NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Speed Limit Issues: The Harris County Commissioners Court approved Nottingham Country’s petition to lower the speed limit from 30 MPH to 25 MPH. By the time you are reading this newsletter, you will be seeing new speed limit signs posted in our community. Keep in mind that the speed limit on Kingsland and Fry Rd. will NOT change as they are major thoroughfares. Also, the speed limit in Section 10 of NC will remain at 30 MPH. Brondesbury is the one street that is in both Section 10 and Section 9. Therefore residents need to be mindful of that fact. Slow down when entering Section 9!! Law enforcement personnel will begin enforcing the speed limit as soon as the signs are posted. So advise all drivers in your family of the change. Let’s all do our part and slow down! There are only a few seconds difference between the two speed limits when driving a few blocks so it should not be a major inconvenience for anyone and it may save the life of a child or pet. Sidewalk Issues: Most of you probably aware that a commercial MUD to the east of Fry Rd. offered to pay the majority of the cost of installing sidewalks on the west side of Rennie between Silsbury and Kingsland and also between Kingsland and Dominion on the south side of Kingsland. This would be done to provide additional safety for children attending NCE. This offer was tabled after NCCIA and MCUD agreed that more information was needed and the 38 potentially affected homeowners were heard from regarding sidewalk installation on their property. Presently we have asked Harris County to review the situation at Nottingham Country Elementary School regarding additional No Parking signs. We have also asked KISD for a meeting to discuss increased bussing for NCE. At the time this article is being written, we have not received a reply from KISD. We will provide updated information as it occurs. We are all aware that there are safety issues at NCE during the hour of morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Parents picking up their children, sad to say, are really the major issue. We have cars being double parked, cars parking in violation of No Parking signs, cars parked the wrong way on the street, cars parked in the Kingsland alleyway and cars lined up on Kingsland trying to get into the NCE driveway. We know parking at NCE is a major issue: Not enough of it but little that can be done to add more. The Baptist Church parking lot across the street is an excellent place to park and await your child. There is a crossing guard at the intersection and it is much safer than the alternatives.

Street & Curb Issues: A thank you to the folks at Harris County for getting many of our curbs repaired along with some much needed street repair. There will always be repair issues but they responded within a few months of our request.

Geyer roofinG Specializing in Re-Roofing

Many homeowners need to take steps to repair their driveways and the curbs adjacent to them which are not the responsibility of the County. Some are looking very bad and time alone will not make them look better. It’s expensive but that is a normal part of homeownership and maintenance. School Board Election: There will be a KISD Board election in May. Please get out and vote!

FORECLOSURES IN NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY The following is the current inventory of foreclosed homes in NC as of 1/21/16: ADDRESS OWNER 1514 Hannington Foreclosure pending (Nationwide Mortgage) 20303 Lake Sherwood Foreclosure should take place within 30 days Ocwen Financial) We are seeing a few more homes in NC being posted for the monthly foreclosure sale. This is true through Harris County and a fact of life with the downturn in the area economy. The good news is that home values have increased in recent years so most homeowners should have some equity in their homes, which would enable them to sell their homes during times of financial problems as opposed to resorting to foreclosures. We are also seeing a number of For Rental signs without any action. It is likely we will see the rental market soften in NC in the coming months with area job layoffs. The current price range of our homes no longer equates to an active rental market. Frankly that is normally a good thing. NCCIA Board of Directors

NCCIA and MCUD will once again sponsor a neighborhood heavy trash pickup day on Saturday, April 9th between the hours of 8 AM and 2 PM. The location will be behind Nottingham Country Elementary School at the intersections of Rennie & Kingsland.

4

Personnel will be on site to assist with the unloading of materials. They will take most every type of household trash with the exception of tires, paint, oil and other hazardous household chemicals. This is a perfect time to clean out the garage, house, backyard and driveway and have it hauled off for free. The next heavy trash day will most likely be in the fall of 2016.

It’s worth repeating: If there’s something you can’t find that should be there, please send an email to: Webmaster@NottinghamCountry.org. If possible, we’ll include that information or make it easier to find. Your input is very valuable to our community.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

LOCAL JAM SESSIONS

If you like to play a musical instrument and/or sing with other musicians, we encourage you to join us on Friday nights, except the first Friday of the month, from 6 to 8 PM at a local Katy location. (No charge and non-profit.) We play on acoustic instruments, such as: guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin and bass fiddle. For more information, call 281-693-0391. No smoking or drinking.

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side.

This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

www.dependablecomfort.com everyone that diversity is interesting and beautiful! Everyone is encouraged to wear their dancing shoes (sneakers count) and participate in our Carnival Dance Contest. Prizes for 1st and 2nd place will be awarded!

NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY ELEMENTARY CARNIVAL The 2016 Nottingham Country Elementary (NCE) Carnival is coming on April 8th, from 5 PM-8:30 PM. Everyone is invited, free of charge, to “travel around the world in a day!” The event will celebrate diversity, which is NCE’s theme for the 2015-2016 school year and will be sprinkled with aerospace references, because no one can appreciate the unity of humanity better than an astronaut! Carnival is one of two annual fundraisers for NCE and typically attracts thousands of Katy residents and their families. It will take place at the NCE campus, 20500 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, Texas. Entertainment will include many games and rides, including the return of the Gmax (by popular demand) and the introduction of The Big Baller, a giant obstacle course featuring four huge, red, inflatable balls surrounded by a blue ball pit resembling a moat filled with water. In the food and beverage department, NCE will be offering a sampling of culinary delights from around the world! Chick-Fil-A also returns this year, along with the Chick-Fil-A cow. Pizza and Tutti Frutti for dessert also will be available. Young attendees will enjoy the Petting Zoo and Trackless Train and every guest can replenish their supplies of gear at the Carnival General Store. Kids of all ages can capture photos with their friends in the Photo Booth. Kids are invited to wear multi-cultural attire to the Carnival - as a reminder to Nottingham Country

Don’t forget the Silent Auction, bound to tantalize with themed baskets from each NCE class, as well as parties and the ever-popular 5th grade basketball game. Previous auctions have included a weekend getaway in a Galveston condo! Stay tuned to NCE’s Facebook page for details on this year’s auction items! Volunteers from Taylor High School will be lending a helping hand to this year’s event and many local businesses have shown their support of NCE by sponsoring this year’s Carnival. All sponsorship dollars are applied toward purchases to improve the school. This year’s Carnival will be absolutely out of this world. We’ll see you…out there!

FREE REPAIR ESTIMATES No Service Charge With this coupon. expires May 31st 2016 Limit one coupon

Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness. Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media announcements and through other means as appropriate. Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift card. See Official Contest Rules for more information. Everything you’ll need to participate including fact sheets, official rules and the contest entry form and agreement is posted at DontMessWithTexas.org. You can also download a flyer to display at your school to generate interest. The contest is through April 8, 2016. All entries must be submitted or postmarked on or before April 8, 2016. Winners will be announced in early May. Contact Keep Texas Beautiful at 1-800-Clean-Up or info@ ktb.org for any questions regarding the contest.

LOST YOUR PET? Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
