Official Newsletter for Parkway Lakes Homeowner Group Published by Krenek Printing Co

Homeowner’s Alert!

We just recently received our homeowner assessment invoices in June 2012. These invoices would have normally been received in December 2011. Some homeowners have chosen to delay paying their assessment dues due to hardship. If you choose to do so, you can request a payment plan from three to eighteen months in accordance with the new HOA Law! If you have already received a payment plan for three months that you have not signed and it is a hardship for you to pay, then you can request that the payment plan be extended to six, nine, twelve or eighteen months.

Give wHAt you cAn to our PArkwAy lAkes leGAl fund! If you are tired of seeing our community declining every year, our HOA account empty, the amenities in ruins (no pool, no clubhouse, unsafe playground), our home values plunging, the continuation of outrageous expenditures, the annual dues increase without justification, non-existence of annual HOA meetings and increased crime rate, please contribute to our cause to remove the developer from the HOA Board once and for all. Developer has no more residential lots in our subdivision but yet, he refuses to recognize the newly voted Board members whom are all residents of our community. Therefore, we have no choice but to take legal actions and put our HOA in the hands of the homeowners who love the community and want to see it thrive! We also would like to begin holding fundraisers to help raise the remaining amount. Please email Bruce at parkwaylakesowners@yahoo.com if you have any ideas or would like to participate in organizing a fundraising event. Any and all ideas are welcome. Please note that if law permits, it is our intention to return the contribution of all the homeowners in the event that we win our legal case by reducing yearly assessment fees until you are repaid for your generosity! Here are 2 ways to contribute: 1 - Deposit funds to the Tradition Bank directly. 2 - Mail your check to the Bank address below (payable to Parkway Lakes Legal Fund): Account Name: Parkway Lakes Legal Fund Account Number: 16062736 Tradition Bank...12300 Bellaire Blvd...Houston, TX 77072

Tips on DenTal Fluorosis A large body of literature has proven the benefits of fluoride in drastically reducing dental caries, especially in children. An optimal amount of fluoride is available in many community water supplies to allow for this benefit to occur. As with everything in life, however, too much of a good thing is not necessarily beneficial. Fluorosis is a condition in which chronic ingestion of above optimal amounts of fluoride can cause defects in the tooth enamel. In this condition, the enamel remains strong but it can show discoloration that may be esthetically displeasing and expensive to mask. Excessive ingestion of fluoride can occur in several ways: if water fluoridation is not properly regulated, if fluoride supplementation is used incorrectly or if a child ingests excessive amounts of fluoridated toothpaste. Improperly reconstituted infant formula may also be a source of excessive fluoride. Several adult teeth begin formation during the first couple months of life, so any higher than normal fluoride intake during that time can affect dental development. Powdered formula contains some fluoride and when fluoridated tap water is added to prepare it for feeding purposes, an excessive amount of fluoride can be ingested. Several articles have shown an association between formula preparation and mild fluorosis. For this reason, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) encourages dentists to educate parents on ways to reconstitute formula to minimize any risks of developing this dental disorder. Your local pediatric dentist should have information about optimal fluoride intake for infants and children and should also be aware of fluoride levels in local water supplies. He/she will be able to guide you in concerns you may have regarding fluorosis and infant formula reconstitution. Submitted by: Faisal Khan, DDS, PLLC

British and ExPat familiEs of Katy British and Expat Families of Katy enjoyed a very special evening at Willowfork Country Club on Friday, June 8th in celebration of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of The Queen’s reign. Over 120 guests were invited to enjoy traditional British food (Bangers ’n’ Mash and Fish ’n’ chips), a Royal quiz (similar to the typical format of a British pub quiz) and entertainment in the form of a 1970’s/80’s disco by our very own in-house British DJ Evelyn Borthwick. Details are important: Hand-picked British goodies arranged into baskets for raffle prizes, some carefully wrapped and brought back in hand luggage from the UK; home-made gravy cooked by one of our organizers and delivered to the Club earlier that day; Union Jack bunting (decorative flaggarlands) air-mailed to an Expat family in Katy by relatives in the UK and custom-ordered cakes

Congratulations samuel luna, ‘Champion of Change’ Samuel Luna was recognized at the White House on May 24, 2012 for his volunteer services to help fellow veterans. Sam’s award “Vietnam Veterans Champion of Change,” is part of President Obama’s “Winning the Future” initiative (whitehouse.gov/ champions). Individuals within the veterans community were honored, especially those who served in Vietnam and have shown continued support for efforts to end veterans homelessness, boost veterans employment, treat problems with substance abuse and develop treatment programs for those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress. Sam Luna, a Vietnam Veteran, is Founder of Vets’ Journey Home Texas, Inc., which is a non-profit organization that provides a weekend retreats at no cost to veterans and active duty military personnel. The weekend is a safe place where the participants can come to learn about what their war experience did to their body. They learn the role that experience continues to play in their daily lives and in their quest to co-exist peacefully. With the help of trained facilitators, in the sharing of their stories they are safely guided to release emotions. There is also a retreat for veterans and their spouses. Mr. Luna is the Chapter Service Officer for four veteran organizations in the Katy, Texas area where he helps veterans navigate the Veterans Administration to obtain medical care and compensation. With the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9182, Sam also serves on the Color Guard assisting with burial detail. He is the Department of Texas Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and serves on the board of Spaulding for Children, a special needs adoption agency. Sam is a retired Supervising United States Probation Officer. He is often called upon to speak about his work, especially to share his knowledge of Post Traumatic Stress (PTS). Samuel Luna was honored as a White House Vietnam Veteran Champion of Change for his work to educate military veterans about Post Traumatic Stress.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.

3 CinCo RanCh SCoutS eaRn eagle Rank awaRd On June 3, 2012, Thomas Knight (BSA Troop 230), Kyle Rumsey (BSA Troop 1288) and Daniel Schwin (BSA Troop 230) celebrated their achievement of the Eagle Scout Award. The Eagle Scout Award is Scouting’s highest and most distinguished award. Approximately 4% of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. In order to earn Eagle Scout, each of the three boys completed a leadershiporiented, non-profit community service project. Thomas’s project involved installing a perimeter fence for Bonnie Holland Elementary’s school garden. Kyle designed and organized a landscaping restoration project for Woodsland Community REC Center in Old Katy and Daniel’s project included construction of planter boxes and outdoor patio furniture for the Willow Fork Volunteer Fire Department. As recipients of this prestigious rank, each has assumed a duty to serve God, country and his fellow man. All three scouts are graduates of Katy ISD - Class of 2012. In the fall, Thomas will attend Missouri University of Science & Technology, Kyle will attend Texas A&M University and Daniel will attend Purdue University.

Estate Your Real r Life! o f e c r u o s Re SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012 In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490. html for details on included items and restrictions.

Pastor Josh Guajardo will begin a new sermon series on August 12, 2012 entitled: “A Tapestry of Brokenness” - 1 Corinthians 12. This classic passage is on Christian spiritual gifts and the unity of the church. Spiritual gifts are often misunderstood and many people focus on the individual gifts instead of the fact they are given for the sake of the whole church. Come and help us celebrate “the church” in our new church building! Visit www.trinity-katy.org for more information. Bible Study for all ages: 9:30 AM - Worship: 10:45 AM.

ruoK ProGram Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court

ATTENTION! PET POOPs / YOu scOOP Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEAsE NOTE - PETs ON LEAshEs It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
