Constables will be aiding school district police in providing traffic enforcement, as well as providing a police presence in and around various schools. I would like to share some suggestions with all drivers that will not only help you, but will hopefully make the roadways and school zones safer for everyone throughout the school year. Drivers should bear in mind the special safety needs of pedestrians, especially our children. This becomes critical in and around school’s zones. Generally, pedestrians have the right-of-way at all intersections; therefore, you as a driver are obligated to exercise extreme care and caution to avoid striking pedestrians with your vehicle.
When the warning flashers are blinking in a school zone, you are required by law to stop and yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or at an intersection with or without a marked crosswalk. Always follow the directions of school patrol signs, school patrol officers or designated crossing guards. It is against state law to pass a school bus while the red flashing lights are activated, whether it is loading or unloading passengers. If a roadway is divided, the lanes on the other side, moving in the opposite direction of the bus, may proceed with caution. However, traffic traveling in the same direction behind the school bus MUST stop. Never pass a stopped school bus on the right, whether loading or unloading. It is illegal and could have tragic consequences.
Pedestrian and vehicular traffic is extremely high around schools and children are the least predictable of pedestrians. They can be difficult to see and at times, may dart in front of a car without warning. Take extra care to look out for children, not only in school zones, but wherever you may be driving.
School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists of their intent to stop and either load or unload children. This is an indicator for you to begin stopping as well. Motorists that speed up in an effort to pass the bus before it’s lights change to flashing red, create an extremely dangerous situation.
Remember, vehicles stopped for a red light should not block crosswalks. Blocking a crosswalk forces pedestrians to walk around your vehicle and puts them in a potentially dangerous situation. Again, this becomes especially risky for children who may or may not be paying attention to traffic.
The area immediately around a stopped school bus is one of particular concern for a child’s safety. Be aware of this. As previously stated, children are unpredictable. They are usually very comfortable with their surroundings when walking to and from the bus and often will not be watching for vehicles. They are more likely to take risks, ignore hazards or

Lastly, remember that texting or talking on a handheld cell phone while driving is not only dangerous, but it is illegal within a school zone. Please put cell phones away and watch for other drivers, pedestrians and our children. No conversation, or amount of time saved by aggressive driving, is worth the safety of a child.

We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.

KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES
November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. For more information, contact Tammy Stringer at tammyrstringer@katyisd.org or 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING
KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family: • Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. • KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. • Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. • Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers.
Morton Review
KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. All mentors must make a one school year commitment to a student and complete an application and background check. For more information, contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows:
Saturday October 24, 2015 9am - 4pm

Fundraisers
2015 October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

NOVENA TO ST. JUDE
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say Novena 9 times a day for 9 days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you St. Jude – ML, AS, AS
Cajun Chicken and Sausage Gumbo
You could make this on National Gumbo Day October 12 !
DIRECTIONS: Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When hot, whisk in flour. Continue whisking until the roux has cooked to the color of chocolate milk, 8 to 10 minutes. Be careful not to burn the roux. If you see black specks in the mixture, start over. Stir onion, bell pepper, celery and sausage into the roux; cook 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook another 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning; blend thoroughly. Pour in the chicken broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chicken and simmer 1 hour more. Skim off any foam that floats to the top during the last hour. http://allrecipes.com/ Submitted by Yoyo78 DISCLAIMER: Articles and ads in this newsletter express the opinions of their authors and do not necessarily reflect to opinions of Krenek Printing Co. or its employees.
