Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/ plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.

Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

“This contest is an extension of the adult art show, Bayou City Art Festival. This festival brings in artists from all over the U.S. The middle school contest was open to Houston and surrounding communities. For our students to have won two finalist place in this group is amazing,” said BJH art teacher, Audrey Fuege. With history in various other art competitions students compete, this is only the second year anyone from Briscoe has entered this contest and the first time students will be featured. “We are very proud of our two Briscoe students and can’t wait to see how they compete in this festival,” Fuege said. The girls were chosen to be a part of this competition based on their creativity and detail. When the passion is there, all it takes is a little push from someone with a similar passion. “I wanted to share my love of art with my students just like my teacher did for me,” Fuege said. GEORGE RANCH LONGHORNS FINISH NO. 26 IN NATION George Ranch High School recently received the cherry on top of the perfect treat that was the 2015 football season. Representatives of MaxPreps visited the Longhorns and revealed the team ended the season ranked No. 26 in the nation. The online high school sports leader ranks more than 15,000 football teams every year. The visit was part of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions, sponsored by the Army National Guard. “It’s a special award and special ranking for our kids and football team to be highly ranked, said Longhorn head football coach Ricky Tullos. “We’re proud of our school, kids and community to be a part of such a prestigious award.”

FOSTER’S NWANKWO EARNS GOLD AT STATE WRESTLING Foster High senior Nwankwo Nwankwo earns gold at the State UIL Wrestling Tournament, finishing second in the 5A Division at 285 lbs. And yet, he can’t claim bragging rights in his own home. Little sister Nkechinyere (ChiChi) Nwankwo, a junior, wrestled her way to the Gold Medal for the 5A Division at 215 lbs. Jeffery Rayome is the wrestling coach at Foster. George Ranch High School also had a wrestler make the podium, with junior Diana Luong taking 5th at 138 lbs. James Kirby is the wrestling coach at George Ranch. He was named the Wrestling Coach of the Year for District 12-5A. Kent Jones, also at George Ranch, was the Region 3 Assistant Coach of the Year.

This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing activity during the day it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her. If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you continue to hear the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call. The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings, repair them. Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us. RICHMOND ROSENBERG BOYS & GIRLS CLUB On February 12th, at the Richmond Rosenberg Boys & Girls Club, eighteen scholars participated in a “What I’m Thankful For” Oratory Competition. RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established

INGREDIENTS: 23 large marshmallows 2 cups brown sugar 1/4 cup light corn syrup (such as Karo速) 1 cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped DIRECTIONS: Cook and stir the marshmallows, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and vanilla extract together in a pot over medium-low heat until the marshmallows are completely melted, 5 to 7 minutes.

DIRECTIONS: In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar and cornstarch. Pour in water and bring to a full boil. Turn off heat and add in gelatin; stir until completely dissolved. Let cool.
