NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS
The state of NCCIA at this point of time is good. The subdivision, of course, continues to age and there are a number of homes, particularly in Sections One and Two that need some work. We have been experiencing about two foreclosures per month and the homes seem to sell very quickly with the new owners putting in necessary funds to revitalize the homes. This is a good thing. The number of homeowner’s delinquent on assessments has never been lower during the past eight years. Of course, some homes going into foreclosure has had a bearing on that matter. If a homeowner cannot pay $200 per year it’s doubtful they can afford a mortgage. Rennie Park continues to have good usage and we have really not had any problems to speak of this year. Perhaps next year we will look to put in another shelter if the funds are available. On the subject of funds, you will be hearing more about that next year, as we continue to reduce our reserves with our expenses climbing each year. Our crime statistics are very good in my opinion. Our Constables are doing a good job and homeowners are continuing to be observant and call them to check on suspicious activity. Having one particular home foreclosed upon earlier this year has helped that matter, as the property was a haven for bad behavior and residents. Deed restriction issues continues to be and always will be, an issue with our homes getting older. Once again, we ask homeowners to try to speak to their neighbors whose homes detract from the rest of those on the block. In the meantime, we will continue to stay on them for violations of our DR’s. By the way, NC has back door trash pickup. There is no need to take your bags of trash and put them on the curb. The only items that should be on the curb are bundled tree limbs, bagged grass clippings and very heavy objects. DO NOT place your other trash bags on the curb as animals break into them and the contents get spread on the streets. Besides that, its looks bad! The alleyways continue to be a challenge with continued deterioration as they are about 40 years old. Cost of repairs has gone up considerably. Again, this is a subject you will be hearing more about in the future. We, once again, ask for homeowners to volunteer for projects. For example, it’s been years since NC really did anything on National Night Out. It would be nice if we would promote this but eight volunteer board members, four of which have full-time jobs, cannot do it all. Many years ago we had Block Captains that would assist with this type of thing. Perhaps someone could step up to assist in putting something like that back in place. May everyone have a wonderful holiday season. Drive carefully, watch for suspicious activity in the neighborhood, as this time of year brings forth increases in break-ins and do something kind for those less fortunate. Don Mach.....NCCIA President and Legal Liaison

We have seen an increase of late. Many of the new ones have been delinquent with NCCIA for many years and obviously their mortgage holders. Right now mortgage companies are behind in the foreclosure process, so we may continue to see an increase for a few months. The good news is that these typically are selling very quickly with most of the new owners doing a lot of good repairs to the properties and thus enhancing values throughout the neighborhood. Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure. Road Work in Nottingham Country I’m sure it’s evident to most residents that road work has been ongoing In Nottingham Country for the last month or two. The County has worked with our local MUD, Mason Creek Utility District, to identify major road problems and repair as many as possible. We understand the County has identified some 66 areas needing repair and is still working through the list. As part of the process, NCCIA prepared a list of streets needing repair and this was one of the documents the County used to identify priority areas needing work. We will check the list supplied against the actual repairs once the County is complete to see what remains and we have met with several homeowners who will continue to keep our list current and will contact the County after the repairs are finished. We realize street maintenance can cause some traffic flows issues but the repairs have been long needed. Bob Wills, NCCIA Director

How to address the Board directly
The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry. org). Katy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent a recent Saturday helping to feed the hungry at the Houston Food Bank. This is the second year the local church members have set aside a day to do some good in the community. In October 2011, Katy Latter-day Saints joined with other Mormons worldwide in local community service projects, ranging from tying quilts to cleaning a cemetery. Community service tends to feel good, so Mormons in Katy decided to set up a special day each fall for serving in the community together. This year’s project, on Saturday, October 13th, was packing meal boxes at the Houston Food Bank. About 220 Katy church members drove to the Houston Food Bank facility. In just a few hours they sorted and packed 28,503 meals for adults, plus another 6,240 pounds of rice and beans, which were repackaged to be used for 8,543 meals for youth. It was a good day’s work of feeding the hungry.

First Annual Chris Saiz Charity Golf Tournament Deemed a Huge Success Thanks to Community Support If the success of the First Annual Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, held recently at the River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy, is any indication of the community support of the young foundation, it is off to a great start. With over $50,000 raised, the mission of awarding scholarships to local students with dreams of continuing their education after graduating from high school, but are in need of some financial assistance, can be accomplished. Last May, shortly after the foundation was formed, in honor of Chris Saiz, a much-loved Cinco Ranch High School junior, who passed away as a result of a tragic car accident, three local area students received Magda and Michael Saiz scholarship funds to assist with their college expenses. Saiz was a star basketball player and high achieving student who had dreams of playing basketball in college and achieving his academic goals. In addition to the 150 golfers that attended the event, several Katyarea businesses stepped up to contribute to the tournament. Which Wich provided a delicious box lunch, Mission Burrito was on hand with snacks, Orange Leaf Yogurt donated refreshing frozen yogurt and Stadia Sports Grill served a sit down meal for the golfers to enjoy during the evening program. Golfers and guests were also wined and dined compliments of Ferdie Dupuis of Frank’s International and refreshments sponsored by Global Data Systems and Ooh La La Dessert Boutique.

on a B17 and was shot down in January of 1945. He remained a POW until liberated by the Russian forces at the end of the war. Bud went to his eternal resting place in 2011 and will never be forgotten. Bart Robinson, World War II veteran, Pacific Theater, was captured on the Island of Java in April of 1942 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW of the Japanese. Bart was held as a POW for 3 ½ years, while at the same time his brother was also being held as a POW. Ray Essig, World War II, 42nd Rainbow Division, was an infantryman with the Rainbow Division, also captured in January 1945 and was held as a POW for the balance of the war on the Russian front. At the end, he was released by the Germans. He was released on foot and walked to the American lines, the best he could, in advance of the oncoming Russian Army. Ray Essig has documented his POW experience, “Observations of a Pawn, World War II.” A copy is kept in the library of the Veterans Memorial Museum in Katy, Texas. Ray Essig returned home, married and raised a family. Ray Essig’s sacrifices are also documented in the World War II combat history publication, “The Story of the Rainbow” which is dedicated to the soldiers of the 42nd Rainbow Division. Richard Russell, Vietnam War, remains missing in action. He was a navigator on a C 130 aircraft that was shot down north of Saigon in An Loc province in 1972. Six were on the plane and only four have been accounted for. Within the last two months, Marianne Russell, the spouse of Richard Russell, received word that the U.S. government has suspended its search efforts at the known crash site for her husband. Marianne joined the VFW members for its annual POW/MIA and emotionally shared how important it is to “let people know there’s still families waiting and when you have someone affected it means more.” We need to bring the soldiers home to bury on American soil. Marianne and their four year old daughter were living in Taiwan when Richard Russell’s plane was shot down. She wanted to stay in Taiwan for news, but the government ordered her to leave the next day.

David Walker became one of 63 hostages held at the American Embassy, Tehran, Iran during President Carter’s administration. He was released January 1980 and assigned to the 2nd Battalion Marines in Okinawa. After many assignments in Hawaii and Oklahoma, he was deployed to Desert Storm and retired in 1994. In 2001, David Walker’s status was changed from “hostage status” to POW status by the U.S. government. David Walker experiences are difficult for words. Imagine being blindfolded, put in front of a firing squad, hearing the click of the weapon and constantly having someone standing over you with automatic weapons day after day. Imagine a P38 being held to your head because the Iranians wanted information, for instance, combinations to the safe upstairs at the U.S. Embassy. Soldiers are trained to only provide their name and rank. During his time in Iran, Walker would rarely leave the Embassy and when they did a translator would accompany them. David Walker, the son of a minister, became a deacon and he continues to find salvation the more he studies God’s word.

LOCAL TEACHERS ATTEND TSCA CONVENTION
San Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon. Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership.

"Doing business from the same location since 1978"
Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.
CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70 TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.” Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM). For more information about the concert, contact Ben Rolens, general manager of facilities at the Leonard E. Merrell Center, at 281-396-2562. Go to www.merrellcenter.org to get your tickets online.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, Through December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
