NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Housing market update: I have lived in NC for more than 25 years and I have never seen so many homes undergoing renovations both inside and out. Most of our homes are 40+ years in age, so it stands to reason that updates are in order. I have heard many residents expressing concerns about the number of homes listed for sale in NC. The worst time I remember for home sales was in the mid-’80s, but I would have to agree that the number is pretty high right now. One reason might be that Exxon employees are moving to the Woodlands instead of staying and enduring a horrid commute. Another factor is that we have investors who have been renting out homes who now want to get the cash out of their investment. If the home is in excellent shape and has been updated both inside and outside, it will sell quickly (assuming the price is reasonable). Granted, values have probably decreased a bit due to the oil crunch the Houston area is experiencing, but our values are still much greater than they were a few years ago. Ticky-tacky trash: We continue to have issues with trash. Since we have received so many complaints about trash, we are providing this very friendly reminder about our trash rules. The main rule is that your trash should not be put out at the curb until the morning of pickup. In general, we are seeing way too many mattresses, furniture, old grills and whatnot being placed at the curb two and three days before pickup. This looks horrible, so please let’s stop doing this. That said, we understand that sometimes people have to put it out the night before. And we also know that there are several folks who peruse our neighborhood prior to trash day to pick up items they can resell and that’s actually a pretty good system for both sides. But these guys are not going to pick up a whole yard’s worth of items. In addition, you should know that our vendor, Best Waste Management, will pick up extra trash if you’re just a little over the limit. If you have a ton of debris, please either call our vendor or a private trash hauling company for an estimate.

We are seeing lots of boxes with recycling materials at the curb and we are pleased as punch to see so much recycling. However, please call the MUD and have them deliver a nice container to your home. This way, you can just roll it to the curb and not have to carry all those boxes (and your back will thank you too). I believe the cost is $20, but it’s well worth it to not having to haul all that stuff by hand.

Holiday mindfulness: The holidays are upon us and while it is a wonderful time of year for most of us, it can be a trying time for those in need. Please consider helping those who are less fortunate. Also, as you’re out and about, please be mindful. People with bad intent know that folks are harried and often capitalize on those situations. Please be careful. Lock your home and car doors. Pay attention to who is around you. Watch for suspicious people in the area and around the malls.

NCE traffic issues: NCCIA Board members Scott Murphy and Kathryn O’Brien are working with Harris County and KISD to alleviate some of the traffic and parking issues on Kingsland and Rennie near NC Elementary School. We are seeing many parents parking on Kingsland and Rennie in efforts to drop off and pick up children at NCE. This is becoming a dangerous situation. There are No Parking signs on Rennie, but parents are ignoring them. We are going to ask the County to study the situation and make recommendations. Also, the constables will be issuing tickets to those parking illegally.

Everyone realizes that parking is an issue at NCE. The school was built in the ’70s and it does not resemble the large KISD campuses that are now being built. The school is land locked, so there is not much that can be done. Fortunately, Kingsland Baptist Church, which is across the street from the school, has allowed parents to use its parking lot. That is a good option for parents for drop off and pick-up, because there is a light at the intersection at the corner of the church parking lot and it is manned by crossing guards.

But I understand that getting to that parking lot can be difficult as well. The bottom line is that we have a safety issue here and it needs to be corrected. If you are a parent with children in NCE, please do not park where there are No Parking signs.

FORECLOSURES IN NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY The following is the current inventory of foreclosed homes in NC as of 10/24/15: OWNER Foreclosure pending (Nationwide Mortgage) Foreclosure ultimately pending (Ocwen Financial) 1006 Chippenham Wells Fargo (home is currently listed for sale) There has only been two foreclosures in NC in 2015 and both were sold and renovated. Both homes now look fantastic with great homeowners in each one. Very few foreclosures are taking place in Harris County and we have not seen a foreclosure posting in NC for many months. There are a few vacant homes in NC but most of them are for sale or they have been vacant for years and for some unknown reasons the owners have continued to maintain them but not try to sell them or lease them out. Here is a list of the burglary to motor vehicles we had.

9-1: 1400 Rustic Knolls-The resident came home around midnight from buying groceries. Left the car unlocked and went inside to eat before he brought stuff in. Unknown person rummaged through car. Did not take anything. 9-3: 700 Rennie-The vehicle was broken into at the CrossPoint Church located at 700 Westgreen. 9-12: 20500 Manette-Resident left vehicle unlocked. Nothing taken car was rummaged through. 9-29: 20500 Hampshire Rocks-Resident left his car unlocked, had his wallet and backpack stolen. 9-29: 1400 Rustic Knolls-This actually occurred on the 9-24. Laptop stolen out of unlocked car. Thefts:

9-11: 1400 Hoveden-resident had her son’s friend that hangs around all the time steal her debit card. 9-19: 700 Enford-lawn crew had their lawn mower stolen by another lawn crew 9-24: 611 Brenwick-new resident hired a contractor to renovate. He paid the contractor $6500. Up front. The contractor never returned and also took the homeowner’s tools. 9-29: 1400 Crossfield-homeowner had someone come in his back yard and steal his wind chimes and a ladder. He believes it’s his lawn guy’s brother (that sometimes works with him). Our holidays are approaching fast. SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION INFORMATION For about the past three months a group of dedicated NC residents have diligently organized an effort to poll the community in support of a proposal to lower our current 30 MPH speed limit to 25 MPH. Harris County conducted a traffic study and indicated NC is eligible for a lower speed limit with the exception of S. Fry Rd. and Kingsland Blvd., which have to remain at 30 MPH. The group believes a lower speed limit will benefit the community due to our not having sidewalks for children commuting to and from schools, residents walking pets and the fact we have more and more traffic in our area. The number of NC residents showing support of the lower speed limit is now over 700 of the required 1,200 needed to have the limit lowered. (This is as of October 17th.) Remember this is a Harris County requirement and NCCIA has no control over the issue. December 2015

After doing the above you can contact the Lower Speed limit group at nottinghamcountry25@yahoo.com or call 254-5926369 and someone will come by and pick it up. You cannot email it, as the petition is only valid with original signatures. At the same time, if you wish to have the existing 30 MPH retained you do not have to do anything. However, you can send an email to the same site and ask that no one from this group come to your door. Communicating your request makes it easier for everyone. Every effort will be made to honor your wish. No one likes knocking on doors and no one likes people knocking on their doors! If you are so inclined to assist the lower speed limit group you can email them at that site. At this time we are not aware of any organized group opposing the lower limit, but if we are made aware of one we will extend the same courtesy to that group. Regardless of the final outcome of this effort, this issue has already proven itself as a great way to meet your neighbors and create a strong and bonded community. There has been a number of local television interviews and newsprint articles regarding this proposal and all have painted NC in a very Nottingham Country

positive light. Moving forward we hope this will establish Nottingham Country’s reputation as an area where residents care about other people and drive safely as we still continue to see way too many drivers speeding and running stop signs. NCCIA Board of Directors

Nottingham Country Elementary held the annual Boosterthon Fun Run on October 8, 2015. Boosterthon’s theme this year was Big World Recess. Students learned about fitness, leadership and character during the two week program, which included six character plays from real kid athletes on how to Win with Teamwork, Live with Curiosity, Score with Practice, Play with Humility, Ride with Confidence and Run with Endurance. All students in Kindergarten through 5th grade participated in the Fun Run and the average number of laps ran was 34. Students raised pledges from all 50 states, and earned the privilege of sliming two faculty members, Assistant Principal Becky Marron and Coach Rashad Lee, along with Boosterthon team member Tick Tock Taylor. To date, $30,000 has been collected from the fundraiser. Boosterthon Fun Run is organized by the NCE PTA and is held annually to raise funds for technology in the classroom and other PTA expenses. The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. • STORYTIME - Storytime for preschool-aged children is held each Wednesday at 10:15 AM. Stories, fingerplays and songs are featured. This is ideal for children ages 3 to 5, but all children and their caregivers are welcome. On Wednesdays, December 23rd and 30th, Pre-School time will be at 10:30 AM.• PAT-A-CAKE CLUB INFANT STORYTIME - This program will meet each Tuesday morning at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM. This is an interactive program for children, ages 0 to 12 months and their caregivers. Each session will last about 20 minutes, featuring nursery rhymes, songs and finger plays. There will be only one Infant Storytime on Tuesdays, December 22nd and 29th at 10:30 AM. • PRE SCHOOL EXPLORERS - Is your pre-schooler ready to explore the world? On Saturday, November 14th, the Houston non-profit literacy organization, READ3Zero, honored one Katy student at a memorable Luncheon and Book Signing event for this year’s winners of the “I Write” contest and celebrated the organization’s sixth year. The student is Sachi Khemka from Taylor High School. The Awards Ceremony offered individual recognition in the form of a certificate of excellence to each student author and illustrator followed by the Literacy Luncheon and Book Signing with Honorees, Neil and Maria Bush, co-chairs to the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, Luncheon co-chairs Michael Pearce and Matt Burrus, emceed by Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston. The luncheon was held at the Hilton Americas located at 1600 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010. Founded in 2009 by children’s author and public speaker, Melissa M. Williams, READ3Zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. One of the primary creative projects at READ3Zero is the annual short-story contest, which emphasizes the concept that reading and writing go hand in hand. The program provides leadership and speaking opportunities to the students after they are published. Children are also allowed to submit drawings for the front and back cover of the book. Organizations, businesses and community members are able to help fund the efforts of READ3Zero by contributing support for future
