July 2015
NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS We are already in the summer months and typical Houston summer weather is upon us. With summer, comes the 4th of July. Each year we get many emails regarding fireworks and the 4th of July. Fireworks are legal in the unincorporated areas of Harris County. Nottingham Country is in such an area. Cities can choose to ban fireworks, but we are not in the city of Katy nor Houston. Some subdivisions have banned fireworks, but that took place when the developer banned fireworks in the initial deed restrictions. That did not happen back in the 70’s when NC was developed. It would take a 66.6% favorable vote of EACH section of NC for us to ban fireworks. That just is not possible. We have not had any major issues with fireworks for many years now, as homeowners and parents are seemingly assuming a sense of responsibility for proper care. Many block parties are taking place with neighbors getting together to eat and shoot fireworks. Keep in mind the following regarding fireworks: • Be respectful of your neighbors and stop no later than say 11 PM. • Parents should not allow small children to shoot off fireworks. • Parents need to be mindful of the actions of their juvenile children. • Adults also need to use common sense. • Clean up any mess from lawns and streets. • Make sure all pets are secure in the home or yard, as we typically see more lost pets after the 4th as the fireworks scare them and they find ways to get out.
If everyone follows these recommendations we will have, hopefully, another safe 4th of July. There are a number of homes for lease and sale in NC at this time. That is normal this time of time of year as families typically wish to move during summer school vacation time. If you happen to live near one of these homes and the house is vacant and not being maintained, please call the real estate agent listed on the sign and complain. Our management company cites them when appropriate, but it often helps if the neighbors get involved. The more complaints the better regarding these kind of matters. Summer months mean vacations so please notify the Constables when you leave town and have them place your home on Vacation Watch. They do an excellent job with this and there is no cost! May everyone enjoy the rest of the summer months. Don Mach, NCCIA President

HOW TO ADDRESS THE BOARD DIRECTLY
The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). Additionally, our snail mail address is: SCS Management Services 7170 Cherry Park Drive Houston, TX 77095 281-463-1777, ext. 7132 Email: Nancy Callaway - ncallaway@scsmgmt.com

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

WHY WE CELEBRATE WITH FIREWORKS ON JULY 4TH Ever wondered why we set off gorgeous displays of fireworks in our sky each Fourth of July? Apparently, the history of fireworks in America is as old our country itself. On our first Independence Day celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits. One of our Founding Fathers had even predicted that Americans would commemorate their independence with pomp and circumstance. On July 3, 1776, a day ahead of the Continental Congress’ initial adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Massachusetts delegate John Adams penned a letter to his wife, envisioning the festivities. Fireworks certainly have grown and not only in complexity. The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) estimates that more than 14,000 fireworks displays light up the nation’s sky each Independence Day. PET FRIENDLY 4TH OF JULY TIPS As we prepare for barbeques and fireworks this Fourth of July, think about how to keep your pets safe and calm during this Independence Day celebration. • It is safer to keep your pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations instead of bringing him/her to your neighbor’s party. • Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he/she can feel comfortable. • Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the rockets’ red glare. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stomach upset. In addition, some certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisins can be toxic. • Human products can be dangerous to animals. Avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent and only use special sunscreen that is intended for animal use. • Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. They can be extremely irritating to the stomach, lungs and central nervous system, if ingested. Article courtesy of www.akc.org/press-center/july-4-tips
FOURTH OF JULY TRIVIA • The Declaration of Independence begins with the words “When in the course of human events.” • The Constitution is the legal framework of the United States. • Francis Scott Key wrote the words of the Star Spangled Banner. • The Liberty Bell acquired a crack on its very first ring. • The first United States flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes. • In 1942 Congress recognized the Pledge of Allegiance.

AYUSA INTERNATIONAL IS SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS Ayusa International, a non-profit organization that has promoted global learning and leadership through high school student cultural exchanges for more than 34 years, is kicking off its annual search for families in Texas interested in hosting international students for the 2015-2016 school year. Host families provide the exchange student with three meals a day and a bedroom (private or shared). A professionally trained Ayusa representative supports each host family, student and local school throughout the program year. Ayusa’s exchange students are 15-18 years old and come from more than 60 countries around the world. All students are fully insured, bring their own spending money and are proficient in English. Interested families can learn more about the program and available exchange students and request additional information by visiting www.ayusa.org or calling 281-770-3414 or email hwells@ayusa.org. The process to apply is simple. Families complete the online application, which includes questions about themselves and local high school, references and a background check. Once the application is submitted, the local Ayusa Community Representative will conduct an in-home interview. They can also help each family with any questions they may have about the application or process. After families are fully approved, they can select the Ayusa student they would like to host.

FAMILY OF LINDSAY LANEIGH FERRILL PARTNER WITH SHIELD BEARER TO SAVE LIVES On April 25, 2012, Lindsay Laneigh Ferrill’s life was taken in a horrific dating violence incident. Her mother, Shari Nightingale, and Lindsay’s family and friends have met for years in an effort to honor Lindsay’s life by helping others. Thanks to a recent partnership, Lindsay’s Light Fund was developed as a way to better prevent dating violence. Now Lindsay’s story is an important part of the Shield Bearer Dating Violence Prevention curriculum and with your help we are spreading this crucial prevention program to a larger number of high school students. In 2007, Shield Bearer responded to a local high school experiencing a high number of dating violence incidents. Since then the highly effective Dating Violence Prevention Program has been delivered to over 20,000 students in high schools, churches and community centers. The limiting factor has always been funding.

• 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.
