June 2012 NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS SUMMER LAWN CARE In summer, lawns get hammered. There’s extra wear and tear from weekend play, stress from summer heat and corresponding pressure to cut back on watering due to increased utility rates. But if you start a sensible lawn-care program now, you can strengthen your turf going into summer, help it stay greener and give it a better chance against the ravages of insects and disease. professional for the best advice. mowing. Use a mulching mower with a sharp blade. Since grass clippings contain 3 to 5 percent nitrogen, they feed the lawn if you let them drop (don’t bag them). This allows you to reduce your annual lawn-feeding program by half. infrequently rather than often and shallowly - and early in the morning when there’s less wind and evaporation than during the heat of the day. of critter damage or disease and deal with either immediately.

BEAUTIFUl BlOSSOMS SPRIng YARd OF THE SEASOn It is a wonderful time of the year to enjoy the beauty of Nottingham Country. Our area has received the needed rain and it has been reported we have already surpassed the total rainfall for the year of 2011. This is great news for any attempt to overcome damages incurred from last year’s drought. As reported previously, the clean-up and work needed on the cul-de-sacs has been ordered and began in April. By the time this newsletter is delivered, all work should be completed. We are asking the families living on these streets to PLEASE share the responsibility of turning on and off the sprinklers so the courts may stay appealing in our community. Together, we can keep our values up and enjoy the area too! It is good to see that so many homeowners have worked hard on “reclaiming” their yard after last summer. Let’s keep up the work; it shouldn’t be as difficult as 2011 was.
There have been several new foreclosures the past month. We continue to see about two postings per month. That is a very positive trend.

Green sprinG cleaninG tips Springtime is here and for many people, this often means spring cleaning. This year, give your house a thorough spring cleaning by using healthy methods for you, your family and the environment. Here are a few tips: Open the windows. The best way to get air circulating throughout your house is to let the fresh air in and the stale air out. Avoid the use of traditional air fresheners. An open box of baking soda, dried flowers and cedar blocks are all natural fragrances that can freshen up the air of a room.
713-465-7717
Instead of using chemically-based cleaners, choose vinegar. Vinegar is a very effective cleaner and can be used to clean just about anything and everything. Use it to clean a kitchen floor or wash windows. When disposing of any dangerous chemical products, don’t pour them down the drain, into the ground or in the trash. Read the labels or check with your waste management provider for options. Donate reusable old cabinets, doors, plumbing fixtures and hardware to a local charity or building materials reuse center. Try to use durable items such as mops and reusable rags or sponges. Properly check and clean your home appliances to help ensure they run at peak efficiency. Remove lint and dust from your refrigerator coils and freezer. Clean up lint around your dryer, furnace and any vents leading to or from them. Clean out your closets and collect old clothes and toys for donation or for a garage sale. Replace old insulation with insulation made from recycled paper, glass and other recovered materials. Check caulking around windows and doors and do touch ups to conserve energy and natural resources.

Anyone interested in participating should contact the center at 281-578-0078, please ask for Lisa. If you happen to have a bottle out from 2011, please know that Father’s Day would be a great time to add to it and return it to Pregnancy Help Center. Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4-8, 2012, is an all day, five-day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs and mixologists, shopping, and live music. Held completely inside Reliant Center, the summer event includes cooking demonstrations, a beer brewing competition, wine and liquor seminars and the search for Houston’s best cocktail, margarita and martini. Patrons also can explore both floors of Reliant Center to listen and dance to live concerts featuring country, blues and jazz music, along with disc jockeys playing a mix of club music. “We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot Summer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this festival offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!” Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar and coffee shop. reaL Life * reaL anSWerS June 11th - 14th July 9th - 12th Time: 10 AM-noon Location: The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch Church 22765 Westheimer Parkway, Katy, Community Room Class Size: 12 Tools 4 Teens Program Description: This program is designed for boys and girls, 12-18 years of age. Each session identifies key issues facing teens today, coupled with problem-solving, healthy decision-making and positive goal-setting. Each student will be given a clear message of hope and personal value. With this knowledge, it is our mission to empower students with the understanding that positive choices have positive consequences and poor choices have consequences that can have a life-changing impact. Set on a Christian foundation, the Tools 4 Teens program teaches life-skills and character education. Within this interactive program students will learn information on current issues such as Peer Pressure, Substance Use and Their Consequences, Healthy Relationships, Anger/Forgiveness, Self-Worth, Respect for Others, Sexual Purity and Internet Safety. Testimonials will be shared by special guest speakers who have made good choices and poor choices in these critical areas. The Tools 4 Teens program includes small group discussions and fine arts. Through our scrapbooking activity students create a book showcasing pictures of themselves, family and friends. Students are prompted to set positive goals and journal within their scrapbooks. This fine arts activity promotes positive self-reflection and serves as a keepsake students reflect on through teen years.

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.

Stephanie Schmadeke, Director of the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center (HARC), a not for profit facility which helps people recover from brain injury, is looking for volunteers to teach painting or drawing lessons to their clients. Their location is 6260 Westpark (in the West Loop/SW Freeway area). This would be perfect for someone who has time and a calling to help people or for students who are looking for community service and teaching experience. Even if you are new to art, you would have something to offer. Just give them what you know. That will be more than enough. (Paint mixing, pallets, brush choices, hand positions, perspective, shading, blending, etc.) All would be a great help to someone recovering from Aphasia. The times/days/number of students are all flexible. For more information, contact Stephanie Schmadeke, 713-628-9973 or to learn more about Aphasia, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia.
