THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER
(from the Settlers Village HOA Board) Please take a moment to visit the neighborhood’s new website located at www.settlersvillagehoa.com . The Board is very interested in any and all feedback. The Harris County Municipal Utility District (MUD) Board #105 is an independent governmental agency that is completely separate from the Settlers Village Homeowners Association (SVHOA). Its members are:
Happy Holidays! December 2012
Steve Breard - President Charles LaConti - Vice President Stanley Craig - Assistant Vice-President Kathy Cones - Secretary Pam Brandenburg - Assistant Secretary All are residents and property owners within the district. The MUD Board can be contacted via their attorney Taylor Goodall of Smith, Murdaugh, Little & Bonham at 713-652-6500. Please also remember the rules regarding personal sign postings. The placing of private signs of any type onto county owned sign poles or Centerpoint owned light poles is expressly prohibited per Texas House bill. Please do not subject yourself to the embarrassment of having your signs removed by the HOA or having a deputy come tell you that they must be removed. Jurisdiction for enforcement is shared by the Harris County JP and District courts. While the deputies have been asked to be lenient toward illegal signage, a discussion is now underway to allow the deputies to cite offenders as more than enough time has passed to allow everyone to become familiar with the new rules.

Lastly, a quick reminder that Steve Breard is still collecting aluminum cans for the neighborhood with all proceeds going to the capital improvement fund for our pool. In 2010 we collected $278 and $297 in 2011. We have collected $125 so far for 2012. Please rinse and bag the cans to minimize the attraction to bugs. They can be dropped at 6642 Cove Lake. Thanks all and good luck to everyone; Settlers Village HOA

As indicated earlier this year, Settlers is giving increased attention toward property upkeep and that means enforcement in the form of forced mowing and legal action is on the upswing. Property owners need to understand that keeping your yard mowed and trimmed is one of the least expensive methods to maintaining the property values in Settlers Village. And just the same as with maintenance fees, a timely action and response to violations is your obligation as a resident and/ or a property owner. Ignoring a problem will not make it go away but it will make it more expensive as the lawyers become involved.

This applies to home schooled children as well. Officers have instructions to either arrest offenders or take them home to their parents. As always, if you see anything or anyone that looks suspicious or out of place, please call the deputies to investigate at 713-463-6666 or use 911 if it is an emergency. Deputies do not need to come by your house is you feel that might cause problems or endanger your family. Please remember to abide by the laws the legislature has put into place regarding personal signage. It is very embarrassing to have an officer show up at your home to remind you the practice of placing personal signage on county owned sign poles and Centerpoint owned streetlights is not allowed.

On each regularly scheduled collection day, Best Trash will collect residential refuse at the curbside. Trees, shrubs, brush trimmings and fencing must be bundled in lengths no greater than 4 feet with no branch diameter larger than 4 inches and bundles weighing no more than 40 lbs. The bundling is required to allow quick pickup and size limitations are required to avoid damage to the compacting equipment. Heavy/bulky items (appliances, furniture, carpet up to 1 room rolled up 4 ft. wide and weighing less than 50 lbs) will be picked up either collection day. By Federal Law, refrigerators, freezers or any other item containing Freon must have the Freon drained and have an accompanying bill to validate such service was performed. Items excluded from normal collection are dirt, rocks, bricks, tires, cement, batteries, motor or cooking oil, waste generated from a private contractor or any items deemed to be hazardous materials. Best Trash will leave a tag explaining the reasons for non-collection of the item. An enhanced feature of the new provider will allow for collection of items excluded by the contract if notified in advance. Best Trash will meet with the customer prior to collection day to determine a price to haul the non-contract items. If a resident does not notify Best Trash of such a special pick-up before its scheduled day, Best Trash will leave a notice for the resident to contact Best Trash during normal business hours before the next scheduled pick up day. Please do not dispose of gasoline, motor or cooking oil, paints or any other liquid item in a container that is not visible to Best Trash personnel. If not visible and results in spillage that causes a stain, Best Trash will not be responsible for clean-up.

their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

CFISD culinary students had an impressive display at the Greater Houston Area Cupcake Battle, sponsored by the Hospitality Educators Association of Texas and held last November at Pasadena Rayburn High School. The students swept first through third places and took home two other superlatives at the event, which featured approximately 140 entries from high school students in greater Houston. Cy-Fair High School senior Kaylen Gonzalez won first place for her “Reese’s Cupcake,” followed by Cy-Fair senior Phillip Morado in second place for his “Triple Chocolate Pistachio Cupcake.” Cypress Ridge High School senior Nancy Lopez placed third for her “Mocha Cupcake.” Cypress Woods High School sophomore Shelby Richey won the award in the Best Cake category for “The Turtle Cupcake” and Cypress Springs High School senior Ajee Hayes won the award in the Most Elaborate Technique category for her “Peach Cobbler Cupcake.” “Congratulations to the CFISD culinary students, who took five of the eight awards. It is a remarkable achievement to have their cupcakes chosen from the approximately 140 entries,” said career and technical education coordinator Mark Williams. “These students and their teachers worked diligently and their hard work paid off.”

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year!
