NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS
Welcome to the latest edition of Nottingham Country’s HOA Newsletter! Fall is finally upon us and we are moving into the cooler weather. As I am looking around our neighborhood, I am proud to say I think it’s looking better than ever! To make our neighborhood even better, if any of you see anything that could be improved or have a concern about deed restriction violations, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Board via the website, www.nottinghamcountry.org. It will soon be one of my favorite holidays of the year Halloween! On that night if we could all drive extra slowly in the neighborhood, as there are a lot of children in our area trick or treating. The kids only have one thing on their minds that night - how fast they can get to the next house for candy! The last thing they are thinking about is to watch out for cars as they cross the road. Glow sticks are a great way to try to insure the children can be seen. Flashlights are also a good idea for the kids as well as for the parents. Also remember that Daylight Savings time ends that weekend.
Get out your jammies and hot cocoa!! We have an exciting Holiday event planned for December - Polar Express in the Park. On December 5th at 5:30 PM the movie Polar Express will be shown at Rennie Park on a giant 20 ft. movie screen. Please feel free to bring snack, drinks, hot chocolate and blankets or other seating to enjoy the movie. Above all prepare for a wonderful evening with neighbors, family & friends! The annual meeting of the NCCIA will be held on Tuesday, November 17th, at the community center at Kingsland and Houghton. The meeting will begin at 7 PM with registration at 6:30 PM. Nottingham Country homeowners are encouraged to attend. Ballots were sent out by our management company around October 15th. Kathryn O’Brien NCCIA Social Chairman & Co-Deed Restriction Coordinator
NCCIA SEEKS NEW DIRECTOR
The NCCIA Board of Directors is seeking potential candidates to fill an open position on the Board. Current Director Andrew Cummins, has decided to not seek re-election, which will result in an open position. Homeowners who have an interest in the position are asked to go to our website: www.nottinghamcountry.org and under forms, there is an application form which must be completed. Upon completion send it to Scott Murphy, the Board Secretary. His address is listed in the contact information of the website. Don Mach, NCCIA President

INFORMATION REGARDING SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION PETITION For those residents that would like to sign the 25 mp speed limit petition, the group has an email address that you can use to contact them to arrange a time that is convenient, Nottinghamcountry25@yahoo.com. State Farm agent Lisa Reyes McCurry has also generously offered for our residents to stop by her office and sign the petition. Her office is in the Nottingham Country Building located at 20501 Katy Freeway, Ste. 130 located at the corner of I-10 Katy Freeway and Dominion Dr. and she is there on weekdays between 9 AM and 6 PM. Again, this is being sent at the approval and request of the coalition for the lower speed limit as the NCCIA Board of Directors has taken a neutral position. If there is organized opposition to a lower speed limit, the Board will provide the same access for that group. NCCIA Board of Directors

Folks, please LOCK your vehicles!!! These crimes of opportunity will not be happening if vehicles are locked.
One very notable incident that occurred was the Robbery at Shillington and Park Pine. A juvenile that was walking, was approached and hit in the face. The suspect went into the juvenile’s pockets and stole his cell phone. We also have had several cars that were broken into. Actually, all the cars were left unlocked but nothing was taken. The suspects rummaged through the glove box and the center console but no one reported anything missing.

HOW TO ADDRESS THE BOARD DIRECTLY The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St.
Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut
Nottingham Country
banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

NATIONAL ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year. In support of families everywhere who are fighting this disease, consider stepping in and helping out by becoming an advocate, making a donation to Alzheimer’s research or by offering support to a patient or family caregiver.

SPECIAL NEEDS GROUPS ENJOY A DAY TOGETHER AT ST. PETER’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Two of Katy’s communities of adults with intellectual and physical disabilities gathered together August 13th at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. Adults from The Arc of Katy visited St. Peter’s special needs ministry Hearts Helping Others (H2O). They enjoyed a visit from t he Jour ne y Ice snow cone truck, which is operated by Everyday Opportunities, which serves children and adults diagnosed on the autism spectrum. H2O is a ministry of St. Peter’s that serves adults with intensive special needs, specifically those who have finished their secondary education and need additional assistance with life skills such as feeding, mobility and hygiene. H2O meets weekly at the church for socialization and communication opportunities. The Arc of Katy has grown tremendously over time and currently serves about 30 adults with a variety of intellectual disabilities. It provides a safe environment for participants to engage in social and physical activities. They currently meet at Camp Cinco, a Katy Family YMCA facility, four days a week. Everyday Opportunities, a part of Camp Journey, started last year as a full-time day camp for adults on the autism spectrum. Proceeds from the Journey Ice snow cone truck benefit Camp Journey, including Everyday Opportunities and its participants. All of these organizations welcome volunteers. You can reach H2O at fridaynightfriends@stpkaty.org, The Arc of Katy at www. thearcofkaty.org and Everyday Opportunities/Camp Journey at suzette.coates@gmail.com.

Intimate partner violence (also known as domestic violence or dating violence) is the most common cause of injury for women ages 18-44. As many as 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, which equates to more than 10 million people per year in the United States. The community is encouraged to learn more and get involved.
DEER ANTLERS
BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER Male deer or bucks, grow and lose their antlers every year. The antlers begin growing in early spring and by late summer they are fully-grown. Deer antlers are one of the fastest growing tissues known to man and can grow up to ½ inch per day. While growing, which can take up to 4 months, they are covered in a soft, hairy skin called velvet. Velvet is a living tissue composed of a high concentration of nerve cells and blood vessels. Velvet provides protection, blood and nutrients to the antlers. Because of the increased nerve cells on the antlers, they become more sensitive to pain than any other part of the body. Bucks are quick to learn the exact location of their antlers and learn to negotiate their way through wooded areas to avoid contact with limbs and other structures that will cause them pain. In early fall, a hardened ring forms at the base of the antlers and the blood supply to the velvet is shut off. The deer will begin rubbing the velvet off in preparation for the rutting or mating season. During rut, bucks want to show their dominance. Their antlers are used during sparring matches with other bucks. Early in the season, these matches are nothing more than some pushing and shoving but by the peak of the breeding season, they can turn into full-blown fights. After rut, the buck’s testosterone levels fall. This causes a weakening of the tissue and bone. The antlers simply fall off. There is no pain or discomfort to the animal. In a few weeks, the cycle begins again and new antlers will begin to grow. An interesting fact is that there are antlered does. Yes, I said DOES. A doe with velvet covered antlers usually has normal female reproductive organs and can still produce fawns. Hardened antlers on a doe are almost always male pseudohermophrodites, which means the “condition in which an individual of one sex has external genitalia superficially resembling those of the other sex.” These animals have female external genitalia, but have male organs (testicles) internally. TWRC Wildlife Center’s mission is to promote environmental conservation through public education and rehabilitation of native Texas wildlife. If you’d like to know how you can get involved, call 713-468-TWRC or go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.
FALL LAWN CARE - QUICK TIP!
Fall brings back ideal growing conditions for your lawn. Cool nights, warm days, ample rainfall and morning dew are just about as good as it gets for grass. Now the lawn is ready to grow again and is looking for the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. Some experts will say this is the single most important lawn feeding of the year. Apply your final feeding of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food right before the winter months, when grass is prepping for a winter nap. This will strengthen roots and increase nitrogen storage for an early spring green up and a healthier lawn next year. Courtesy of scotts.com

BLACK FRIDAY TIPS • The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good time. • The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store layout! • Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks! • Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make sure you get it early! • Check online: some deals can be had online without the inperson hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you double check! • Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday! Courtesy of marioarmstrong.com/blackfriday

Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES
November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. For more information, contact Tammy Stringer at tammyrstringer@katyisd.org or 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.
KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING

They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, men-

KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. All mentors must make a one school year commitment to a student and complete an application and background check. For more information, contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.
