STONE CREST HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
Stone Crest Residents, now that the transition is complete and the community has been entrusted to its homeowners. The Homeowners Association Volunteers will begin to oversee its functions. The Board Members first goal is to build a stronger community by increasing communications and listening to its homeowners. They ask all homeowners to attend the scheduled meetings, abide by the governing documents and pay their assessments on time. We need more involvement from our members to volunteer and offer input about in our community. Please continue to refer any questions or concerns about our community to our association manager Heather Gilbert from High Sierra Management. Don’t forget to join us & become a committee volunteer.
HOMEOWNERS’ ORIENTATION CLASSES
Join us as we begin the first of many Homeowner Orientation Classes that will begin very soon. We will review the Community’s Deeds & Restrictions. We will also offer tips in maintaining the home’s exterior appearance and keeping up your home’s yard maintenance according to our governing documents. This will give everyone an opportunity to meet their neighbors, learn about the importance of abiding by the governing documents and to voice any concerns about community. We hope that you can join us & look forward to seeing you there!

OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS
Just a reminder that September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. So many women are not aware of this third deadly disease! 20,000 women will die this year. Some of the symptoms to be aware of are changes in appetite, feeling full and bloated after eating even if just a small amounts. A Feeling of pressure in lower back, needing to urinate more often, changes in bowel habits, increased abdominal girth or clothes that fit tighter around waist. You may have a feeling of being tired or low energy. Be aware of how your body feels and notice changes that persist for several weeks can help your decision to see a doctor. Many signs such as bloating may suggest a symptom of Ovarian Cancer even though people think it is a gastrointestinal. Talk to your Doctor about concerns and testing for Ovarian Cancer. 80 percent of women die from this disease and 20 percent will last 5 years or longer. Let’s stop this from happening by listening to your body and getting checkups. You can go on the internet and look up more information such as National Ovarian Cancer Alliance. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM
As our community flourishes so does crime, so a few of our neighbors have stepped up to establish our Neighborhood Watch Program. As you may have noticed there will be some retail centers along I-10 and along Katy-Ft. Bend. The startup meeting was held in July and they are looking for more volunteers to be a part of this program. We need to have 60% participation to become apart of the Harris County’s Sherriff program. They will come to our meetings to speak to the community and bring us a wealth of resources. Please show us that you want to do your part in keeping our community safe and join us.
COMMUNITY SAFETY TIPS TO FOLLOW
• Be observant and report any suspicious activity. • Turn on your front porch lights; Keep shrubs trimmed to avoid someone from hiding. • Keep vehicle windows closed & doors locked whenever possible. • Keep garage doors closed when not in use to prevent an intruder’s access to your home. • Ask a neighbor to watch your home or use the Harris County Sheriff’s Vacation Watch Program.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if

the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH SEPTEMBER 15TH - OCTOBER 15TH
Each year, from September 15 to October 15 , the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the economic, cultural and social contributions of the more than 44.3 million Latinos residing in the U.S. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month were selected to include the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile and to incorporate October 12th, Día de la Raza, a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America to observe the colonization, exploration and multicultural heritage of the Americas. th
th
How to celebrate: • Visit a museum or gallery that has a Hispanic Heritage Monthrelated exhibit. You might learn about Hispanic artists, musicians or scientists who contributed to Hispanic culture around the world. • Go to your neighborhood bookstore or library to hear a lecture about Hispanic history. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about any one of the 21 countries represented by Hispanic society. • Attend a Hispanic dance performance or a Latin music concert. Take in the rhythm of the music or watch dancers move to the Latin beat. Or take dance lessons yourself, such as a salsa-dancing lesson. Ask ahead to find out whether or not you will need a partner for the class. • Watch a film in Spanish (with or without subtitles), see a play or musical related to a Hispanic tradition or see a performance put on by Hispanic Americans. If you don’t speak Spanish, learning a few words could open up a whole new world to you. • Volunteer for a Hispanic-related club such as a Mexican cooking club, Spanish literature group or Puerto Rican singles club. Begin writing for a publication written in Spanish or teach ESL. Whatever you choose, get involved in your community as a way to celebrate Hispanic heritage.
GRANDPARENTS DAY SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH
This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents. • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Parents, churches, schools and senior organizations, help children to adopt a grandparent!

MAINSTAGE SEASON - 2015 All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mac Wellman’s Dracula: By Mac Wellman, Directed by Jennifer Decker. Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely re-vamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004. theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history. October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.
