Take Precautions Against Crime during Holidays

The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents:

Happy Holidays! December 2012

• Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check

the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.

HOW TO USE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SAFELY

• Keep Christmas lights stored in a covered box, wrapped neatly around a plastic light organizer or just loosely wrapped, untangled. • Check each and every light for broken or non-functioning bulbs. Discard lights that don’t work and replace with new bulbs. • Make sure cords and wiring are intact. Avoid frayed cords - discard immediately if frayed. • Know that there are separate lights for indoor and outdoor use. Use indoor lights inside your home and UL-approved outdoor lights outside. • Turn off all Christmas lights when you go to bed. • Use mini, low-voltage lights on a tree. The large lights generate too much heat and can dry out your tree faster, making it a fire hazard.

Get Into the Christmas Spirit

Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus.

Hanukkah

In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.

HAPPY Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES

The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior.

“Congratulations to the CFISD culinary students, who took five of the eight awards. It is a remarkable achievement to have their cupcakes chosen from the approximately 140 entries,” said career and technical education coordinator Mark Williams. “These students and their teachers worked diligently and their hard work paid off.”

The student winners will be recognized during a public book signing on Saturday, December 1st at the Houston Public Library Downtown - Central (500 McKinney Street). Copper Corners Service Unit held an investiture ceremony for our new leaders at the October service unit meeting and celebrated the birthday of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low (October 31st) with a special cake. We know that our new troops are holding investiture ceremonies for their girls and celebrating with families and friends.

Stone Gate

Our fall service project this year was in support of Covenant House’s 22nd Annual Candlelight Vigil and Rally for Homeless Youth. Troops brought their donations of new and gently used clothing, especially coats, jackets and other cold weather gear, to our service unit meeting on November 13th. Thanks to Jerilyn Kortegast for coordinating this project. Our service unit meeting on December 11th will also be a holiday party and “white elephant” exchange. All leaders and interested parents are invited to attend. Events in the planning stage for later in the year are Daisy Day, Brownie Day and “Me and My Guy.” We are also working on an event for our older girls. We know lots of our troops attended the B.I.G. event, but so far we only have a picture of troop 16239. This “cover girl” troop picture also included Cadette Erin B. and Senior Juliette Kristina B. They certainly look as if they had a great day! January 11th – 13th is our Leader/Daughter weekend, when our leaders spend some special time with their OWN daughters! We’ll be back in the hill country and looking forward to crafts, campfire sing-alongs and the dutch oven cobbler cook-off, along with the always hilarious talent show. Hiking, horseback riding and a climbing wall may also be on the agenda for some of our group. We’ll hope it is warm enough to play in the river, but whatever the weather, we know we’ll have a great time! Shopping in Wimberley on the way home makes a great weekend even better! There are rumors that some of our leaders and daughters actually like that part best! Girl Scouting in the United States has been developing girls of courage, confidence and character since 1912. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. If you missed our Rally Nights in September, give us a call. It is never too late to join! Copper Corners Service Unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Please contact Diane Massie at 281-5569148 or Susan Bartos at 281-855-9005. 713-896-9700 2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy Falls High School

Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held: Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease.

The Knights of Columbus Council 8096 of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church invite you to attend our 26th Charity Las Vegas Night.

Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer.

The event will be held on February 18, 2012, from 7:00 PM until 10:30 PM, at the church, 6646 Addicks Satsuma, in the Community Life Center.

Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways.

A prize auction will follow with fabulous items to bid on with the play money you win. Included will be a trip to Las Vegas, hotel stays, restaurant dinners, sports memorabilia, wonderful gift baskets, fantastic coupons and fabulous merchandise.

As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year!

We hope you will join us and promise you a fun-filled evening of Black Jack, Craps, Roulette, Poker, Slot Machines and other games. Snacks and drinks are included in the price. Donations appreciated. Bring your friends and neighbors. Tickets are only $15 per person and all proceeds will benefit local Knights of columbus Charities. For more information, please call Franklin Holub 281463-6122, email holub8096@sbcglobal.net. We sure hope to see you there!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
