SYDNEY HARBOUR HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

February 2016 What is the Board member’s job like? Simply stated, the Sydney Harbour Homeowners Association is a $600,000 non-profit corporation, so the Board members’ job includes all the usual tasks of running a company. The Board is responsible for maintaining the common areas (pool, landscaping, lakes), for communicating with the residents, for collecting dues and for enforcing its rules. The Board is helped by its management contractor, PMG and by multiple volunteer committees.

JANUARY YARD OF THE MONTH

The Sydney Harbour Yard of the Month for January 2016 is 17855 Camp Cove Dr. owned by Ms. Maura McCartney. Thank you Maura for making Sydney Harbour a beautiful neighborhood for all of us to enjoy.

Should I Be a HOA Board Member? Two HOA Board members’ terms expire in March 2016. Neither Board member seeks reelection. Two residents need to accept the challenge to run the neighborhood as a Board member.

I’m already busy; I don’t have time. We’re all busy. It would be nice if there was a long list of qualified volunteers waiting to step into the Board position. Unfortunately, the Nominating Committee has looked since 2014 and not found anyone. The Board job is for 2 years. Are you that busy that you cannot dedicate some time to maintain your neighborhood? What could happen if I don’t step up to be a Board member? 1. Neighborhood quality could decline. When the Board does not take care of its business, Sydney Harbour deteriorates in a few months. Grass is not cut, pool does not open, fountains stop. For each of us, our homes are our biggest investments. If the neighborhood loses appeal, then we all lose. 2. HOA dues will increase. With diligence, costs can be managed. There is no reason that dues should rise. But, it’s easy to spend someone else’s money. Without good Board members, you will pay more. 3. HOA could interfere more in your life. The Board could harshly enforce the deed restriction covenants. No one likes violation letters in their mail. What grounds do you have to complain, if you won’t be a Board member? If the duty is shared, then everybody wins. Each of us brings unique skills and experience that can contribute to an effective Board. So if we start a tradition of rotating the Board member duty throughout the neighborhood, the benefits are realized by all and the burden is spread among us equitably.

This is a problem within Sydney Harbour that seems to be escalating. When you walk your dog (day or night), please bring your bag and pick up his/her waste. If you don’t want to pick it up, keep your pet in your own yard. BE CONSIDERATE - it makes Sydney Harbour look unkempt and your neighbors don’t like stepping in it, smelling it or mowing over it. Thank you to all Sydney Harbour residents.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE

DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today! Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.

LITERACY ADVANCE OF HOUSTON IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

Literacy Advance is Houston’s largest and oldest 100% volunteer-supported literacy organization - and we need your help! We’re calling all passionate volunteers to help adults learn to read, write and speak English. All classes are free because they are taught by caring people just like you willing to volunteer a few hours a week. We’d love to match you with a person in need. Ola read her first book at age 49, thanks to a tutor just like you. Prior teaching experience is welcome but not necessary. Training and ongoing support is provided and we have locations across the city. Other volunteer opportunities are available as well, to find out more please contact Maxine Stefano, Volunteer Manager, at tutor@literacyadvance.org or at 713-2668777 ext.16.

START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!

Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to large dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from. We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible. Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted, please know that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home. Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement. com or visit us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.
