PETS

Stone Gate Community has had many loose dogs & cats lately. Please do your part to keep your animals safe and contained on your property. Please Control Your Pets! It is a deed restriction violation if your pets are not confined to a fenced backyard or within your home. They must not be allowed to bark all night or cause a nuisance to your neighbors. They must also be on a leash at all times when not in a contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility to keep ALL areas of the community FREE from pet debris when walking your pets. Please remember that cats must also be confined. Animal Control can be reached at 281-999-3191. If you happen to come across vicious dogs or ANY loose dogs of this nature, please contact your local Animal Control at 281-999-3191. If you are familiar with the property address the pets belong to, please feel free to submit that information to PMG - Mike Crahan M.Crahan@pmghouston.com - to pursue the deed restriction violation. Notification and ample time must be given to the owner to correct the violation prior to any further pursuit by the Association. Remember that all pets should always wear a collar with ID tag! Pet owners should also consider pet microchips for identification in case your pet looses their collar/ID tag. Did you know? There is a Lost Pet Feature to Community Intranet • Log into www.canyongate.com/residents/sg (login required) • Click on “classifieds” under Resources located on left side of menu • Click on “lost & found pets” You personally can create a description of the lost or found pet as well as add photos. Please include your contact information to speed up communications.

Ask us about our new rewards program and learn how you can earn free exams and cash rewards on all pet care expenses!!!

Dear Homeowner: Customer privacy and security have never been more important. We want to give you an update on the gates and cameras and after-hours phone numbers to Top Gun Security. Currently we have over 120 cameras up and running. We fixed the cameras first to determine who was responsible for damaging the gates by pushing them open with their vehicles. Any vehicle caught on camera damaging the gates will be responsible for all damages to the gate and gate opener. We are in the process of replacing all old hydraulic gate openers with new mechanical gate openers. The new mechanical gate openers are stronger, more reliable and are able to handle the weight of the gate.

Have you logged in yet? www.canyongate.com/residents/sg To find a wealth of information regarding your Homeowners Association, please visit the website at www.CanyonGate.com.

We are also installing new call boxes at the same time as we are putting in the new mechanical gate openers. You may see some street boring or cutting of the concrete to lay new lines for the system.

On this community website you will find the following and much more… • Rules, Regulations (CC&R’S) & Guidelines

Below we have provided after-hours contact numbers for you to report any suspicious activity. You may share this information with other homeowners.

LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE!

Take responsibility for yourself & be a good neighbor! Keep our streets & neighborhood trash & litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor & do your part! If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home, including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting.

Stone Gate

• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure.

year olds. St. Cuthbert School is now offering a Bridge to Kindergarten class for the 2016-2017 school year. Our bridge program is designed for children who are not quite ready for kindergarten. We recognize the need to engage children with summer or fall birthdays who are five years old, entering Kindergarten or First grade the following school year, however still need a bit more time before entering a rigorous learning environment. The development of the essential building blocks allows children to succeed at learning with greater ease and confidence; by helping them bridge the academic and social gaps necessary to be positive and productive classroom leaders. Our school hours are Monday-Thursday 9 AM-2 PM and Friday 9 AM-12 noon. The program provides a loving, Christian environment offering the children weekly chapel, as well as music/movement, library and computer classes. Our curriculum includes Handwriting Without Tears, reading and math. The program is open to all children, regardless of race, nationality or faith. St. Cuthbert School is NAEYC accredited. For questions or more information, contact Lynda or Dana at 281-463-1912 or visit our web site st.cuthbert.org. St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road at Queenston.

Congratulations to the first graduating Senior Class at Covenant Academy. College acceptances to date include Texas A&M, University of Alabama Honors School of Engineering, Texas State University, Houston Baptist University, Belhaven University, Auburn University, Sam Houston State, LeTourneau University, Stephen F Austin State University. We are so proud of each of you! National Archery Champion visits Covenant Academy. Seventh grade students recently learned how to shoot arrows like a master archer… or rather a High Elf of Lothlorien. Having recently finished reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the students celebrated their accomplishment with a feast in CA’s wooded Preserve. Much like the Fellowship prepared to feast with the elves as a farewell to Lorien, CA’s fellowship of learners paused to celebrate their journey together as they look forward to reading the next great book. Because the elves are great archers, Covenant Academy invited James Loesch, winner of 14 national titles, to attend as master instructor and honorary Elf. Loesch and Houston Archery Lessons gave each student a lesson in how to shoot. Students also dressed in costume and shared a meal.

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY - GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL

Copper Creek Meadows Community held a “Cookie Kickoff” for the Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the “Lemonade” cookie and enjoyed “frosted lemonade.” We also learned fun facts about Girl Scout cookies, played games and did other activities to help develop skills such as goal planning and financial responsibility. The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale began on Dec. 19th and continues through March. Sales of Girl Scout Cookies provide funds for individual troop activities and help to support our Council camps and a variety of programs. Proceeds from the Cookie sale help to feed and shoe the horses, maintain the sailboats and canoes and buy archery equipment. We greatly appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors! Thank you!

Our Leader/Daughter holiday craft event was a lot of fun for those who attended. Thanks to all who assisted with the event! Our Spring Leader/Daughter event is coming up in April. This is always a popular event, with camping, shopping and all kinds of activities. In the past, activities have included riding, rock climbing, talent show and Dutch Oven Cook-off. Can’t wait to find out what is on the schedule this year. Our World Thinking Day event is coming up in February, when we celebrate our membership in the international Scouting movement and learn about other countries. Last year, we had some very creative booths, decorations and swaps and we can’t wait to see what our troops will be doing this year! Second year Brownie Troop 16150 volunteered to decorate a float for the Great Pyrenees Rescue Group at the Brenham Christmas parade. The girls also made jingle sticks and walked with the group in the parade. These busy Brownies also joined with other Copper Creek Meadows troops who made cards, letters and drawings for soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Troops from our community also joined in creating ornaments for the Girl Scout Christmas tree at the Museum of Natural Science. This year’s theme was “Back to Nature.” Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. Older girls whose schedules may not allow for participation in a troop may join as “Juliettes” (individually registered girls). Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome! Our elementary schools are Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. For more information, please contact Marlo Folwell 713-854-9426 (marlo.folwell@c-a-m.com). You can also contact Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council at 713-292-0300 or check the website at www.gssjc.org.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH

St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will hold their 15th annual Chili Cook-Off and Chili Bowl on Saturday, January 30th, from 12-2 PM. This event is open to the public. Come and sample our chilies and place your vote for your favorite and see if it becomes the grand prize winner. Then join the team for a fun game of football right on our front lawn. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. You are invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on February 10th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service is designed for children and their families. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter.
