MONTHLY HOA MEETINGS

STREETLIGHTS

Make sure you know what is happening in the Pin Oak Village HOA meetings by attending. Meetings are held at 6:30 PM on the second Wednesday of each month.

The MUD taxes the residents pay help pay for the streetlights whether they work or not. If a streetlight is out or not working properly, please call 713-207-2222 and report the problem. Each pole has a number on it and you will need to give this number to the operator as well as the names of the closest streets. Last year we had a couple of lights out and the result was vandalism to several mailboxes. We need all lights working to keep our neighborhood safe. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us the cost of these lights.

CLUBHOUSE RENTALS There are still lots of good dates available for clubhouse use. We would like to remind all residents that the clubhouse is for Members Only and must be current on all fees. Residents are limited to two free uses per year. There is a $100 DEPOSIT REQUIRED THAT WILL BE REFUNDED, IF THE CLUBHOUSE IS KEPT CLEAN. The clubhouse is also being reserved for possible holiday party use by the Board, for the benefit of Pin Oak Village residents. These parties will be scheduled soon, so watch for upcoming events at our website, www.pinoakvillagekaty.com. To schedule lifeguards for any pool party, contact Sweetwater pools at 281-300-6077. There is an additional form for Pool Rental, as well as cost, that must be filled out and paid prior to scheduling lifeguards. No pool party can be had without the approval of Sweetwater and at least one additional guard. Contact Skip Roberts for clubhouse rental information at 281-701-7547.

TRASH PICKUP UPDATE The correct contact for trash pickup for Pin Oak village is as follows: Waste Corporation of Texas (WCA) 281-368-8397. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us the cost of trash pickup. Our MUD directors are saving us thousands of dollars by paying for the lights and trash each month.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Please be a good neighbor - keep the sidewalks clear of vehicles, check for low hanging tree branches and overgrown shrubs near the sidewalks, clean up after your pets, put trash at the curb only the night before and remove garbage cans from visible sight except for trash days.

FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid

of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact Ft. Bend County Animal Control 281-342-1512

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP Just some friendly reminders since there have been some recent complaints about pets in our neighborhood. Being a responsible pet owner is much more than just providing adequate water, food and shelter for your pet. Domestic pets are completely dependent on their owners for their welfare. • Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment. If you can’t make the commitment, don’t get the pet. • Choose a pet that fits your lifestyle. Don’t get a high energetic dog, if you don’t have the time to exercise him. If you can’t afford grooming or can’t do the grooming yourself, pick a low maintenance dog. • Spay or neuter your pets. There are too many homeless animals without adding to the problem. • Don’t make your dog a “backyard dog.” Dogs strive on companionship and need to be with their human pack.

• Be aware of weather conditions. Leaving your dog in the car on a hot day or in the yard without shade or water is risking your dog’s life. • Make sure your home is “pet” safe. Pesticides, medications, household cleaners and some houseplants (dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth and mistletoe) can be deadly to your pet. Keep them out of reach. • Provide veterinary care for your pet. Keep their vaccinations up to date and make sure they have annual checkups. • Keep identification tag on your pet... it is your pets ticket back home. Both dogs and cats need ID!! Microchipping is good too, but an external tag is essential, it could mean the difference of your neighbor returning your pet to you or turning him into the pound! • Obedience train and socialize your animal. • Don’t let your pets run loose. Dogs should be walked leashes. Any outdoor off leash access should be secure in a fenced area. An outdoor cats average lifespan is 3 years, an indoor cat’s average lifespan is 14 years. • Provide your pet the proper diet. Obesity can be as deadly as malnutrition. Be aware that some foods can be deadly, such as chocolate and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis. • Make sure your pet get proper amount of exercise. • Take extra precautions during holidays like Fourth of July. It is the scariest time for pets, make sure your pets are secure indoors. Also protect your pet during Halloween. • Be kind to your pet and show him with love... remember you are his world. • Take special care of your pet during their senior years. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. Families participate in the program by reading books and completing optional “challenges” that can be done at home. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who complete the program by reading 36 books or for 6 hours - 6 books per week or for 60 minutes per week - are eligible to receive a book bag for the family and will have their named entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 7th. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www. fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club SignUp” image, which became available January 24th. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www. ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

• When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

It is so easy to keep putting things in your secret pile in that room or area no one sees. But one day someone will notice! Be wise - organize! Here are some easy DIY tips: • Shoe Boxes as DIY Dividers: You can make a completely customizable set with just scissors and shoe boxes. Simply cut the boxes in half by length or width, as needed for your space, then tuck into a drawer. March 2016

• Picture Frames as Dry-Erase Board: Stay on top of your errands with an eye-catching DIY memo board: Frame a pretty scrap of fabric or wallpaper, hang in a high traffic area and use a dry-erase market to jot down reminders on the glass. • Stepladders as a Bedside Table: This minimalist take on a night table holds only the essentials-a lamp, a smartphone, water-forcing you to edit which items spend the night there. • Magnets as a Medicine Cabinet Organizer: Mount a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet door to store tweezers, bobby pins and other grooming tools in plain sight. • A Wine Rack as a Wall Organizer: Hang an unused wine rack on the wall of your garage or supply closet to stash rags, tools, extension cords and more odds and ends. House Sparrows and Starlings can take over your Purple Martin house. They can prevent Martins from nesting, destroy their eggs and kill nestlings. Do some research on the internet and find out how you can become a successful Purple Martin landlord. TWRC Wildlife Center is a Houston-based wildlife rehabilitation and education center available to anyone needing assistance with wildlife. Check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or call 713-468-TWRC and don’t forget to donate so we can continue to help wildlife as we’ve done for 36 years.

THE SCOUTS ARE COMING

By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center For some, there’s nothing more exciting than the arrival of the migratory bird, the Purple Martin. They are the largest of the North American swallows. Flying from South America where they winter, they faithfully return to the same locations every year. The first to arrive are called scouts and they are usually the older males. They are not looking for nesting areas but simply returning to where they nested before. The younger males follow and then the females arrive. Both sexes help build the nest, which will be home to 4 or 5 babies. As soon as the chicks leave the nest, the Martins start congregating in large flocks and roost together in preparation for their trip south. Have you ever heard anyone say, “Location, location, location?” This is especially true if you want to attract Purple Martins. They are colonial nesting birds, which means they occupy apartment-type houses. Since Purple Martins feed while in flight, they prefer their housing be placed in the open, away from human housing and trees. They eat mosquitos, beetles, wasps, dragonflies and other day-flying insects. Pin Oaks Village

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST! Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness.

Initially conceived as a way for Katy ISD employees at the administration building to help students and their families, Food for Families has burgeoned into a communitywide initiative that is now primarily supported by individual, private contributions. And for the first time, local eateries donated a portion of their proceeds during the inaugural “Food for Families Restaurant Week,” ultimately helping to provide gift cards for 40 families. Food for Families, a Katy ISD Partners in Education yearly initiative, unites our Katy ISD staff and community in holiday support for select students and their families. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2016 March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press.
