ELEMENTARY EDUCATION CORNER FOR AT HOME PRACTICE

By: Jeff Carrus Knowing sight words or high frequency words is essential in the reading development of children. If students do not know these words automatically (in less than 3 seconds) they will struggle in their reading and you will not see them progress to the next reading level. Sight words (high frequency words) are those words that we cannot sound out most of the time due to their spelling patterns. Students need to know these words just by seeing them and remembering them. You can ask your child’s teacher for a list of the high frequency words they should know at their grade level to help practice at home. If you notice they struggle in recognizing these words then ask for the high frequency word list from the previous grade level. Practicing high frequency words can be exhausting and boring for your children and for you so you need to find ways to make this repetitive practice fun. For example, take 1 word your child doesn’t know and write it on an index card. Then spell the word and write each letter on separate index cards. Show your child the card with the word on it and tell them the word and have them repeat it and spell it 2 times. Then hide the card with the word and mix the letters up and tell them you challenge them to spell the word. When they complete this have them pull each letter toward them as they spell the word and then say the whole word. Then “try to trick them”

and mix the letters up again and see if they can spell it. Do this a few times and only practice 1 or 2 words a night. I would suggest reviewing the word from the previous night before moving on to the next word. Keep going back and practicing the words they struggle with from time to time. This practice is fun for them but also has them repeat the spelling and word over and over which will get them to internalize it. Some other fun ways to practice these high frequency words is to have them spell and write the words with chalk outside, put shaving cream down and have them spell the words in shaving cream or even put the word on a piece of duct tape on your shirt or their hand and every time you point to it they have to say it and spell it correctly. You could even play memory or make a PowerPoint of the words to help them practice them. Another key piece of this would be to find a book with the word in it and have them find the word on the page. They don’t even have to be able to read the book but just locating the word helps them relate it to text. It would also be beneficial to have them think of a simple sentence for the word and write it in a journal each night after you do the index card activity from above. The more they see and say these words, the better they will become at recognizing them which will allow them to progress quickly in their reading.

BE SURE ADDRESS IS CLEAR FROM THE STREET

Indoor Air Quality

County officials want to remind residents of the Ordinance 5.3 requiring that addresses or building numbers be legible and visible from the street. The section states the numbers must be in Arabic numerals at least four inches in height and clearly visible. The number should be placed on, above or at the side of the main entrance so the number is clearly visible from the public right away. Whenever a home entrance is more than 50 feet from a public right away, a number should also be placed at the end of a driveway or property entrance.

SATELLITE DISHES

It’s come to HOA’s attention that the installation of satellite dishes on some homes violates the deed restrictions. Satellites are expected to be installed out of sight of public view. The Association appreciates residents taking the time to ensure compliance.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES 2016-2017 ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY MODIFICATION

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve an attendance boundary modification (ABM) designed to address the opening of three new campuses and alleviate overcrowding at campuses landlocked with 125 percent capacity. This ABM will provide muchneeded relief to Rylander and West Memorial elementary schools, as well as, balance enrollment as the District prepares to open two elementary schools and one junior high next school year. During this entire process, the District welcomed feedback from the community through an online survey. Nearly 9,000 parents, staff and community members completed the survey and dozens shared their feedback during the open forum at various Board meetings. These comments helped shape the ABM and addressed major needs and concerns cited by parents and community. The District presented to the Board a preliminary ABM proposal on November 16th and then an updated option on December 7th to better address the overcrowding at West Memorial Elementary. The Board approved the updated ABM option on December 14th. The District estimates that approximately 3,600 students will be impacted by the approved attendance boundary modifications. Katy ISD will be notifying all impacted families in January/February 2016. For more information about the ABM process, including maps of the approved attendance boundary modifications, visit the District’s ABM webpage.
