We are in the process of replacing all old hydraulic gate openers with new mechanical gate openers. The new mechanical gate openers are stronger, more reliable and are able to handle the weight of the gate. We are also installing new call boxes at the same time as we are putting in the new mechanical gate openers. You may see some street boring or cutting of the concrete to lay new lines for the system.

A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN KINDERGARTENERS ENJOY UMBRELLA PARADE Kindergarteners at Cypress Christian School learned about short vowel sounds. They enjoyed learning through hands-on activities and special projects to complement their curriculum. They also enjoyed a very special Umbrella Parade to celebrate the letter “u.” All four Kindergarten classes paraded through the elementary hallways and out onto the playground with their umbrellas high in the air. As they marched, they made the short “u” sound. Learning phonics is fun!

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
Copper Creek Meadows Community invited troops at all levels to send representatives to our first Girl Planning Board meeting for the year. Girls were asked to present their ideas for events they would like to see held by our Community. They had lots of great ideas! Thank you to all the girls who attended for their suggestions. Girl planning is an important aspect of Girl Scouting and one that began with our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, back in 1912. Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday was on October 31st and many troops celebrate that day with a birthday party or other special event in her honor. A Brownie Try-it dance workshop was hosted by two Cadette Girl Scouts from troop 14289 in October. The Cadettes are members of the Girl Scout Green Starlettes dance and drill team. They held the event as part of their Silver Award project. They will be purchasing new toys for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. Troop 113017 attended the Compassion Experience at Copperfield Church. Using iPod and head sets, the girls were able to participate in an interactive journey through the daily lives of children in the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Uganda and India This helped them to experience other cultures and better understand the impact of poverty in the developing world. The junior “Flowers” badge workshop held at the LSCLone Star College in October attracted area Girl Scouts to learn more about this subject. Brownie Girl Scouts will have their chance at the “Brownie Bugs” Badge workshop scheduled in November. Troop 113046 enjoyed a visit to Dewberry Farms and a climbing web, among other activities. Junior troop 16468 completed their award project to prime and paint the recycling barrels at Birkes Elementary and presented the finished barrels to their principal. They would like to thank Home Depot for the donation of paint. These busy Girl Scouts are now working on learning to cut out and sew, for their NEXT project! Leaders and their daughters will be able to have a special time together at our Leader/Daughter event in December, This event will be local, but we are planning a return to Wimberley in the spring! Many thanks to all who helped to make our fall product sale a success! We really appreciate the support of our friends, family and neighbors! If you missed our Rally Nights, it is never too late to become a Girl Scout! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. You can check out the Council website at www.gssjc.org. You can also contact the Copper Creek Meadows registrar at ccmregistrar@gmail.com.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 61
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Boy Scout Troop 61 meets from 7:00 to 8:00 PM every Wednesday in the Activity Room at Peace Community Church. Contact Mike Viator with Troop 61 if your son is interested in joining a local Boy Scout Troop. Cell: 713-4091934, mike.viator@comcast.net.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 - October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.
