Neighborhood Safety tipS from the Parkway Lakes NewsLetter Committee editor!
We each want to do our parts to keep or families, homes and community safe. One of our homeowners reported that there were a group of teens loitering at the pool area. These teens did not belong to our neighborhood and were involved in unsafe activities. Currently we do not have a lifeguard for the pool and there is concern about the lighting in various areas. Please email me Deborahkgreen@AOL.com if you have concerns regarding the safety and security of our community. Here are a few Tips: Make sure you keep your home secure. Doors to the outside of your home should be closed and locked for safety. This includes your garage door. Only open the door for those you know or are expecting and ask for identification and verification of repairmen. Don’t leave cash or valuables in your vehicle in plain sight and keep the doors locked. If you are going on vacation, ask a neighbor keep an eye out for your home and pick up your newspaper. Provide a list of emergency numbers for your children in case of an emergency. Drive slowly in the community and be alert to children playing. Provide a helmet and brightly colored reflective clothing for your children riding bikes. Alert the police to any suspicious or illegal activities. Most of all get to know now your neighbors and their family. Deborah K. Green, Parkway Lakes Newsletter Committee Editor Deborahkgreen@AOL.com
atteNtioN! pet poopS / you Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

gardeNiNg tiPs For aPriL Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering a 1/2 rain or more - then do not water.)

However, it should be remembered that Christians celebrated the resurrection of Christ long before the word “Easter” was used and the word they used for the celebration was “Pascha,” which is derived from and linked to the Jewish festival of Passover. According to Bede, the English monastic historian, the English word Easter comes from the Anglo-Saxon name for the month of April, which was known as “Eostremonath” in the AngloSaxon tongue and since Pascha was most often celebrated in Eostremonath, the English Christians began calling it “Easter.” Bede also notes that the month was named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess Esostre. Rituals related to the goddess Eostre focus on new beginnings, symbolized by the Easter egg, and fertility, which is symbolized by the hare (or Easter bunny). April Fool’s DAy prAnks! In honor of April Fool’s Day, here are five fun and easy pranks to pull wherever you are, including some of our own and some we have rounded up for you: Prank your spouse or even your children during your morning routine. Ladies, tell your husband when he wakes up, “Happy Anniversary! Groggily they will panic, not realizing what day it is until they fully wake up! Another classic prank is to switch the cereal bags and boxes around. Won’t your son or daughter be surprised when their Lucky Charms are actually Wheaties! If you’re stuck at the office, try unplugging your neighbor’s mouse while they have their back turned. It is something fast and easy that won’t risk any of the work they happen to be working on. On most computers, go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Mouse, and select the “Pointers tab. Then change the cursor to the hourglass image. Now the victim will think their computer is stuck on a task endlessly. For those in school, scare a classmate with an unexpected test. As you are walking into the classroom, ask one of your classmates if they are, “ready for the test today? Have a friend walk with you to confirm there is a test and watch them panic! Find a spool of thread that matches your shirt and hide it in your pocket. Leave a length of thread hanging out. Your victim will see it and try to pull it out. It will keep coming and coming! Try it while you are waiting in a line today or while you are running errands. If you are hanging out with some friends, tell them you know a great trick. Put your hand palm-down on the table and balance a full glass of water on the back of your hand. Bet your friend that they can’t balance a glass on both hands at once, with your help to put them in place. As soon as you have the glasses balanced, stand up and walk away. They will be trapped and will have to spill the water to escape. Let the others in your group know beforehand so they can go along with it!

Earth Day, April 22nd, each year marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.

“It was a gamble,” he recalls, “but it worked.” At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. Earth Day 1970 turned that all around. On April 22nd, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coastto-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife, suddenly realized they shared common values. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts. Sen. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to civilians in the United States for his role as Earth Day founder. As the millennium approached, Hayes agreed to spearhead another campaign, this time focused on global warming and a push for clean energy. Earth Day 2000 combined the big-picture feistiness of the first Earth Day with the international grassroots activism of Earth Day 1990. For 2000, Earth Day had the Internet to help link activists around the world. By the time Earth Day rolled around, 5,000 environmental groups around the world were on board, reaching out to hundreds of millions of people in a record 184 countries. Events varied: A talking drum chain traveled from village to village in Gabon, Africa, for example, while hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., USA.

LANDSCAPING & MAID SERVICES
As 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another big campaign. This time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting the status of environmental issues on to the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Each Scout individually completed the requirements for Eagle by demonstrating leadership skills and proficiency as well as by initiating and leading a community service project. Michael’s project benefited St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church’s Youth Program, Ryan’s project benefited The Katy Heritage Society and Ian’s project benefited the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition. The three began Scouting in 2000 as Tiger Cubs in Cub Scout Troop 925. Now as Eagle Scouts they have become “Marked Men by assuming the solemn obligation to do their duty to God, to Country, to fellow Scouts and to Mankind in general. Graduating from high school in 2011, Michael currently attends Midwestern State University, Ryan attends the University of Arkansas and Ian attends the University of Oklahoma. Troop 209, sponsored by St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, was established in 1939 and since then 138 of its members have become Eagle Scouts. Only 4 in 100 Scouts will earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Brownie TrooP 19394 On Saturday January 28th and February 4th, Brownie Troop 19394 ventured out on their first outings. Troop 19394 consists of 2nd graders from the Richmond/Ft. Bend and Katy areas. The girls began working on their first Skill Building Badge - My Best Self - by attending smile school at Dr. Larry Caldwell pediatric dentist office in Sugarland. They followed that up with learning about the Life Flight helicopter and touring Sugar Land Fire Station 6. According to the girls, the most exciting part of the weekend was sitting in the helicopter. Thanks to all who made this possible for Brownie Troop 19394.

From the wicked stepsisters’ hilarious antics to the lovely pas de deux performed by Cinderella and the Prince, the performance is sure to capture the hearts of all. The fairy godmother conjures up fairies representing the four seasons to help Cinderella get dressed for the ball where she and the Prince fall in love. After elves stop time and Cinderella loses one of the glass slippers, the Prince travels the world to find her. Once they are reunited, they marry in an enchanted forest amid waltzing dancers. On Saturday and Sunday, April 21st & 22nd those big, old airplanes with the mighty round engines will be flying again as the Commemorative Air Force’s West Houston Squadron presents its 2012 Open House at Hangar B-5, West Houston Airport. Get up close and feel the prop wash and hear the noise as radial engines power these WWII aircraft. See some the old planes your father, grandfather or grandmother learned to fly for World War II. April 21st & 22nd from 10 AM until 5 PM. A $10 donation per car earns you a day of aircraft and military vehicle displays, museum exhibits and fun. See the West Houston Squadron’s Lockheed C-60 paratroop transport (flying today after a 7 year restoration), the Basic, Primary and Advanced trainers, the CAF Gulf Coast Wing’s B-17 and tactical fighters from the Lone Star Flight Museum, as well as other CAF and privately owned fly-in WWII aircraft. Talk to the pilots who flew them then and fly them now. West Houston Airport is located at 18000 Groeschke Rd., 2 miles north of 1-10 and between Hwy. 6 and Barker Cypress. Food, drinks, gifts and souvenirs will be available. Come on out and honor America. two from Katy advaNCiNg to eLKs state hoop shoot One week after the Katy Elks lodge hosted its annual free throw “Hoop Shoot,â€? two of the six winners who had advanced to District competition are now on their way to State to vie for the next level contest, Regional. Any who survive these two rounds will be Nationals bound in Springfield, MA this summer. Macy Ray, winner in the 12-13 girls category and Bennett Hanks, 8-9 boys winner, will be representing the Gulf Coast Disrtict in Dallas. This is Bennett’s first trip to State, while Macy will be enjoying her third time there. Last year Macy advanced to National competition where she placed fourth. Katy has always provided strong competition to other Elks Lodges in the “Hoop Shootâ€? scholarship program. Rick McCool, along with his wife Shirley, have spear-headed the local “Hoop Shootâ€? for over 30 years, a number of which Rick has also served as District chair. This will be their final year to direct any “Hoop Shootâ€? activities since Rick has chosen to “retire.â€? Knowing Rick, he will still be available to help but he is turning the local and district chairs over to Dan Tass, along with the help of his wife Gail, to direct the winning tradition that has been set by Katy area youth and the Katy Elks Lodge.

An article in the Katy Section of the Houston Chronicle reported that crime in Katy/Cinco Ranch area, which is in both Harris and Fort Bend Counties, had increased. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office recently assigned 50 Deputies to the North County Annex located at the northeast corner of the Grand Parkway and the Westpark Toll Road. Building the Annex and locating the Sheriff’s Patrol Deputies in it will increase patrol time in the north part of the county by 10-15%, which helps decrease response times on complaints and reduce crime.
Parkway from US 90 on the north to connect to FM 1463 on the south. Cane Island will include an overpass over I 10 about a mile west of the I-10 / FM 1463 intersection. This Project has been stalled by the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) insistence that the state and local governments provide full funding for the ultimate I 10 overpass, which is estimated to cost $30 million. Another proposal has been made to FHWA for approval of a two-lane overpass over I 10. We currently await a response from FHWA. Fort Bend County’s North Annex at 22333 Grand Corner Drive Katy, Texas 77494, is open to serve
The two direct connectors at SH 99 and Interstate 10 are now open, significantly reducing traffic congestion at that intersection. TxDOT has begun construction of Segment “E” of the Grand Parkway from Interstate 10 to SH 290. Fort Bend County has begun construction of the first two of ten Grand Parkway overpasses in the portion of Segment “D” from FM 1093 to US 59. Construction of all ten overpasses and of Segment “E” should be completed by year end 2013. Fort Bend County has begun engineering design on the extension of the FM 1093/ Westpark Toll Road. The Project is in two Phases. Phase I consists of four lanes of FM 1093 frontage road from SH 99 to FM 1463, four lanes of main toll lanes from SH 99 to Spring Green Road, and a direct connector east FM 1093 to north SH 99. Construction of Phase I is slated to begin the fall of 2012 and will take 18-24 months. Phase II of the Project consists of four lanes of FM 1093 frontage road from FM 1463 to James Lane in Fulshear and will be about two months behind Phase I. The Project is funded mainly by TxDOT and the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority. The county will construct and operate a “Park and Ride” facility on property it owns on the north side of FM 1093/Westpark Toll Road between Mason Road and Grand Mission Drive. The “Park and Ride” is funded by a federal grant. It is scheduled to be completed by late summer 2013. Destinations from the “Park and Ride” will be to the Galleria Area, Greenway Plaza and the Medical Center. A continuous right turn lane from north FM 1463 to east Interstate 10 was completed in 2011 to reduce traffic congestion at that intersection. Further improvements to FM 1463, a state road, requires the federal government to approve and fund additional feeder lanes from FM 1463 east along I 10 and an overpass at the FM 1463/I 10 intersection. Such approval and funding is not anticipated for several years. To provide additional access to I 10, the county has been working with TxDOT, Waller County, city of Katy, and various property owners and developers to build the Cane Island

Become a TuTor-undersTand our sTudenT’s LifeLines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in March. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. ruoK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. Twice a year Toastmasters clubs all over the world hold contests twice a year in the spring and fall. We held our spring contest, which included the International Speech contest and the Tall Tales contest on February 16, 2012 and were pleased with the turnout of members participating in the contests. We were honored to have several guests and members in the audience to support our members! The first place winners, Deborah and Xiuli, will advance to the Area Contest to be held in April. Congratulations to all the winners!
