First Annual Chris Saiz Charity Golf Tournament Deemed a Huge Success Thanks to Community Support If the success of the First Annual Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, held recently at the River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy, is any indication of the community support of the young foundation, it is off to a great start. With over $50,000 raised, the mission of awarding scholarships to local students with dreams of continuing their education after graduating from high school, but are in need of some financial assistance, can be accomplished. George Anthony, of Copperfield Ward of the Katy Stake, volunteered along with 220 fellow Mormons, sorting and packaging over 36,000 meals, for the Houston Food Bank.

Second Annual Katy Stake Day of Service Helps Houston Food Bank Katy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent a recent Saturday helping to feed the hungry at the Houston Food Bank. This is the second year the local church members have set aside a day to do some good in the community. In October 2011, Katy Latter-day Saints joined with other Mormons worldwide in local community service projects, ranging from tying quilts to cleaning a cemetery. Community service tends to feel good, so Mormons in Katy decided to set up a special day each fall for serving in the community together. This year’s project, on Saturday, October 13th, was packing meal boxes at the Houston Food Bank. About 220 Katy church members drove to the Houston Food Bank facility. In just a few hours they sorted and packed 28,503 meals for adults, plus another 6,240 pounds of rice and beans, which were repackaged to be used for 8,543 meals for youth. It was a good day’s work of feeding the hungry.

Last May, shortly after the foundation was formed, in honor of Chris Saiz, a much-loved Cinco Ranch High School junior, who passed away as a result of a tragic car accident, three local area students received scholarship funds to Magda & Michael Saiz assist with their college expenses. Saiz was a star basketball player and high achieving student who had dreams of playing basketball in college and achieving his academic goals. In addition to the 150 golfers that attended the event, several Katyarea businesses stepped up to contribute to the tournament. Which Wich provided a delicious box lunch, Mission Burrito was on hand with snacks, Orange Leaf Yogurt donated refreshing frozen yogurt and Stadia Sports Grill served a sit down meal for the golfers to enjoy during the evening program. Golfers and guests were also wined and dined compliments of Ferdie Dupuis of Frank’s International and refreshments sponsored by Global Data Systems and Ooh La La Dessert Boutique.

www.metplumbing.com National POW/MIA Day – There are still families waiting!

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 remembered all Prisoner‘s of War and those who remain Missing In Action on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in honor of national POW/MIA day. Commander David Brasell led the opening remarks recognizing four local residents: Bart Robinson, Ray Essig, Richard (Marianne) Russell and David Walker. Former Prisoner of War Ray Essig, Marianne Russell, the wife of Richard Russell who is currently still considered Missing In Action and former Prisoner of War David Walker were in attendance. We gathered in freedom for those that have made significant sacrifices for the freedom of our nation. Included in the opening remarks, were prayers for a dearly departed comrade and former POW Bud Fuga, former resident of Katy. Bud Fuga, World War II, was a navigator on a B17 and was shot down in January of 1945. He remained a POW until liberated by the Russian forces at the end of the war. Bud went to his eternal resting place in 2011 and will never be forgotten. Bart Robinson, World War II veteran, Pacific Theater, was captured on the Island of Java in April of 1942 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW of the Japanese. Bart was held as a POW for 3 ½ years, while at the same time his brother was also being held as a POW. Ray Essig, World War II, 42nd Rainbow Division, was an infantryman with the Rainbow Division, also captured in January 1945 and was held as a POW for the balance of the war on the Russian front. At the end, he was released by the Germans. He was released on foot and walked to the American lines, the best he could, in advance of the oncoming Russian Army. Ray Essig has documented his POW experience, “Observations of a Pawn, World War II.” A copy is kept in the library of the Veterans Memorial Museum in Katy, Texas. Ray Essig returned home, married and raised a family. Ray Essig’s sacrifices are also documented in the World War II combat history publication, “The Story of the Rainbow” which is dedicated to the soldiers of the 42nd Rainbow Division. Richard Russell, Vietnam War, remains missing in action. He was a navigator on a C 130 aircraft that was shot down north of Saigon in An Loc province in 1972. Six were on the plane and only four have been accounted for. Within the last two months, Marianne Russell, the spouse of Richard Russell, received word that the U.S. government has suspended its search efforts at the known crash site for her husband. Marianne joined the VFW members for its annual POW/MIA and emotionally shared how important it is to “let people know there’s still families waiting and when you have someone affected it means more.” We need to bring the soldiers home to bury on American soil. Marianne and their four year old daughter were living in Taiwan when Richard Russell’s plane was shot down. She wanted to stay in Taiwan for news, but the government ordered her to leave the next day. David Walker became one of 63 hostages held at the American Embassy, Tehran, Iran during President Carter’s administration. He was released January 1980 and assigned to the 2nd Battalion Marines in Okinawa. After many assignments in Hawaii and Oklahoma, he was deployed to Desert Storm and retired in 1994. In 2001, David Walker’s status was changed from “hostage status” to POW status by the U.S. government. David Walker experiences are difficult for words. Imagine being blindfolded, put in front of a firing squad, hearing the click of the weapon and constantly having someone standing over you with automatic weapons day after day. Imagine a P38 being held to your head because the Iranians wanted information, for instance, combinations to the safe upstairs at the U.S. Embassy. Soldiers are trained to only provide their name and rank. During his time in Iran, Walker would rarely leave the Embassy and when they did a translator would accompany them. David Walker, the son of a minister, became a deacon and he continues to find salvation the more he studies God’s word.

Police Holiday Safety Tips & Holiday Shopping Tips 1) Do not leave purchased items visible in the car-leave them in the trunk. 2) While shopping in the evening hours may be less crowded, there are also additional potential risks involved. Park in areas of parking lots that have adequate lighting. Consider shopping with someone rather than going alone. 3) Make sure purses and wallets are secure on your person and you are aware of their location at all times. 4) Keep the amount of available cash you have at a minimum or separate it into different pockets or locations on or about your person. This way all of it is not lost if your purse or wallet is misplaced or stolen. 5) Credit cards offer convenience and security, however, keep trackof all cards and keep receipts to compare to your monthly statement. 6) Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and move to and from your vehicle with confidence and “purpose.” Have keys ready before getting to your car so you do not have to search for them while standing near it. 7) Report suspicious people or activity to law enforcement imediately! 8) Most important is to reduce your own vulnerability and do what you can to minimize the possibility that you could be a victim of a crime or accidental loss.

Home Safety Tips While Away 1) Valuable items, such as televisions, stereos and computers should be inscribed with an identifying number unique to its owner (do not use your entire social security number). 2) Create an up-to-date home inventory including make, model, serial numbers, other detailed descriptions and photographs of items of value (including jewelry). This inventory should be kept somewhere safe, out of the house. 3) At least two light timers should be set to turn the lights and TV on and off in a logical sequence when away for an extended time period to give the appearance that someone is home. 4) The motion detector or other alarm system (if you have one) should be activated when you leave home. 5) Mail and newspaper deliveries should be stopped or arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up should be made when you are away from home for a period of time. 6) Ask a trusted neighbor to tend the yard and watch your home when you are away or have a trusted friend or relative house sit in your absence.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 1313-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Stay Slim & Trim for the Holidays!

Temptation galore awaits us each holiday season. How can you stay slim and trim and avoid gaining weight this Thanksgiving and Christmas? Check out these tips: • Understand the temptations. There are more candies, cookies, cakes and creamy foods over the holidays because when a full stomach means a warm body. Reach for fresh fruits and vegetables. • Have a healthy breakfast. Cakes are so tasty with morning coffee and tea. Why not eat whole wheat bread with SmartBalance butter or even a whole wheat waffle with freshly sliced banana? • Up your fiber intake. Eat plenty of whole grains, nuts, oatmeal and green leafy veggies. Your body may be lacking fiber and as a result, you reach for those tempting foods. • Stay hydrated. Many times we’re actually thirsty instead of hungry. Aim for at least 64 ounces of water, not juices, each day. • EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE. Yes, it is cold outside. Yes, you’re unmotivated. NO, don’t stay home. Get out of that house and IN to a gym.

Is Your Car Winter Ready? Winter has a tendency to sneak up on all of us. But where you can simply dig the winter coat out of the closet when the first cold snap rolls through, preparing your car for winter takes a little more foresight. Is your car winter ready? Here are some tips: • Check fluids. Check your coolant to make sure you have enough, as you’ll be left without heat if you don’t. Keep extra coolant in your trunk in case of emergency. Check your brake fluid, oil and

transmission fluid are also at the proper levels. • Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash. A thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements. • Check your tires. Cold air can cause your tires to lose pressure, so be sure to check again once the temperature drops - the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle can be found on the inside of your driver’s side door. Cracking, presence of wear bars and shallow treads are all indicators that you may need to replace your tires. • Check your wipers. Checking your wiper blades for wear and replacing them if needed can prevent huge visibility headaches once snow and sleet arrive. • Test your battery. The next time you have the car in for an oil change, ask the mechanic to test your battery to make sure it can provide enough starting power once the temperature plummets. • Brakes. While you have your car in, ask for a brake inspection as well, as you’ll need them to be in good working order when driving on slick roads. • Winter emergency kit. In addition to stocking your car with a scraper and brush, it’s a good idea to include a few provisions in case you get stranded in snowy and cold conditions. Pack extra blankets, hats and gloves, snacks like granola bars, drinking water and a first-aid kit. Keeping a collapsible shovel in your trunk is also a good idea in case you get stuck.

Neighborhood/Crime Watch

We can all participate in our Neighborhood/Crime Watch! It is easy! It’s about neighbors looking out for each other. When suspecting criminal activities, you are encouraged to contact the police and not to intervene. Call Fort Bend Sheriff at 281-341-4665. An alert and supportive neighborhood is the greatest single defense against crime. By getting to know your neighbors and their vehicles, you will most likely be aware of suspicious people, vehicles and/or sounds that could indicate criminal activity. Be a good neighbor. Report suspicious activity to the police and send an email alert to deborah@plhg.org so that it can be shared with our neighbors. Some neighbors are interested in organizing a neighborhood watch. We need a Co-chair and committee members. Please let us know you are interested!

ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70 TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.”

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and resubscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

leash.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

HAPPY Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

Hanukkah In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his broth-

ers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.

The right way to give • Give with a cheerful heart. • Give within your means. An expensive gift doesn’t mean it’s the best. • Giving comes from your heart, not from the wallet. • Some gifts are priceless... love, time, effort, encouragement, prayer, etc. • Observe the needs and wants of the person you’re giving to. Consider his/her hobbies, lifestyle and what he/she wears. • Be creative, imaginative and crazy. • Shop for gifts early to avoid last-minute frantic rush.

Get Into the Christmas Spirit Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com
