HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Every year on 4th of July, many Katy residents will celebrate this day watching a fireworks display. The City of Katy display will be hosting fireworks at the Katy Mills Mall parking lot and Cinco Ranch will have their fireworks display at LaCenterra. Please note that if do decide to enjoy them in our community, please remember to keep safety in mind for yourself and your neighbors. • First of all, do check and abide by the Unincorporated Harris County’s regulations on ban status and the noise or nuisance ordinance for their enforcement or any fines that can be imposed on these subjects. • Be considerate and courteous to your neighbors, especially during the late night hours when it can cause an inconvenience to others sleep. • Clean up any debris or waste from your party or activities. • Watch your children and instruct them to practice safety while crossing the street or joining in the fireworks activities.

LAWN CARE TIPS

During the late summer, the heat will slow the St. Augustine’s grass growth. It may also require more watering especially during a drought spell. To prevent water loss, try to water your lawn deeply weekly to encourage deeper roots. It is best to water your lawns in the early morning or during the early evening hours to prevent water evaporation. Keep an eye out for Grey Leaf Spot fungus which occurs from late night-time watering or Chinch bugs infestations that tend to show up during the summer’s heat and can damage lawns. Ask your landscaper or home improvement store for ways to control these situations if they arise.

• Protect yourself by using loose fitting clothes, applying sunscreen, wearing a hat or sunglasses. • Keep cool and well-hydrated by drinking plenty of liquids, about 6 to 8 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes. • When working outdoors, take a break from the sun to cool down. • As a reminder always be prepared for the Hurricane Season, June 1st thru November 30th.

SOCIAL BUZZ

As the new Board of Directors begins meeting with the social committee, we would like to hear from the community on which events to present to them. We would like your input on what kind of activities our homeowners would like to see taking place in our community. Please email your suggestions to stonecrestnews@ yahoo.com or the association manager for the News and Activities Committee. Include any specific ideas, activities or age groups that would attend these events.

ARE YOU PICKING UP AFTER YOUR PET?

Be a responsible pet owner in our community. It is important to remember to immediately clean up after your pet when walking your dog. Besides being unsightly and frustrating to others residents who have to clean their yard, animal waste can be hazardous to the health of our children who play in the community and to other pets. Fecal matter is one of the most common forms of disease transmission between dogs. Be sure to take a baggie with you to pick up any waste and then dispose of it properly. Also, when walking your dog in our community, remember that it must be leashed. Cat Owners; please keep your cats from wandering in other resident’s yards by keeping them in your home or on your property. Thank you for your cooperation!

SUMMER HEAT SAFETY

Take precautions and protect yourself from the sun rays’ exposure during the hottest hours from 10 AM to 4 PM.

FOURTH OF JULY TRIVIA

• The Declaration of Independence begins with the words “When in the course of human events.” • The Constitution is the legal framework of the United States. • Francis Scott Key wrote the words of the Star Spangled Banner. • The Liberty Bell acquired a crack on its very first ring. • The first United States flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes. • In 1942 Congress recognized the Pledge of Allegiance. • The first national capitol was located in Carpenters Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • The anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is July 4, 1776. • The Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

4

July 2015

• The official anniversary date of Flag Day is June 14th. • The first person to sign the Declaration of Independence was John Hancock. • Historians believe Betsy Ross sewed the first official American flag. • The oldest commissioned U.S. naval vessel is named ‘The Constitution.’ • The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are familiarly known as ‘The Bill of Rights.’ • John Hancock’s signature is largest on the Declaration of Independence. • The signing of the Declaration of Independence took until August 2, 1776. • The Statue of Liberty is 151 feet tall.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
