NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Crowded cul-de-sacs create problems. Based on complaints we have received, we have asked Harris County to do a traffic survey on the cul-de-sacs in our neighborhood that have an island in the middle and no more than six or seven homes on the street. Residents are complaining that people are crowding those areas by parking too many vehicles there. People are parking cars, trailers and boats on both sides of the street, which makes it virtually impossible for a car or an emergency vehicle to get through. All homes in Nottingham have two or three car garages. The driveways will hold at least four cars, so that means there is room for at least six vehicles. I understand that it isn’t always convenient to be moving cars in and out of the driveway, but this is a legitimate safety issue. We may end up having to post “No Parking” signs on those streets. I know some residents will be happy and others will not be, but we cannot tolerate this type of situation. We’ll update you further when we hear back from Harris County.
Delinquent report. As of August 13th, we have 16 homeowners owing for 2015 and beyond. Of that number, three are in bankruptcy, two are vacant homes awaiting foreclosure, four are paying in installments and four have lawsuits in process. Thirty-five homeowners are past due for only 2015. Two homes are listed for sale; one home is in bankruptcy and eight are paying in installments. We have had to file suit on a few others in past years. For those still owing for 2015, the $300 fee is now up to about $475 with added penalties and legal fees. Our attorney has just sent a letter to those folks advising that a lawsuit will be filed if the fees are not paid. If you fall into any of these categories, now would be a good time to bring your account current. Please consider recycling. We have a good number of residents who recycle and we would like to thank you for that. For those who aren’t, please consider doing so. You can start slowly, with just cans and bottles. Every bit helps and it really is much easier than you think. It’s just two separate bins. I find that most of my trash is now recyclable, which is good for our environment. I have a neighbor who recycles so much that she only has one trash bag per month, which is very commendable.

www.dependablecomfort.com This is not a campground. We continue to see way too many trailers, boats, motor homes and commercial vehicles being parked in Nottingham. We will continue to monitor this and you will receive a letter if we see these kinds of vehicles. Per our deed restrictions, these vehicles CANNOT be parked in Nottingham. We do not mind if someone has to bring such a vehicle in for a few days for maintenance, etc., but having them parked for over a week is unacceptable. If you have such a vehicle, it must be stored out of sight from the street or you will need to find an offsite storage facility. Please talk to your neighbors. We receive many calls and emails from neighbors complaining about neighbors. My neighbor’s dog barks. My neighbors have loud parties. My neighbor parks in front of my house. My neighbor is doing weird things in his backyard. Our first question is: “Have you spoken to your neighbor about this?” Nine times out of ten, people say, “No.” I’m sorry to say that the Nottingham Board really isn’t able to help in these situations unless there is a deed restriction violation. Admittedly, talking about some of these issues is difficult, but it is the best way to solve these types of problems. And you’d be surprised that most people are cooperative if you approach them politely. That said, there will always be those who won’t cooperate. Unfortunately, there is no law against being a bad neighbor. If the situation escalates to where the neighbor could be considered a nuisance, please call the constables. They do an excellent job and will look into the matter.
Street and curb repairs coming. The Board is putting together a listing of Nottingham streets that need repair along with broken curbs. This list will be given to Harris County for repair. Keep in mind that the county will NOT repair the portion of the curb that is adjacent to a driveway, as that is the responsibility of the homeowner. Some of these are looking very bad and we would like to suggest that you budget to get them fixed. We have no idea when Harris County will start the repairs and it’s possible they may not agree that the areas on our list are serious enough to warrant repair at this time. But we will keep after them and hopefully will get it done. I am sure we will hear that they do not have enough money to do all the work. Maybe we should just all pay more taxes (just kidding!). Rumor has it. The vacant acreage on the south side of Kingsland between Houghton and Rennie has been for sale for years at what I deem to be a ridiculous asking price. There are rumors that it will be sold and developed. In my 30 years here, I have heard rumors of all of the following being planned for that property: a nursing home, a medical building, apartments and a private school. Unfortunately, our town has a tendency to concrete over every blade of grass, so it’s highly likely that something will be built on this property. It’s a commercial site and we as an HOA have no control over it. Let’s hope it is something that adds to our neighborhood in a positive way. We had two cars broken into last month. Actually on the first one, a female resident found mail and items belonging to someone else in her front yard. A report was done and the mail returned to the owner who lived in another contract (Kelliwood). The other vehicle broken into was a resident’s car that was parked at the “Home Store” located at Fry and Katy Freeway.

As far as complaints, haven’t had too much lately. Appears the major complaint still is running of stop signs. But that is being addressed daily on the different shifts.
Personnel will be on site to assist with the unloading of materials. They will take most every type of household trash with the exception of tires, paint, oil and other hazardous household chemicals.

HEAVY TRASH PICK UP DAY NCCIA and MCUD will once again sponsor a neighborhood heavy trash pick up day on Saturday, October 10th, between the hours of 8 AM and 2 PM. The location will be behind Nottingham Country Elementary School at the intersections of Rennie & Kingsland.
This is a perfect time to clean out the garage, house, backyard and driveway and have it hauled off for free. The next heavy trash day will most likely be in the spring of 2016. NCCIA Board of Directors

The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. In 1984, he opened the Antique Rose Emporium, which specializes in the reintroduction and distribution of historic Old Garden Roses. This developed into display garden/retail centers in Independence and San Antonio, Texas. His work has been recognized in Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines. He is a past president of the board of directors of the Heritage Rose Foundation. In 1991, he published Landscaping with Antique Roses, co-authored with Liz Druitt. He has written two other books, Roses in the Southern Garden, published in 2000 and Empress of the Garden, published in 2014. GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER • Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations.

The James Taylor Key Club is James E. Taylor High School’s (Katy ISD) branch of Key Club International, the oldest and largest service program for high school students in the world and youth division of volunteering organization Kiwanis International. This past summer, the James Taylor Key Club was hard at work, volunteering around the Katy community and organizing fundraisers projects for charity. It made several trips to the Houston Food Bank, participated in a program that will benefit victims of the recent Nepal earthquake and more. Through car washes and a back to school garage sale, the club raised nearly $800, a portion of which will support the March of Dimes and Children’s Miracle Network; both organizations are official Key Club International “major emphasis” programs. The ability to perform such a feat relied solely on the devotion and enthusiasm of James Taylor Key Club’s members. Students lead the organization, taking on all tasks from planning to communication to execution and beyond. This school year, James Taylor hopes to grow its Key Club membership and is preparing to make themselves more accessible and open to the students. Whether it be adding more leadership positions, increasing the efficiency of recording hours, creating more opportunities for bonding with nearby Key Clubs or designing meaningful and symbolic club shirts, James Taylor Key Club is beginning to fulfill its goal of bettering member experience. We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family: Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. KATY CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S CONNECTION ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL LUNCHEON Katy Christian Women’s Connection will be hosting our annual Fall Festival luncheon on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at The Club at Falcon Point, 24503 Falcon Point Dr, Katy. A National ESSAY Competition The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015. Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. BEAR CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH UPWARD BASKETBALL AND CHEERLEADING 2015-16 Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Early registration cost is $80 for Basketball and for Cheerleading until November 2nd. The cost after November 2nd is $90. This year the cost does include the basketball shorts or the cheer mock turtleneck for Cheer. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays, they will have a game for one hour beginning in January. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. They will learn great new skills from encouraging coaches. Registration begins October 1st online. Each child needs to attend one evaluation session. Games start on October 10, 2015. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. INGREDIENTS 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 large onion, chopped 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 pound andouille or smoked sausage, sliced 1/4 inch thick 4 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste Creole seasoning to taste 6 cups chicken broth 1 bay leaf 1 rotisserie chicken, boned and shredded DIRECTIONS Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When hot, whisk in flour. Continue whisking until the roux has cooked to the color of chocolate milk, 8 to 10 minutes. Be careful not to burn the roux. If you see black specks in the mixture, start over. Stir onion, bell pepper, celery and sausage into the roux; cook 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook another 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning; blend thoroughly. Pour in the chicken broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chicken and simmer 1 hour more. INGREDIENTS 4 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate, chopped 1 cup butter 1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted 1 3/4 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups chopped pecans DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Line 24 muffin cups with paper liners. In the top of a double boiler, combine chocolate and butter. Heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture is melted and smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm. Sift flour and sugar together into a large bowl. With mixer on low speed, beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in chocolate mixture, vanilla and pecans. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Do not overbake. Tops should be shiny but give slightly when touched.
