January 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Registration opened September 15, 2015 for this new Houston running event. Girls Inc. of Greater Houston’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by developing programs of informal education that empowers girls to live and succeed in an inequitable world. 10TH ANNUAL KATY WINE FEST TO SUPPORT THE BROOKWOOD COMMUNITY’S “CENTER FOR LEARNING”
The 10th Annual Katy Wine Fest hosted by the Cinco Ranch Rotary will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Café at Brookwood, located at 1752 FM 1489 in Brookshire. The event will begin at 7 PM and end at 11 PM. An anticipated 300 guests will be in attendance to raise money for The Brookwood Community’s ongoing training and outreach programs and to continue support for the “Center for Learning.” The Katy Wine Fest will celebrate wines from across the United States, including several Texas wineries. In total, more than 60 wines will be featured at this year’s Katy Wine Fest. Additionally, many of Katy’s finest eateries will offer light bites and delectable treats to event guests. No Label Brewery will also be onsite sampling different brews in the Beer Garden. The talented Chris Austin Martinez will provide the musical entertainment. An exciting silent auction and Big Board auction will feature unique items with proceeds directly benefiting The Brookwood Community. 24TH ANNUAL CASA CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR
Friday, December 11th and Saturday, December 12th Proceeds from the Christmas Home Tour help Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB) advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children in this community. Through its two programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), the agency touches the lives of more than 400 young victims each month. A Fort Bend holiday tradition, the Tour offers guests the opportunity to view beautifully decorated homes in Fort Bend County while helping to raise much needed funds to support CAFB’s programs serving abused and neglected children. Tour hours are 10 AM until 4 PM on December 11th and 12th with a candlelight tour on December 11th from 6 PM until 9 PM. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN
The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. The child must be accompanied by an adult during the program. The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that.
