NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS

Christmas is upon us and a new year is a few weeks away. Seems like the years just go by faster and faster! This time of year always brings out the best of us and the worst amongst us. If you are leaving town for the holidays, please make certain you call the Constables office and let them know and they will do a special watch on your home. There are those who prey on vacant homes. It’s also a good idea to let a neighbor know that you will be gone for a few days and how to reach you in the event they need to. I recall back in 1989, we had the temperatures drop to four degrees on Christmas Eve. Pipes that froze and broke begin to thaw out and we saw water running down the driveways all over the Houston area. That was a mess I hope to never see again. Doubtful it will happen this year, but always as good idea to let someone know when you are away.

GOOD CRITTERS BIG AND SMALL We have experienced fewer and fewer lost pets eblasts of late and that is good news. However, I recently received a number of complaints about dogs and cats roaming the streets without humans attached. I know no self-respecting cat would ever be seen with a human attached to their leash. So that means cats are best left inside the house. I know dogs accidently get loose, so please make certain all of your pets have collars with current information, so if lost, they can be returned to you. Harris County does have a leash law, so dogs should not be allowed to run freely. If your pet accidently bites or harms someone you can be held liable. We have coyotes,

alligators and lots of other bad stuff in the area, so please be a responsible pet owner and a good neighbor to all. Those of us who are animal lovers sometimes forget that we have neighbors that do not appreciate our pets “pooing” on their lawns!!

NOT SO GOOD CRITTERS We have been informed that Section 6 has an epidemic of opossums in the area. I suspect they probably come from the unkempt vacant property at the southeast corner of the I-10 service road and Westgreen. Not much we can do about that, but homeowners are encouraged to not allow pet food to remain outside. This just contributes to the critters coming into our area. They also like shelter so keep garage doors closed. Also, make sure trash cans are tightly covered. If you end up with them in your garage or attic you may have some real problems. They are rather cute but you do not want them living with you. So residents of Section 6, please do your part to keep them from multiplying and taking over all of NC!!

HOA ASSESSMENTS The annual homeowner’s association assessment fees were due the end of December. There is a grace period of 30 days until the end of January. If not paid by February 28, 2014, late fees will be applied. No sense paying late fees! If you are new to NC, mortgage companies do NOT pay annual homeowners fees. You are responsible for the payment. Please mail in the payments or you can go online to our website: www. nottinghamcountry.org and pay them online. There remain about 18 of you that have not yet paid your 2013 fees at the time of this article. You know who you are!! You have received legal letters and the next step will be a lawsuit, so avoid about $2,000 in legal fees and get this handled. May everyone have a joyous Christmas and happy Holiday Season! Be safe, watch your surroundings while shopping and share your blessings with those less fortunate. Don Mach...NCCIA President

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

Driving • Avoid driving alone or at night. • Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device. • If you must shop at night, park in a well-lit area. • Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked. • Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside. • Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.

• Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car. • Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. • When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. • Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area. • Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location. AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE (ATM) • Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you. • Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location. SHOPPING • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. • Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. • Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. CHILDREN • If possible, leave small children at home with a trusted babysitter. • Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you. • Teach children to stay close to you at all times while shopping. • Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom. • Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car. • Teach children their full name, address and telephone number to give to police officers or mall security. Teach children to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them. AT HOME • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. • Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. • Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. STRANGERS AT YOUR DOOR • Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. • It is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people during the holiday season by soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes, although no charity is involved.

We welcome all people interested in gardening and gardening-related areas from West Houston and the Katy area. You do not have to live in Nottingham Country to belong to our group! NCGC is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs and the National Federation of Garden Clubs. The purpose of the club is to promote beautification in the community, support local and national educational and charitable organizations and educate the community about our environment. Donations from the NCGC are funded by our annual Spring Plant Sale and projects that vary each year.

Nottingham Country Mom’s Group has almost 50 members interested in becoming involved in our group. HOW TO ADDRESS THE BOARD DIRECTLY The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

KATY ISD’S 16TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ

Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 375 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 16th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promise to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during two weeks in November. This year, 10 Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Cimarron, Creech, Franz, Golbow, Exley, Rhoads, Rylander, Williams, Wilson and Winborn Elementary Schools. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, BP America, Inc., CenterPoint Energy, Chick-fil-A of Katy, College Nannies and Tutors of Katy, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Katy Family YMCA, Members Choice Credit Union, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank, Wood Group and more. Promise to Read is one of several community involvement programs offered by Katy ISD Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. Girl Scout Ambassador Christin Vogel recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl scout can achieve. Less than five percent of girls who join Girl Scouts earn this recognition. Thousands of squirrels and swamp rabbits are injured yearly due to natural causes such as storms and diseases, as well as animal attacks and human interaction. Christin’s project addressed the issue of providing shelter for squirrels and swamp rabbits while they recover from injuries. Christin and her volunteers built squirrel boxes and swamp rabbit boxes to donate to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center rehabilitates wounded animals with the intent to release back into the wild. The shelters that were built will be placed in their natural habitats and the squirrels and swamp rabbits will use these temporary shelters until they are once again fully adapted to the wild and can live efficiently on their own. Christin also conducted educational workshops at local libraries and informed people about how the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center takes in harmed animals and helps them recover strength, confidence and their natural habits. She also described signs of an injured animal and discussed what to do if an animal does become injured and how to avoid harming wild animals. Christin demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, community involvement, time management and personal development in order to carry out her Gold Award project. As an active member of Girl Scouts for 9 years, Christin has also earned her Bronze and Silver Awards. Christin is currently a Junior at Cinco Ranch High School.

through the badges they have earned over the years. The scouts have been in various leadership roles from historian to Senior Patrol Leader. Several of the scouts have attended the National Youth Leadership Training to assist them in their leadership roles. In addition to the various merit badges and countless service hours, the scouts had to choose their own project to manage that would benefit the community. Aaron’s project was to build a workbench for permanent display at the Katy Heritage Society. Ashton’s project was to put in a flagpole for the American Flag at Aristioli Classic Academy in Katy. Colby’s project was to build classroom book/storage shelves for Cinco Ranch High School German Department. Cory’s project was to build storage/travel boxes for tympani set for Katy High School Band. Tony’s project was to build donation boxes that collected funds for the needy for Epiphany’s Outreach Ministry. John’s project was to collect new and gently used children’s books for Texas Children’s Hospital. Aiden’s project was to build a wooden podium to be used by the religion ministry at the Vance Unit of TDCJ. All of these scouts are currently attending college (except Cory and Aiden, who are seniors in HS) and moving on to the next chapter in their lives. They would all tell you what an honor it is to achieve Eagle and are thankful to the help and support of their leaders.
