HAPPY NEW YEAR! NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS
Greetings All! It’s hard to believe that another year has passed. The NCCIA hopes everyone had a wonderful holiday season. As we start off this 2016 New Year, let’s hold onto that spirit of unity, harmony and peace that holiday traditions embrace and apply it to our community. Here are some important things to remember: Holiday Decorations - Let’s remember to pack up our holiday decorations in a timely manner. This keeps our yards uniform and the neighborhood uncluttered. Seasonal Yard Maintenance - This is still the time of year that trees are shedding their leaves. It’s important for residents to be diligent about bagging leaves to ensure storm and alleyway drains do not become clogged. Please
do not dump leaves or other debris into storm drains. This prevents potential street and home flooding. Please Pick Up After Your Pet - It doesn’t take much to remember that we have pets in our community. In fact, if you don’t watch your step, you’re liable to step in one such reminder! Besides being unsightly, animal waste can be hazardous to the health of our children and other pets. When walking your dog in our community, remember that it should be leashed. Also, it is important to remember to immediately clean up after your pet. Take along a baggie with you to pick up waste and then dispose of it properly. For those of you that walk in Rennie Park, the NCCIA has installed pet pickup bag stations along the gravel trail. Please don’t forget to use them when walking your pets. Sections 1, 2 & 3 - Our Precinct 5 Constables request that Nottingham Neighbors who live along alleyways place their house numbers visibly in the rear of the property. Having the numbers in the back assists constables as they patrol the neighborhood. School’s Open - Please Drive Carefully - Now that school is in session again, drivers to should remember to watch out for children near bus stops and schools. • Remember that the speed limit is 20 mph in a school zone. • Drive with your headlights on to be more visible. • Look for clues indicating that children might be in the area (for example, school safety patrols, adult crossing guards, bicycles, school buses or playgrounds).

• Watch for school buses flashing their lights, which means that students are entering or exiting the bus. • Texas Statutes - Section 545.302: STOPPING, STANDING or PARKING PROHIBITED IN CERTAIN PLACES (3) within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection; (4) within 30 feet on the approach to a flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign or traffic-control signal located at the side of a roadway. The Benefits of Recycling Add Up Educators have created interesting and innovative curriculum to teach today’s school-aged children about the importance of waste prevention and recycling. If you don’t have a kid handy to remind you about how important it is to conserve natural resources and extend the life of our existing landfills by participating in community recycling programs, then consider the following: • Using one ton of post-consumer paper to make new paper products saves approximately 7,000 gallons of water and conserves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. • Recycling 300 lbs. of paper saves roughly one tree. • For every ton of glass that is recycled we eliminate 384 lbs. of mining waste. • Using post-consumer aluminum cans to make new cans produces about 95% less air pollution as compared to the process of manufacturing aluminum cans from virgin materials. • Paper recycling reduces pollution by about 50% • Recycling a 36-in stack of newspaper saves about 73 kilowatt hours of electricity (about 14% of a typical residential electric utility bill). • Recycling a pound of aluminum saves enough energy to light a 100-watt built for 290 hours. • It takes 64% less energy to make paper products from postconsumer paper, saving the equivalent of three barrels of oil for each ton of paper that is recycled.

Think of it as a security alarm system that you probably already have and that does not require installation. Test it. It will go off from almost everywhere inside your house and it typically works if you park either in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off, obviously the bad guy won’t stick around. He will scram because he knows all your neighbors will be looking out their windows to see what is going on. This idea could be used in other situations as well, like when you are returning to your car in a large parking lot. If someone approaches you, you can set off your car alarm to attract attention. It’s also a great idea for other types of emergencies, like a heart attack where you would not be able to reach a phone. It could also be used as a signal system for older couples. If the husband has to go outside, he can carry his car keys with him. That way, if he falls and his wife can’t hear him, he can activate the car alarm and she will know there is a problem. Feel free to share this tip if you feel it will benefit anyone you know! NCCIA Board of Directors

CRIME PREVENTION TIP
One of our homeowners was kind enough to share the following tip that he picked up from a neighborhood watch coordinator. He says putting your car keys beside your bed at night is a great idea. That way, if you hear a noise outside your house or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound until you turn it off.
Our area’s Constable’s office has made available to any resident of Nottingham Country an engraving tool that can be very helpful. By engraving a number (TX driver’s license number) or an identifying name on all of your valuable items (TV, DVD, computers, etc.) they will much easier to identify if they are ever stolen. To make this even easier, a phone call to the office (281 492-3600) is all that is necessary to have one delivered to your home. Please take advantage of this great opportunity to protect your valuable assets. Horace Davies, NCCIA Security Director

FORECLOSURES IN NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY
The following is the current inventory of foreclosed homes in NC as of 10/24/15: ADDRESS 1514 Hannington 20303 Lake Sherwood 1006 Chippenham
OWNER Foreclosure pending (Nationwide Mortgage) Foreclosure ultimately pending (Ocwen Financial) Wells Fargo (home is currently listed for sale)
There has only been two foreclosures in NC in 2015 and both were sold and renovated. Both homes now look fantastic with great homeowners in each one. Very few foreclosures are taking place in Harris County and we have not seen a foreclosure posting in NC for many months. There are a few vacant homes in NC but most of them are for sale or they have been vacant for years and for some unknown reasons the owners have continued to maintain them but not try to sell them or lease them out. Have a fabulous month from The Nottingham Country Moms’ Group.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

JANUARY LAWN CARE Whether you’re new to Texas or have lived here all your life, you might be wondering how to keep your grass healthy throughout winter so you have a lush, green lawn come spring. If you need a few pointers, just follow these guidelines below and give your lawn the care it needs to thrive all year round! 1. Tailor your watering to the season. Since we rarely get snow in this part of Texas, our lawn still needs to be taken care of in winter. Keep in mind that grass needs about 1 to 2 inches of rain per week, including any rainfall. Be sure to water your lawn if it’s been a few weeks without rain, as it’s probably thirsty. In terms of when and how to water your lawn, early morning is best so it can dry throughout the day and stave off lawn diseases. 2. Try to stay off the lawn. It may be tempting to walk across your lawn as a shortcut, but use the designated walking paths if possible. Although grass is pretty resilient, it can still get worn down if it’s repeatedly trampled on. Likewise, try to keep your lawn clear of stray objects or children’s toys so it can breathe. And of course, if you park a car or truck on your lawn, your grass may not fare so well. 3. Use stray leaves to your advantage. Not only can a solid blanket of leaves suffocate your lawn, but they can provide warmth and shelter for a variety of lawn nuisances like rodents, fungi and insects. However, you don’t necessarily need to bag up all those leaves and take them to the curb. They can actually be a great source of nutrients for your grass if you turn them into a mulch. 21218 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450 JANUARY LAWN CARE Whether you’re new to Texas or have lived here all your life, you might be wondering how to keep your grass healthy throughout winter so you have a lush, green lawn come spring. GRATITUDE CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER, HEALTHIER Health experts, psychologists and different schools of philosophy and religion said that gratitude is essential to live longer and happier lives and several studies on the scientific side of thankfulness also prove it. Researchers of a study published in Personal Relationships journal found that gratitude was linked to improved marriage outcomes. After surveying more than 460 couples by phone, the results showed that the power of thank you can go a long way in helping significant others feel appreciated, that their partners are committed to the relationship and that the partnership will

last. Gratitude also helped protect a couple’s relationship from divorce and separation and that marital commitment is also protected from the negative consequences due to communication breakdown during conflicts. “Even if a couple is experiencing distress and difficulty in other areas, gratitude in the relationship can help promote positive marital outcomes,” said Allen Barton, a postdoctoral research associate at UGA’s Center for Family Research and the study’s lead author. Another recent research from the American Psychological Association published last April said that asymptomatic heart failure patients who kept a gratitude journal had markedly decreased levels of inflammation and improved cardiac health. More than 180 men and women participated in the study and had to keep a gratitude journal for at least eight weeks. Researchers found that those who committed to these journals had reduced circulation on inflammatory biomarkers of the disease as well as improved heart contractility and function. “It seems that a more grateful heart is indeed a more healthy heart and that gratitude journaling is an easy way to support cardiac health,” said Paul J. Mills, professor of family medicine and public health at the University of California. How does one practice gratitude even at times when it feels like there is nothing to be thankful for at all? One way to do this, some experts say, is in shifting the mindset to finding things to be grateful for, no matter how small it is. “It is relatively easy to be thankful for the most important and obvious parts of life - a happy marriage, healthy kids or living in America,” wrote Arthur Brooks, president of American Enterprise Institute and a writer for the New York Times. “But truly happy people find ways to give thanks for the little, insignificant trifles.” Courtesy of techtimes.com

Declutter and depersonalize. Declutter books, pictures, knickknacks and anything else that is exclusively you. Paint walls in neutral tones. Real estate experts believe certain paint colors inspire buyers to put in an offer and often suggest that sellers repaint their home in these hues to create a blank canvas for optimal staging: Shaker Beige, Jackson Tan, Linen White and Mellow Yellow. (Most paint stores can do color matches) Turn on all the lights. If you don’t have enough light, things can look drab and dreary, especially if you have showings on a gray day. Adding floor lamps to rooms that don’t have enough light brighten things up. Set the table. Set up a blank dining table for a dinner party so there is a wow factor when buyers walk in and see your beautifully arranged table. Add mirrors. Mirrors make rooms look larger. Keep furniture proportional to the room. Strategically placing a minimal amount of furniture in a small space works better than over-crowding it with too much furniture Minimize art and decorations. When staging a room, use paintings that are landscapes or abstract or figurative art that brings out an accent color in the room without being too specific.
Turn your bathroom into a spa. Purchase solid white towels, rugs and shower curtains when preparing to sell your home. These simple luxuries don’t cost much, but can make a significant difference in the feel of the room. Add pops of color. Now that you’ve painted the walls a pleasure neutral hue, think about adding in pops of color. These could be colorful pillows on couches and beds or a bowl of green Granny Smith apples in the kitchen. Clean out and organize closets. Make sure hangers are evenly spaced apart and match your shoes, purses and accessories to give a color-coordinated organized appearance inside your closet. Clear off countertops. Get rid of all clutter in bathrooms and kitchens except for the bare necessities that “read” bathroom (soap dish and a hand towel) or kitchen (coffee machine). Put a cookbook on a stand on a kitchen counter, Kitchens are often the number one priority on a buyer’s list, so make yours look as clean, open and spacious as possible. Don’t forget that while staging the inside of your home is important, the outside-the site of your curb appeal-is just as critical if you want your home to sell fast. Courtesy of parade.com

When MLK Jr. was a little boy, it saddened him that he could not befriend people who were not black. He knew in his heart that just because people may look different on the outside, the contents of their hearts and their character is what makes a person valuable. Martin Luther King Jr. saw a social problem, developed a dream and eventually by taking action, he changed the United States as well as the world. He is still today among the most well-known social activists in the world. • Martin Luther King Jr. led the bus boycott in 1955 that was sparked by Rosa Parks. • He helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, an organization that worked for civil rights. • He was the leader of the entire civil rights movement in the 1960s that called for working out conflicts with kindness and love as opposed to hate and violence. • Martin Luther King Jr. fought for and achieve mandatory equal voting rights in America for blacks and whites. • Martin Luther King Jr. led lunch counter sit-ins where he and other blacks and whites demanded equal treatment in restaurants for people of all races. • Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent peaceful demonstrations proved to the world that action without violence can be effective and successful. • Because of Martin Luther King Jr., it is no longer legal in the United States to segregate or discriminate based on skin color. • The standard has been set for all nations to treat everyone equally regardless of skin color because of the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Courtesy of: http://castle.eiu.edu/

• Five Ingredient Rule: If there are more than five ingredients on a food label, don’t buy it. • Aim for Three Colors: A 2012 Cornell study found that people prefer three food items and three different colors on their plates, compared with more or less of either category. Therefore, instead of reaching for a candy bar, snack on nuts (loaded with healthy fats), fruit slices and a small square of dark chocolate to get a healthy variety of colors, textures and nutrients. • Break Your Routine: It only takes a few weeks to form a habit. So if you always associate 3 PM with a trip to the vending machine, start a tradition to walk around the block for five minutes instead. This may kick your craving altogether. • Make Healthy Food Your Treat: One of the best, easiest desserts? Stash red grapes in the freezer and cap off dinner with something sweet without kick-starting sugar cravings. • Keep the Healthy Stuff Handy: Store healthy foods you want to eat more front and center in your fridge and out on your countertops. • Know Your Trigger Foods: Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth for chocolate and red velvet anything or love salty treats like pretzels, know the foods that send you down the spiral of junk food binging. You’ve already accomplished half of the battle by identifying them. Keep them out of the house. Courtesy of rd.com
Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions, which were adapted by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon: JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once.

14
Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.
SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT
BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER
Are crows as smart as your 7-year-old? Numerous scientific studies indicate the answer to that question is yes. In a study done in 2014, crows were trained to match cards by rewarding them with food when a correct match was made. Then the experimenters decided to complicate the test by showing the crows cards that were not identical but had the same pattern. The crows were still able to match them. Then there’s the story of 8-year-old Gabi Mann from Seattle who began feeding neighborhood crows and in exchange for food, the birds began to bring her gifts. Corvids, the family of birds that includes crows, are thought by many scientists to be among the most intelligent animals on earth. Here are just a few of the reasons why. Keep in mind these conclusions are based on scientific tests. • Crows recognize faces and hold grudges. Just ask some researchers in Seattle what happens when you try an experiment on crows that they don’t like. • Crows have regional dialects and they communicate with each other. • Crows are problem-solvers. A crow unable to crack nuts was observed putting the nuts on the road and waiting until cars passed over them. • Crows use tools. In one experiment, a crow used a wire to retrieve a stick and then used it to reach some food it wanted. It was even smart enough to realize it had to bend the wire first in order to retrieve the stick. • Crows are caring and nurturing. In 1999, Wallace and Ann Collito of Massachusetts saw a very small kitten in their yard. They observed a crow feed the kitten and protect her from other animals.

If imprinted, the bird loses it fear of humans and can’t be released. While rehabilitating, human contact is kept to a minimum. Sometimes caregivers where masks or refrain from letting the bird see their face. This will insure a successful release. For more information about TWRC Wildlife Center, check out

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2016 January 29th-February 21st: “Forever Plaid” On their way to see the Beatles’ American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, a quartet of high school friends’ musical dreams begin and quickly end after a car crash involving a busload of Catholic schoolgirls. March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.
