November 2011 Birdies for the Brave golf tournament Supporting Wounded Veterans and Their Families For the fourth straight year the Katy Community is privileged to host the Birdies for the Brave Golf Tournament at Meadowbrook Farms and the Gala at Safari Texas. The Gala will be Saturday evening, Nov. 5th and the golf tournament is Sunday, Nov. 6th. All proceeds go to a variety of charities that serve veterans and their families. There are many opportunities for Katy residents and businesses to contribute and participate in the many inspiring activities of the event. New Trash Receptacles The HOA is adding or replacing trash receptacles in some of our community parks. The locations are Rose Sage, Crestford Park Lane, Dillon Creek/Madrone Meadow, Necklace Tree Lane, Gaston Pool Park and the Central Park Pavilions.
Vandalism Unfortunately, this summer has been one of the worst summers we have had for our neighborhood in being plagued with graffiti. For example, Central Park playground has had over 30 tags (gang symbols) and other graffiti on it. You might not think much of this - but
please remember every time a new gang symbol is put on our play grounds we have to call to have someone come and remove the paint. It really adds up at a couple hundred dollars a pop and this is money we could use somewhere else to improve our community. The HOA is asking you to be our eyes and ears. If you see destruction happening please call the FB Sheriff department non-emergency number 281-341-4666 and take a picture of the vandals. Then please call the clubhouse to report the incident.
Recycle Program The recycle program has been met with great participation. The collection amount has increased from 1 to 1 1/2 loads a week to 5-6 loads every other. Service days will be 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. This is a change from the previous schedule of weekly. On your collection day, please set the cart at the curbside (within 5 ft. of the roadway/ curb) by 7 AM. It will then be emptied by an Automated Side-Load Truck. Wheel-side of cart should face your home and the cart opening toward the street. For more information on the recycle program go to our website, www.sevenmeadowslive.com.
Neighborhood Watch Team
If you plan to go on vacation, it is important to prepare your home before you head out the door. • Hold mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor pick it up for you. One of the telltale signs of “nobody is home” is a pile of newspapers on your sidewalk. • Tell a neighbor when you are going to be gone and give them a contact number in case they need to reach you. • Complete a vacation watch form online with the Ft. Bend County Sheriff at www.co.fort-bend.tx.us/vacationForm.asp or by calling the dispatcher at 281-341-4666.
Be Thankful, Happy Thanksgiving! 1

• For a full list of vacation preparation tips, go to www.sevenmeadowslive.com, sign in and go to the Neighborhood Watch Team Group site and download the document under vacation tips. Be a good neighbor – if you notice that your neighbor may be out of town and has not done all of above, take the initiative and make sure their newspapers are picked up and take a walk around and make sure things are secure. Neighbors watching neighbors is the key component of Neighborhood Watch. Do you know your neighbors? Do you know who your block captain is? One of the goals of the NW Team is to create a community where you know your neighbor. Neighbors watching their neighbors’ homes makes a safer place to live. Getting to know your neighbors makes a community where people enjoy living. Block parties are another way to get a group of neighbors together. They don’t have to be limited to once a year. The NW Team meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7 PM and the following Friday at 10 AM at the clubhouse. The Team hopes that by providing both a night time and a day time meeting that more block captains and residents will attend the meetings. Seven Meadows Patrol Officer Jake Medve and Ft. Bend County Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Gerard Argao are usually there to answer any questions and make a report. All residents are welcome. The NW Team sends out alerts when there is suspicious activity or crime in the area. It helps us stay informed and alert. To find out how you can get involved, go to the website www. sevenmeadowslive.com or email Lorraine Rabuse, membership coordinator, at lrabuse@entouch.net.

Is your house safe? Do you wonder if your house is safe from robbers? Crime Prevention Officer, Gerard Argao, offers a free service to inspect your home - inside and out - and give you tips and if qualified, a certificate that can give you a discount on your home insurance. For more information, contact Officer Gerard at 281-594-0801 or argaoger@co.fort-bend.tx.us.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanks giving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held.

Novemberr 2011
• President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER • Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Award winning theatre troupe Studio VII from Seven Lakes High School captured more awards this past spring and summer. The Tommy Tune Awards nominated the school for numerous categories and won the top spot for Best Scenic Design and Best Supporting Actress, as Carley Nunn took the prize. Studio VII has rapidly risen to the top as one of the most successful programs in the state of Texas. The International Thespian Convention is held every year in Lincoln, Nebraska and 2011 witnessed the first ever winners from Seven Lakes High School as Abby Emery and Jane Weber conquered the world with their work in Stage Management and Theatre Marketing. These awards display the true dedication and prowess that the troupe has to offer. Winning at the International Thespian Convention is the highest competitive award that a high school thespian can earn. The competition is fierce and only one winner per category is selected. Congratulations go to the whole troupe and especially these individual students

KEYS Mentoring One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process
Students Continue the Tradition of Strong Performance on AP Exams Katy ISD’s tradition of increasing student participation and strong performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams continues as the district recently learned that each one of its six high school campuses showed an increase in the number of students participating in the exams. In addition, every high school campus exceeded the state and national percentage of AP students making a qualifying score of 3 or better on the exams.

Katy ISD is among the 388 U.S. public school districts (one of only 23 in Texas) to be listed on the 2011 College Board AP Achievement List. This list identifies districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses while maintaining or improving the rate of students earning a score of 3 or better on the exams – the score that generally qualifies a student for college credit. In May 2011, more than 3,000 Katy ISD students took more than 7,200 AP exams, with 79 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better. This reflects a 24 percent increase from 2010 in the number of exams earning these high scores. Advanced Placement and PreAP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. Katy ISD recognizes that support and encouragement from the campus, the teacher, and parents are critical to student success. Therefore, the district follows an inclusive enrollment model for AP and PreAP courses that provides support systems for student success. Katy ISD offers AP courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, computer science and languages other than English. For more information about AP or PreAP, visit www.katyisd.org/gt.

Fort Bend House of Hope - Bringing Healing and Restoration to Hurting Teens and Their Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. For more information regarding our organization, check out our website at www.houseofhope-fortbend.org, or contact Janeen Smith at 832764-1123, houseofhopefortbend@comcast.net.

Tips for “Black Friday”
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and is known as the busiest shopping day of the year. The name comes from an accounting term - red ink means a negative profit margin; black ink means a positive profit. Check out these tips on maximizing Black Friday:

1. Check Out the Ads: Your local Thanksgiving Day newspaper will be packed with ads, coupons, and circulars. This will be your number one source to local Black Friday savings and it will also help you organize your day to maximize savings. 2. Do Your Research Before Friday: If you are hoping to scoop up a deal on Friday on a big-ticket item, get your research out of the way asap. Being knowledgeable about the products you want to buy will help you avoid being sucker-punched with loud advertising for poor products. 3. Compare Prices: Utilize price-comparison Internet shopping sites to assist you in comparing product prices. Compare the “options” included with the product. Some retailers will lowball the advertised price on a stripped down product and then you will be charged extra for the necessary parts. 4. Early Bird Shopper Discounts: The Early Bird Shopper is the real winner on Black Friday. Stores offering Early Day Shopper Specials, but with no “rain checks”, which means once they run out of the products, you are out of luck. 5. Night Owl Discounts - Thanksgiving Eve: Internet shoppers can beat the Early Birds by shopping online in the pre-dawn hours of Black Friday. Many retailers will be posting their Black Friday specials, which can be ordered, online and picked-up at your local store. Special “Web Only” deals will also be available starting as early as Thanksgiving eve. 6. Bring the Ads: Many stores offer a “lowest-price” guarantee; be sure to bring a copy of the exact product being advertised for less. 7. Know the Store Policies: Knowing the store policies on returns can help you determine where to buy. Many retailers are including restocking fees and shorter return deadlines. Almost all of the major retail chains require receipts for returns and exchanges and many keep a database of individuals who abuse return policies. 8. Gift Receipts: Gift receipts generally include a description of the item purchased but do not disclose the price paid. Including a gift-receipt should help insure a hassle-free return experience for gift recipients. 9. Cash is King: Enough said.

Slow Cookers are a Cook’s Best Friend By The Paula Deen Test Kitchen
More leisure time and a homemade meal? Save money on groceries, use less electricity, and enjoy better flavor? You bet! And with a slow cooker, you don’t even have to be there while your dinner cooks. With the invention of the original Crock-Pot® in the 1970s, we’ve been able to layer ingredients in our slow cookers, leave the house for work or play, and come home, hours later, to an inviting aroma-filled house and evening meal. Rival still manufactures the Crock-Pot®, but many other manufacturers are in the game with competitive models. The “crockpot” moniker has become an icon for any slow cooker. These days, choices are not limited to 2-temperature manual units; they also come programmable, with multiple time and temperature settings, countdown timers, built-in thermometers, and automatic temperature shifts to warm in case you are late getting home. There are slow cooker sizes and settings to fit your family’s individual needs. Though shape is not necessarily a deal breaker when purchasing, it is a consideration. A money-saving attribute of slow cooking is that tougher, less expensive meats are rendered meltingly tender and juicy. Larger roasts and whole chickens fit better into an ovalshaped model and will cook more evenly, although you can trim them to fit into a round one. It’s easy to adapt your favorite oven or stovetop recipes to slow cooker cooking. Regardless of yield, if your dish normally cooks in 15 to 30 minutes, you can count on 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours cooking in a slow cooker on High power or 4 to 6 hours on Low. If it takes 35 to 45 minutes, you should allow 2 to 3 hours on High power or 6 to 8 hours on Low. Main dishes like roasts and stews that cook up to 3 hours will take 4 to 5 hours on High or more than 8 hours on Low. For instance, Sweet Merlot Beef Stew should cook in about 4 hours on High or 8 to 10 hours on low; after you brown the meat, add everything to the slow cooker for the total cooking time, including the onions and mushrooms. *To eliminate excess fat, remove skin from poultry and trim excess fat from meats before cooking. Pre-brown meats, and drain before adding to the crockpot, especially ground meats. *Brown chops and roasts to caramelize the outsides for richer flavor and attractive appearance. For Low Country Smothered Pork Chops, prepare the chops as directed and layer in the cooker with the strips of green pepper, onion, garlic, half of the broth, and Worcestershire. Add more broth as needed to thin the gravy. *Vegetables, especially roots like potatoes, rutabagas, and carrots, cook more slowly than meats, so cut pieces uniformly and add them at the beginning. (It can take 8 to 10 hours on Low for a “baked” potato to cook until tender!) Italian Chicken and Vegetable Soup is a perfect example; just put all the ingredients into the slow cooker, reserving half a can of broth to add at the end of cooking, if necessary. Let it cook 2 to 2 1/2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low. *Most stews, soups, and other braised dishes require less liquid. If you end up with too much, pour it into a saucepan and reduce it until flavorful and thickened. If you need more liquid, it can be added at the end of the cooking time. *Cheese, milk, cream, and other dairy: Add dairy products close to the end of cooking.
*Spices tend to loose their power during long, slow cooking; be ready to re-season towards the end.

*Most slow cooker liners are removable, allowing you to fill it up to a day before cooking. Remove the stone liner and assemble the casserole in it; cover and refrigerate until you are ready to cook. You can prepare Chicken and Rice Casserole ahead and cook it 1 1/2 to 2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low or until it is hot, stirring in cheese during the last hour of cooking.

If you or your family member has a non-life-threatening injury or illness, such as an ear infection, cold, fever, cut, bruise, sprain, or even a broken bone, we’re here to see you seven days a week, offering the convenience of a walk-in clinic with the expertise of an emergency room. The center offers in-house X-ray, lab and EKG services to our patients. Our goal is to get patients in and out within an hour.
