NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS All NC residents should be cautious when walking, fishing or wading in Mason Creek. Folks, there have been numerous sightings of alligators in there not to mention poisonous snakes! Not a good place to allow your pets to swim or much less your children to play in that area. We do not want a tragedy occurring there, so let this serve as a warning to be very careful along the creek. I have also noticed a number of hawks circling the area the past month or so. Hawks will swoop down and carry off small dogs and cats. Keep your pets inside or attended to when outside. We still see a few homeowners that have not removed dead trees. It’s long past due for getting that done. If you still have them, expect a letter from our attorney advising you to take them down or face legal action! It costs a few hundred dollars to take down a tree. Attorney fees run a few thousand dollars. Your choice! The board is seeking bids to build another gazebo or shelter in Rennie Park. Right now, we have one there and it is getting a great deal of usage. We believe another covered shelter would be a nice addition to the park. If any homeowner has suggestions as to how we might improve the park, we would love to hear from you. A few years ago we had problems with vandalism, graffiti and litter. We seem to be experiencing much less of that and I believe it’s to the credit of the residents who are using the park. Good users keep the “bad apples out, I guess. Thanks all for taking care of our park! We also own the vacant lot at Rennie and Silbury next to the telephone building. If someone has a suggestion as to how we might utilize that lot, we would appreciate your input. It’s not practical to put lights up in that areas as there are homes fronting on Rennie and Silbury. We also have to consider the threat of vandalism with regard to anything we might place there. Give us your thoughts!! You will find in this publication an article written by bruce Hamelin concerning our trash and recycling services. Please read it carefully as there seems to be some confusion about what is recyclable and placing trash cans at the curb. You are paying for backdoor pickup in all sections so there is NO need for the most part to place your trash cans at the curb. besides it looks bad!! At the time this article is being written, there remain about 50 homeowners in NC who still have not yet paid their 2012 homeownership assessment. Letters have been sent. A late fee has been added along with a $35 registered letter fee. For most, the balance is now about $255. If you fall into that category you will be getting one more Last Chance Letter. If this does not motivate you to pay up, a lien will be filed against your property and we will proceed with legal action. Much better to pay the $255 you owe rather than over $2,000 when legal fees are added. If you need some time, please call our management company to work out a payment plan. For those of you who wonder about this, yes, it’s pretty much the same homeowners year after year who put themselves in this position. Hopefully everyone is having a great summer. The occasional rain has been very nice. Don Mach.......NCCIA President and Legal Liaison

We have seen an increase of late. Many of the new ones have been long time past due with NCCIA and obviously their mortgage holders. Right now mortgage companies are behind in the foreclosure process, so we may continue to see an increase for a few months. The good news is that these typically are selling very quickly.

Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure.

Take OuT The PaPers and The Trash, Or YOu dOn’T GeT nO sPendinG Cash…

World-Class Care. Hometown Heart.

Hello, Neighbors! This article is a reminder and review of Nottingham Country’s Residential Standards for Trash and Refuse and Best Trash’s Rules and Recycling information. If more homeowners are aware of these facts and abide by them, the neighborhood will have more “curb appeal” and be pro-active ecologically. WHEN: Tuesday and Friday - Trash pick-up in all sections WHERE: Sec. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 7 - Tuesday Recycling Sec. 8 & 9 - Friday Recycling HOW: For sections without alleyway service, household garbage will be collected at the garage door area including up to 3 bags of grass not heavier than 40 pounds per bag. Tree, shrub, brush trimmings and fencing must be bundled and tied in lengths no greater than four feet with no branch diameter exceeding 4 inches. The bundling is required to allow quick pickup and size limitations are required to avoid damaging the equipment in the crushing process. These must be placed at the curb in the sections without alleyway service. The alleyway service needs to place it as close as practical to the alley. Bulky items must be located at the curb in the sections without alleyway service. Items such as appliances, furniture, carpet (up to 1 room, rolled and tied up in four feet sections and no heavier than 40 pounds) will be picked up either day. Best Trash will not collect dirt, bricks, rocks, concrete, tires, batteries, motor oil, cooking oil, waste generated by a private contractor or any items deemed hazardous materials. WHAT: Best Trash will recycle the following items: PAPER: DRY & CLEAN, LOOSE Newspaper & inserts Magazines & Catalogs Junk mail, envelopes, file folders Office white, colored and computer paper Corrugated cardboard boxes Cereal & gift boxes, etc. (that tear brown or grey) Paper bags & phone books Wrapping paper Milk cartons Juice cartons Wax coated boxes

CONTAINERS: EMPTY & CLEAN, LOOSE Glass - clear and colored Aluminum cans and foil Aluminum foil plates/serving containers Plastic bottles, jars, tubs and buckets (such as soda, water, milk, juice, liquor, detergent, condiments, salad dressing, yogurt, shampoos/conditioner bottles, margarine, pet food, etc.) Plastic grocery bags Styrofoam containers/packaging Metal food cans and lids (tin & steel) Metal pots and pans

The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext., 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). On June 3, 2012, Thomas Knight (BSA Troop 230), Kyle Rumsey (BSA Troop 1288) and Daniel Schwin (BSA Troop 230) celebrated their achievement of the Eagle Scout Award. The Eagle Scout Award is Scouting’s highest and most distinguished award. Approximately 4% of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. In order to earn Eagle Scout, each of the three boys completed a leadershiporiented, non-profit community service project. Thomas’s project involved installing a perimeter fence for Bonnie Holland Elementary’s school garden. Kyle designed and organized a landscaping restoration project for Woodsland Community REC Center in Old Katy and Daniel’s project included construction of planter boxes and outdoor patio furniture for the Willow Fork Volunteer Fire Department. As recipients of this prestigious rank, each has assumed a duty to serve God, country and his fellow man. All three scouts are graduates of Katy ISD - Class of 2012. In the fall, Thomas will attend Missouri University of Science & Technology, Kyle will attend Texas A&M University and Daniel will attend Purdue University.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FOR 2012 - 2013 The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a change in the eligibility requirements for students to receive transportation services. Starting in August 2012, the eligibility for bus transportation will change from the current 3/10 of a mile to approximately 1/2 mile for elementary students and approximately one mile for junior high and high school students. Bus transportation will continue to be provided for students for whom a hazardous condition may exist between home and school, as well as special needs bus routes. Approximately 52 bus routes (elementary and secondary) will be eliminated, affecting approximately 6,600 students or nearly 21% of the 32,000 students that ride school buses daily. The Katy ISD Transportation Department began building bus routes in June and will have specific routing information available for parents sometime in August. The district will announce specific dates once they become available. The changes are the result of the Transportation Department experiencing particular challenges this year in having a sufficient number of drivers available to meet daily transportation route requirements. Due to vacant routes and driver absences, there have been days in which the department has found it necessary to find drivers to cover up to 46 routes. These changes will allow the district to better meet route driver needs and will provide for more effective route management, including driver training and driver support in issues involving student management.

Insured “The change in transportation services comes after extensive review of our current transportation operations that not only revealed a heavy burden for drivers covering multiple routes, but also a high amount of uncertainty and risk due to vacant routes and driver absences,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “In comparison to other school districts, Katy ISD’s transportation eligibility distances remain among the shortest in the Houston area as many districts require students to live outside of a two mile radius.”

The first recorded junior bowling competition between teams was a four-team boy’s league at a technical school in Chicago in 1937. It didn’t take long before other schools soon joined in and within a short period of time, the Chicago High School Bowling Club was formed. Soon after, the American High School Bowling Congress was organized and became a nationwide competition for young bowlers. Thus, this is how high school bowling began 75 years ago. In Texas, high school bowling began as a club sport in 2001 with the formation of the Texas High School Bowling Club Program. In its inaugural year, there were only 5 districts, 25 schools and 13

centers that participated in the program. Today, those numbers have grown to include 75 districts, 177 schools and 53 centers across the state. However, despite the rapid growth of high school bowling in Texas, it has never been adopted by the Texas U.I.L. to be recognized as a high school sport. On June 12th two Houston area high school bowlers, Keith Gardner (Katy ISD) and Dominick Savage (Ft. Bend ISD), traveled to Austin to appear before the Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee at their Annual Policy Meeting to make a proposal that bowling be added as an U.I.L. athletic sport in high schools across the state. They prepared a presentation and were given only five minutes to speak to the committee members, which was comprised of district Superintendents from throughout Texas. Having only a limited amount of time to present their topic, Keith and Dominick focused on some of the highlights about high school bowling. At the end of their presentation, members of the Legislative Committee commended Keith and Dominick on making such a great presentation and asked several questions, such as how many students are on each of their bowling teams; which areas currently have the most concentration of high school bowlers; how much are they currently paying for a participation fee and what are there averages, to name just a few. Each committee member was provided with a copy of Keith and Dominick’s presentation along with a brochure from USBC, which discusses a little more about High School bowling. Karen Miller, the Executive Director of the Texas Bowling Centers Association, had also filed a proposal with the Texas U.I.L. to add bowling as a new U.I.L. sport and was also in attendance at the meeting as a representative of the Texas High School Bowling Club. She provided additional information to the Committee in response to some of the questions that were being asked of the youth bowlers.

The Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee will reconvene in October and will vote at that time whether or not to pass bowling as a new U.I.L. sport. Let’s hope this will be the year. It’s been 75 years and it’s about time bowling gets state athletic association recognition in Texas.

KISD TRAINERS AWARDED SPORTS MEDICINE SCHOLARSHIPS Three local student athletic trainers were recently awarded Sports Medicine scholarships from Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Jarrell Beckett, Morton Ranch High School; Catherine Long, Cinco Ranch High School and Victoria Costilla, Katy High School. Each of these recent graduates received $1,000 in recognition of the distinguished service they provided to Katy ISD athletic programs throughout their high school years. Beckett will attend Prairie View A&M University, Long will start her studies at Valparaiso University in Indiana and Costilla will attend Texas Tech University.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012 In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/ tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.
