REMINDER FROM THE SHEFFIELD BOARD
PEASE NOTE: An ACC application must be submitted and approved prior to you adding shrubs or fencing in the front of your property. Please see the HOA guidelines regarding fencing requirements to ensure that fencing additions meet guidelines and that you submit your plans and application for approval PRIOR to doing any modifications. The ACC application form can be downloaded from the Crest Management website at www.crest-management.com, please select Communities at the top of the page and then select Sheffield. The ACC application will be located at the bottom of the page. The applications should be submitted to Crest Management as indicated on the form. Please, remember Sheffield HOA does not manage your trash service. This service is through Langham Creek MUD (water bill) 281-579-4500. If you have any questions regarding the new service, please refer back to the insert that was included in your water bill or contact WCA at 281-368-8397 or the MUD. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Sincerely, Your Sheffield Board
MORE GARBAGE/RECYCLING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
A lot of residents are confused over the new garbage pickup with WCA. WCA has answered questions posed to them by the HOA Board. Here are the responses: 1. When does heavy trash day start? It began Tuesday July 7th and will occur every other week. August dates will be the 4th and 18th. 2. What makes up bulk/excess trash? Bulk refers to items that cannot be placed in the blue trash barrel, bundled or bagged. This may be furniture, appliances, large toys, etc. Excess is considered bundled (branches), bagged grass that won’t fit in the cart or other household material that may be bagged. Bulk and excess trash items will be picked up on heavy trash days. 3. Will WCA pickup electronic items like televisions and monitors? WCA encourages recycling of any item first. Check with local electronic retailers for their programs or drop off sites. TV’s and monitors are a concern in trash pickup due to the high risk of tube implosion and glass shards. Non-CRT equipment is not a handling issue. If a CRT nothing bigger that 23 inches, if non-CRT (say an LED TV), 50 inches maximum. 4. Will WCA recycle aluminum foil? Only clean foil is acceptable, dirty or oily foil should be put in with regular trash. 5. Will you recycle plastics if there is no 1-7 code in triangle symbol. No code means the item should not be recycled, please dispose of these materials in the household blue trashcan. 6. Will you recycle Styrofoam? No, it is a contaminant in a curbside recycling program. Please dispose in the blue can.

7. Will you recycle plastic films (bags, wrapping, etc.) if they have a 1-7 triangle recycling symbol? No, these are also contaminants and should be placed in with regular trash in the blue can. 8. What about plastic shopping bags? WCA does not recycle plastic bags of any kind. You may take them to your local grocery store if they have a recycling container. 9. Which can is for what? The large blue can is for regular trash, yard debris, other household non-hazardous materials. The smaller gray can is for recycling. Recycled items are noted on the lid of the gray can. 10. What are the pickup days? Blue trash cans will be picked up Tuesday and Friday weekly. Gray recycling cans will be picked up every Friday. Heavy trash day is every other Tuesday (see question 1). 11. Where should I place my can(s) for pickup? Place them wheels to the curb, handle facing toward your house, three feet apart and three feet away from a car, tree, etc. Anything not in the can(s) will not be picked up, except on heavy trash day (see question 1). Have your cans ready for pickup by 7 AM on scheduled collection days. The cans should not be so full that the lid will not close (prevents windblown materials from your cans).
DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS
Do you know what the top three reasons management companies send out deed restriction letters? The first is not keeping your yard mowed and weeded. Mow your yard on a regular basis, keeping it a little higher in the summer months, which helps in water retention and crowding out weeds. The second is leaving your trashcans out in front of the house or garage. Trashcans should be kept out of sight (in the garage, behind the privacy fence or behind shrubs or a purpose built enclosure. Contact Crest Management if you wish to build a trashcan enclosure for Architectural Control forms. The third reason is mildew on the house siding. This often happens on shady areas of the house. Power washing or spraying with a cleaning solution for mildew often takes care of the problem.

Thank you for your cooperation.
LITTER PICKUP
Just a reminder, if you see trash in the neighborhood, please be a good neighbor and pick it up and dispose of it properly. Otherwise, then trash will either end up in someone’s shrubbery or trees or else get washed down the storm sewers, contributing to mosquito breeding and backing up of the storm drains in times of heavy rains. Thanks to those of you who regularly pick up other people’s litter.

A number of Sheffield residents either walk their dogs or let their cats run loose. It is a violation of deed restrictions to let your pet leave their poop on another resident’s lawn or the common grounds (they belong to all of Sheffield’s residents). If your pet does have to go to the bathroom, please be courteous and carry a plastic bag (store bags or the newspaper delivery bag are great for this), pick up the pile by placing your hand inside the bag, grab the pile through the bag, tie the bag up and throw it in the garbage. Leaving your pet waste around encourages the possible spread of pet disease, such as Parvo, which can be life threatening, or parasites.

Please request the ACC application for your home improvement or modification. DEED RESTRICTION TRAILERS, RV’S AND BOATS
It is a violation of our deed restrictions to park a trailer, mobile home, RV, boat, 18-wheeler tractor/trailer or camper in your driveway. You can park these on your property only if they are completely out of sight (in the garage, in the back yard behind the house). If you cannot meet these rules, it must be stored offsite (out of the neighborhood). GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY
As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.” • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit www.missingkids.com for even more back to school safety tips.
TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Even safer than riding in your own vehicle, riding on a school bus is the safest way for your child to travel to and from school. The greatest risk is not riding the school bus, but approaching or leaving it, so children need to be especially careful around the school bus “danger zone,” which is the 10 feet in front, behind and on each side of the school bus. What Children Should Be Taught About School Bus Safety • Wait until the driver says it is safe to board. Then get on one at a time. • Once you’re off the school bus, walk five giant steps from the front of the bus, cross in front of the bus when the driver indicates it is safe, stop at the

edge of the bus - look left-right-left again for traffic and if there’s not traffic, cross the street. • Ask the driver for help if you drop something while getting on or off the school bus. • Keep your loose items inside your backpack or book bag. • Once on the school bus, go directly to your seat and sit down facing forward. Remain in your seat facing forward when the school bus is moving. • Be respectful of the school bus driver and always obey his or her instructions. Tips For Parents • If your children ride the school bus, walk with them to the bus stop and wait with them untilthey get on the school bus. • Tell children to use the handrails when they get on and off the school bus and be careful of drawstrings and book bag straps that could get caught in the handrails and doors. • When driving in neighborhoods and school zones, watch out for young people who may be distracted and not thinking about safety. • Slow down, watch for children playing and congregating near school bus stops. • Be alert. Children arriving late for the school bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic. Source: www.nhtsa.gov/parents

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Girl Scouts in Copper Creek Meadows Community have been having a great time at San Jacinto Council’s resident, day and twilight camps! Camp is a wonderful place to meet new friends and share Girl Scout traditions. Sailing at Camp Casa Mare, canoeing and swimming at Camp Agnes Arnold and horseback riding at Camp Misty Meadows are only some of the camp experiences girls in our Council can enjoy. “I can’t wait to get back” was one comment from a first time camper. Many of the day and twilight camps this year had a “safari” theme and might have included survival skills, archery, swimming, a cookout and maybe even a sleepover! Camp wouldn’t be camp without songs, crafts and games and special snacks like s’mores and banana boats! Soon it will be time for us to start anew Girl Scout year and also to welcome new Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place- and we have been doing it for over 100 years! Many things have changed since 1912 - Girl Scouts today are more

likely to be building robots than ironing hair ribbons! - but our core values are strong and enduring. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 17 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scout programs are geared to their particular age levels and interests. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls! Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Older girls whose schedules do not allow for participation in a troop or group may still want to participate as “Juliettes” (individual Girl Scouts). We have many special interest groups for activities such as backpacking, archery, horseback riding and sailing. Our Council also has several choirs and a dance group, the Green Starlettes. San Jacinto Council also offers special programs and events and so does Area 4 (the portion of the Council, which includes Copper Creek Meadows Community). Please be on the lookout for information on Girl Scout Rally nights (when we recruit new leaders and form new troops) and registration at area schools. The San Jacinto Council website should also have information. We are ALWAYS looking for adults to be troop leaders and volunteers. You don’t have to be Superwoman or Ranger Rick - you don’t even have to have children! You do have to be interested in working with girls, pass a background check and go through some training. Lots more training is available, but you only need a little to get started. We also need people with skills and special interests who might be willing to share them with your young neighbors. Sometimes we just need people who are willing to be there and decorate the cafeteria, hand out programs, make popcorn or measure the standing broad jump! We’d love to talk to you about volunteering!
Prices start at $35 depending on lot size. Call for details. Expires August 31, 2015

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
Please join us for our fellowship meal the first Sunday of the month following our morning worship service!

REMAINING 2015 Season EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy. 2015 • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center. Season subscriptions packages are now available for purchase for the 20142015 season. Season subscriptions offer incentives and discounts to new and returning patrons for every performance and packages start as low as $100. Patrons can purchase their subscriptions online at www.houstonfac. coM or call the HFAC box office at 281-685-6374.

LOCAL MENTORS NEEDED TO MENTOR ONE CHILD & CHANGE TWO LIVES!
CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.
MISSION CY-FAIR
The Cy-Fair community has a new non-profit organization named Mission Cy-Fair. You can learn more about us at www.missioncyfair.org. We are currently needing volunteers to work with our after school apartment ministry serving the children of The Lake and Timberwalk apartments located at 5650 Timbercreek Place Drive. If you are interested, we’d love to talk with you more. Please contact carmen.donaldson@missioncyfair.org.
SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.

LOVING ARMS PET PACEMENT ANIMAL FOSTERS NEEDED
Summer is here, children are out of school. What better time to get involved with a rescue group and help a dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an animal is all about. Fostering is an important step in the transition from
32
shelter/street to “happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement is a fosterbased rescue for dogs and cats and is always in need of foster families. While fostering can be challenging, knowing you helped an animal when it most needed shelter and security and helped it find its forever home will give you endless joy. Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in what capacity you can help. Can your home only accommodate small animals or can you foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and kittens or only mature animals? Can you take more than one animal at once? Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement. com or visit us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.

Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting. Lucy in the sky with diamonds! Tiny senior female short hair tuxedo cat needs a home after her human mom recently died. Lucy is 13 years old and still loves to play with string and cat toys. Lucy’s coat is super soft and she likes tummy rubs, sleeping with her humans and lots of love. Lucy would do well in a quiet household and she would love to be the only pet so she gets lots of playtime and attention! She is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and spayed. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
