When suspecting criminal activities, you are encouraged to contact the police and not to intervene. Call Fort Bend Sheriff at 281-341-4665. An alert and supportive neighborhood is the greatest single defense against crime. By getting to know your neighbors and their vehicles, you will most likely be aware of suspicious people, vehicles and/or sounds that could indicate criminal activity. Be a good neighbor. Report suspicious activity to the police and send an email alert to parkwaylakescommunity@inbox. com so that it can be shared with our neighbors. Some neighbors are interested in organizing a neighborhood watch. We need a Co-chair and committee members. Please let us know you are interested!

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY • Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

On February 20th, thirty-one 7th graders and seven 8th graders from LCISD’s Briscoe Junior High in Richmond, Texas, joined almost 45,000 students from more than 330 schools in 42 states to take an online math test (MathCON Test) hosted by the University of Illinois at Chicago. “It started in 2008 with 125 students. This year, almost 45,000 students were tested from more than 330 schools with 700 students being selected as finalists (grades 5 - 12). MathCON has two rounds, the first round is administrated at each participating school’s own campus via an online test. The second round is in Chicago and only for those that were invited based off the first round scores,” said Randall Revere, head of MathCON for Briscoe.

Briscoe had four finalists out of a total of nine junior high students from all across Lamar CISD. Meggie Wang, Chase Albright, Christian Navarro all seventh graders and Godknows Peter as their only eighth grader. The students were introduced to MathCON by their math teachers and had the options to take the test or not. Some took the test because their teacher or parent encouraged them to, others were already interested.

A change in Briscoe’s learning history or shall I say English history, occurred at Briscoe Junior High. On Friday, March 20th and Monday, March 23rd a representative for the writing seminar arrived to our school to give our students a crash course in expository essays.

Zoie Voskuhl, among other students attended through recommendation from their teachers. Students would receive a white sheet of paper with their name and the date they were to attend the workshop. When the idea for the seminar sprouted around the school you could hear most kids hoping that they wouldn’t be chosen for the seminar; however at the end of the experience this as well.

Briscoe also had five Eagles out of 16 total junior high students become alternates, Luke Damoiseaux, Sophia Lazcano, Mckenzie Quarles, Joseph Burrhus and Hunter Johnston all seventh graders. Even though the alternates didn’t exactly make it to the finals, many of them were happy with the fact that they were even given the opportunity to participate in taking the test.
We have a new artist legend at Briscoe Jr High. Xin Zhuang is the new Leonardo Da Vinci. In Spring 2015, Zhuang, an 8th grader at Briscoe, got his art published in the article, “Texas Register.” Students’ artwork is used to decorate the front cover and Art student, Xin Zhaung, with his art teacher, blank Audtrey Feuge and Principal, Michael Semmier. pages of the “Texas Register.” Teachers throughout the state submit arts of different kinds from kindergarten through 12th grade. The artwork from these students dress up the gray pages and introduce students to the important facet of state government. Zhuang’s drawing was like no other. He had drawn an eagle soaring above tall trees and grasses. “It’s not about winning, it’s about trying your best. I don’t care if I lose, because my friends are happy with and for me,” said Zhuang.

Zhuang has gotten his art published in an article and won ribbons for his artwork. There are many different kinds of art that get published in the article, “Texas Register.”
BRISCOE’S FAMILY BOND
People at Briscoe are close with the faculty members, others are related to them. Most teachers love having their kids at Briscoe with them. It helps them have a closer bond with their children. Some teachers, such as Mrs. Cawthon, have eighth grade kids. This means next year, the parent-child-duo will be split up. “When my daughter leaves, I’ll be really sad, but still thankful she will be next door. I have a 10th grader at Foster and several times I’ve ran next door and it’s nice to have that option,” said Cawthon.
Students actively answer the many questions that relate to their everyday lives.
Other families consist of more than just a duo. The Tamez/Garcia family is a family consisting of: one grandmother, one aunt and a brother and sister who all attend Briscoe. Sandi Tamez, her mother, her niece Kirsten Garcia, 7th grader and nephew, Anthony Garcia, 8th grader all call Briscoe their home. Not many parents get to see their child grow in such an interactive way as the parents at Briscoe do. Parents like nurse, Tiffany Campbell have gotten to see their child grow since the very beginning.
BUILDING EDUCATION
On Thursday, March 5th some very important guests came to Briscoe Junior High. The Fluor Team (Chris Nat, John Erford, Matthew Bispring, Garrett Bruce and Ella Aubing) came to teach Briscoe’s 7th and 8th graders what it’s like to be an engineer. Fluor is a 40,000 person engineering construction company. In this seminar, the Fluor team talked about what it is like to be an engineer and about the company Fluor. They showed Briscoe students the travel and work experiences and average engineer would have. Fluor changed a lot of students’ minds about engineering. This is an experience most people don’t get to have until they are in college or high school. Several students agreed this was a great opportunity.

AYUSA INTERNATIONAL IS SEEKINGHOST FAMILIES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS Ayusa International, a non-profit organization that has promoted global learning and leadership through high school student cultural exchanges for more than 34 years, is kicking off its annual search for families in Texas interested in hosting international students for the 2015-2016 school year. Host families provide the exchange student with three meals a day and a bedroom (private or shared). A professionally trained Ayusa representative supports each host family, student and local school throughout the program year. Ayusa’s exchange students are 15-18 years old and come from more than 60 countries around the world. All students are fully insured, bring their own spending money and are proficient in English. Ever wondered why we set off gorgeous displays of fireworks in our sky each Fourth of July? Apparently, the history of fireworks in America is as old our country itself. On our first Independence Day celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits. One of our Founding Fathers had even predicted that Americans would commemorate their independence with pomp and circumstance. On July 3, 1776, a day ahead of the Continental Congress’ initial adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Massachusetts delegate John Adams penned a letter to his wife, envisioning the festivities.

As we prepare for barbeques and fireworks this Fourth of July, think about how to keep your pets safe and calm during this Independence Day celebration. • It is safer to keep your pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations instead of bringing him/her to your neighbor’s party. • Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he/she can feel comfortable. • Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the rockets’ red glare. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stomach upset. In addition, some certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisins can be toxic. • Human products can be dangerous to animals. Avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent and only use special sunscreen that is intended for animal use. • Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. Thanks to a recent partnership, Lindsay’s Light Fund was developed as a way to better prevent dating violence. Now Lindsay’s story is an important part of the Shield Bearer Dating Violence Prevention curriculum and with your help we are spreading this crucial prevention program to a larger number of high school students. In 2007, Shield Bearer responded to a local high school experiencing a high number of dating violence incidents. Since then the highly effective Dating Violence Prevention Program has been delivered to over 20,000 students in high schools, churches and community centers.
