ELEMENTARY EDUCATION CORNER FOR AT HOME PRACTICE
By: Jeff Carrus This month we will discuss behavioral expectations and structures that you can practice at home with your students to help them improve in school. It is extremely important to reinforce behavior at home so students see the connection between school and home. One way to do this is to check your child’s daily communication from teachers and give specific praise and correction when needed. For example, if your child has done very well in completing their work then celebrate that with them by saying, “You have really been focusing on getting your work finished in class and putting effort into it” rather than just telling them, “Great job today.” This gives them some specific feedback on what to continue doing. The same goes for providing correction. If your child needs to work on talking at appropriate times then give them specific feedback and practice doing this. Show them what it looks like to talk at appropriate times and reinforce them for doing this at home.

Positively reinforcing correct behaviors has a much more significant impact on changing behavior than just giving consequences for misbehavior. One reinforcement system you may use is an incentive system. Have a family meeting where you discuss the expectations and what you want them to do and how they should behave and write this down on a chart for them to reference. Also come up with some incentives they want to earn such as iPad time, playground time, a special treat or anything else you are comfortable with and write these down on a list. You may find a small container and beads and tell your child that every time they display certain behaviors in school and at home, they earn 3 beads. When they fill the jar with beads, they can earn an incentive from their list. Post the expected behavior chart and incentive list where they can see them and refer to them when making corrections. It is crucial to separate the misbehavior from the child and say, “We love you and are not mad at you, but the behavior you chose is unacceptable in this family”. It is important to have consequences but make sure your child knows it is because of their choice and next time they can choose to act differently. A great resource for students who may struggle with certain behavioral expectations is www.pbisworld.com. Here you can click on a wide variety of behaviors and if that sounds like what you are seeing click yes to get to a list of intervention strategies. You can then click on the intervention strategy for more details to see if this is an intervention that may work at home or school.
COMMUNITY VOTE - IN PROGRESS
Go to www.raintreevillage.com for merger vote ballot. Starting with the community crawfish boil, Raintree Village HOA commenced mailing and presenting information regarding annexing the sections currently under construction. The growth within our community is consistent with Katy as a whole. Raintree Village will expand by approximately 300 homes. Several years ago the ability of the HOA Board to annex by Board vote expired. Therefore, our by-laws require a two-third’s approval vote by our community to annex. In the interim, the new sections (8 through 13) formed a separate HOA with 3 Board members. This HOA will run in tandem with Raintree Village HOA with the plan of merging both HOAs in the near future.
No Service Charge With Repair
The other HOA will be using our exact deed restrictions with a few caveats. It should be noted that Raintree Village HOA will have full insight and voting rights for the new HOA to ensure consistency prior to merger. A joint use agreement has been signed providing access to our facilities for the new HOA’s residents. The agreement covers 12 month that can be renewed annually but voidable when either we merge HOA’s or the community decides not to annex.

New Amenities: Under the current proposal, the builders and developer with the backing our MUD Board have proposed the following amenities in the new sections. This will cost no additional money for residents nor require an increase in annual dues. 1. 4 sections of land in section 13; this is enough land to add another community pool in the future. 2. A new Clubhouse to be used for Board meetings, annual meetings and future community events. The HOA Board would look into the process of renting the clubhouse to community members for personal events. 3. Landscaping the 4 parcels to appeal to the community. 4. Small Picnic area and some picnic tables.

Community Impact: 1. In the short term, we understand that this will put more people in Raintree Village and that expenses will go up. Based on conservative estimates and budget projections, we believe anticipated increases related to contract deputy patrol and amenity support costs can be covered. 2. The long-term impact is more financial flexibility for the Board to provide more services or projects that benefit the community, while keeping dues as low as possible. Expenses rise every year but with a bigger community base our need to raise dues lessens. 3. A community clubhouse allows us an opportunity to host Board meetings and other community events. We do not have to annex, that is in your hands and your right to vote. However, the long-term benefits, new amenities and working as one community with the additional sections are worth it. If you have any concerns or questions please let us know.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
You are reminded of our standing committees, which need ongoing volunteers. The committees are as follows: • Pool Committee (organizes Official Pool Opening Party & monitors activities during pool season) • Crime Watch Committee (organizes National Night Out) • Newsletter - submit articles • Yard of the Month - select section winners We also need volunteers for the listed community activities. Volunteering is an opportunity to make Raintree Village a better community for all the residents. If you’re interested in volunteering for any of the noted events or committees, contact Walonda Hollins at hollinsw@sbcglobal.net.

TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BURGLARY
It cannot be stated enough of the importance of minimizing our exposure to crime. Our contract deputies stated that certain vehicles have increased exposure to theft, specifically the tires and rims. The vehicles commonly targeted are Ford F150, Dodge Chargers and Chevy Tahoes. Although these vehicles have rim locks, another safeguard is to park your vehicle in the garage or close to another vehicle. Anyway, you can either slow down or cause attention will help reduce the risk of theft. Since we are approaching the holiday season, you need to be mindful to breakdown bags and boxes of large purchases, if possible place in trash bins or bags. Although it’s time consuming and burdensome, it doesn’t call attention to such items in your home. 1. Take the time to meet and know your neighbors. Let them know if you notice anything unusual such as cars or people at their homes. 2. Make sure to close garage doors when at home & away. 3. Don’t keep garage door openers in the car, take them in the house with you; a garage door opener makes it easier for someone to enter your garage or house to remove personal property. 4. Keep car doors locked and take valuables either in your home or ensure the items are not in plain site; remember to take down the attachment for your Garmin too, as it gives alerts individuals that something valuable may be in the car. 5. If possible, keep a car in a driveway as it gives an impression that someone is home. 6. Keep all shrubs and plants at a level low enough that passing by officers or other residents can see if someone is lurking in those bushes! Shrubs should also be trimmed high enough to show “feet” of someone hiding in them. 7. Have keys in hand before leaving the store, house or office, avoiding standing by the car searching for them.

Make sure you close blinds when you are inside at night with the lights on, potential burglars can see right inside and know who is at home. 10. Use sensor lights outside the home. It deters criminals by “spot lighting” their efforts to enter your home. 11. Use double key locks: locks that require a key from the outside and from the inside. 12. Repair any broken areas of your fence, reducing the access of potential burglars or mischievous kids. 13. When on vacation, let your neighbor(s) know so they can keep an eye out for suspicious activity. You can also inform the Harris County Deputy’s Office serving our area. County officials want to remind residents of the Ordinance 5.3 requiring that addresses or building numbers be legible and visible from the street. The section states the numbers must be in Arabic numerals at least four inches in height and clearly visible. The number should be placed on, above or at the side of the main entrance so the number is clearly visible from the public right away. Whenever a home entrance is more than 50 feet from a public right away, a number should also be placed at the end of a driveway or property entrance.
SATELLITE DISHES
It’s come to HOA’s attention that the installation of satellite dishes on some homes violates the deed restrictions. Satellites are expected to be installed out of sight of public view. The Association appreciates residents taking the time to ensure compliance.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in

When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

Getting Someone a Musical Instrument for Christmas? Don’t forget the Music Lessons! Piano • Guitar • Bass Guitar • Violin • Viola • Cello • Voice & Drum Lessons All in one location!
Are we the right music school for you? We are less than 4 miles from you, located at 3719 N. Fry Rd. The Conservatory of Music currently teaches over 21,000 private music lessons per year. More music students take lessons at The Conservatory of Music than at any other music school in Katy.
CONSIDER FIVE BENEFITS OF BECOMING A CONSERVATORY STUDENT: 1. Piano, guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, voice and drum lessons in one location. Schedule lessons for different children at the same time - saves hours of driving and waiting. 2. The largest & most qualified teaching faculty in Katy. Between our two locations, in Cinco Ranch and North Katy, we have over 30 instructors, all with either University training or professional performance experience. Our music instructors are dedicated to learning about your personal musical goals and in helping you to achieve them. In addition to their teaching credentials, our instructors have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and dedicated to teaching you the style of music that you want to learn. 3. Open 6 days a week to fit your busy schedule. 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday 4. Free, all inclusive, “optional” recitals so that your family & friends can share in your musical journey. Approximately every May and December, our students have the option of performing in our recitals. Students are not required to perform but many choose to. Parents never have to pay admission or any related fees for these recitals. 5. A comfortable waiting room for parents, so that you can relax or get work done while you wait. Instead of waiting in a music retail store showroom, with all the noise and other distractions, our clients enjoy a spacious, professional waiting room with comfortable chairs and magazines. We also provide observation windows on every door so that you can watch your child’s lesson while you wait, or if you prefer, you can sit in on their lessons at any time.
