Obelisks dating from early in European settlement outline Obelisk Bay. These were erected primarily as navigational aids, although in the case of ‘Obelisk Bay’ and its beach, place names are derived from these important markers. North Head has an obelisk dating back to 1807; Bradley’s Head rejoices in a sandstone column moved from the Sydney General Post Office in 1871 while Middle Head has 1850’s obelisks at Obelisk Beach and on Laings Point. Some pictorial examples are shown below.

About 100 metres in length, Obelisk Beach is off the beaten path looking out into Obelisk Bay. Little known among tourists, this beach gets low traffic and tends to be quiet and tranquil. Officially sanctioned as a clothing optional beach, it is not uncommon to find bathers and beach-goers completely free of swimwear. Quiet, respectful and friendly people who enjoy an open and accepting setting frequent the beach.

This is a committee so the work will be shared. If you are interested in joining the pool committee, please send your name to Shannon Abernathy, at s.abernathy@pmghouston.com.

HOW TO DEAL WITH FROZEN PIPES

• Disconnect and drain garden hoses. • Cover outside faucets with insulating foam covers. • Turn off water to outside faucets, if available and open valves on faucets to allow them to drain. • Turn off sprinkler system and blow compressed air through the lines to drain them. • Close or cover foundation vents under house and windows to basements. • Close garage doors. • Insulate exposed pipes (both hot and cold) under house with foam pipe insulation. • Open cabinet doors under sinks. • Drip hot and cold faucets in kitchen and bath. Drip single control faucets with lever set in middle. • Set icemaker to make ice if the water line to it runs under the house. • Don’t forget to check on pipes to your washing machine in the laundry room • Locate water main cut-off valve and have a cut-off key handy. • Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, electric heat tape or a portable space heater to thaw frozen pipes that have not burst. • Keep the faucet open when thawing frozen pipes to allow water to begin flowing through it. • After the weather has warmed above freezing and any frozen pipes have thawed, turn off dripping faucets and monitor your water meter to check for unseen leaks.

TRASH COLLECTION

Remember, recycling pick up is every Monday and trash collection is Mondays and Thursdays. Please remember trash receptacles and recycling bins may be placed curbside no sooner than 8:00 PM the night before service and must be stored out of public view the same day.

26321 NORTHWEST FRWY #100 STREET LIGHT OUTAGE

Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying.

CYPRESS, 77429

• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

HOW TO REUSE, RECYCLE AND GREEN YOUR AFTER CHRISTMAS WASTE

Want to get a P.H.D. in what to do with your P.H.W.? (That’s short for postholiday waste in case you didn’t know.) While you may not have heard of the term (we kind of just made it up), we’re pretty sure you know what we’re talking about – the crumpled wads of gift wrap, the withering tree, that sweater from Aunt Mabel that was so ugly that it made a baby cry. worry if you’ve experienced any of these symptoms, however – P.H.W isn’t contagious, and there’s a quick cure – read on to check out our 5 easy tips for what to do with all that stuff after Christmas! 1. HAVE A SWAP PARTY You may not be in love with the fringed, mesh muscle shirt that one of your over-zealous co-workers gave you, but someone else might go gaga over it! Planning a swap party is simple – just invite a few favorite friends to bring over their unwanted gifts, serve some yummy snacks and beverages, and let the trading begin! For an added dose of excitement, play the classic giftswitching game White Elephant. 2. RE-GIFT The idea that re-gifting is taboo is so 2011! If you’ve got a gift that you know someone else will enjoy more than you will, why not give it to them? Better yet, start a ‘gift drawer’ to collect new beautiful items that you can see being perfect for future birthdays, housewarmings, etc. 3. DONATE UNWANTED PRESENTS The most generous way to discard of unwanted toys, clothes and electronics after the holidays is also the easiest. Donate to local shelters, charities or Goodwill. Dropping items off on the way to do errands is a cinch and in many cases, pickups can be arranged free of charge. 4. RECYCLE OLD ELECTRONICS Before you trash your old TV, mp3 player or computer to make way for your newly acquired goodies, consider how dangerous e-waste is for the environment and for human beings. Check out the EPA’s page (www.epa. gov/recycle) on how to find e-cycling locations to dispose of your electronics safely and maybe even get you a discount on some new ones! 5. RECYCLE GIFT WRAP AND YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE This one’s a no-brainer but it still rings true. Saving and reusing your gift wrap as well as recycling your tree are simple steps you can take towards battling P.H.W. (http://www.chron.com/life/gardening/article/Where-to-recycle-yourChristmas-tree-1752972.php) Source: http://inhabitat.com/what-to-do-with-all-that-stuff-after-christmas/

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH

St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will hold their 15th annual Chili Cook-Off and Chili Bowl on Saturday, January 30th, from 12-2 PM. This event is open to the public. Come and sample our chilies and place your vote for your favorite and see if it becomes the grand prize winner. Then join the team for a fun game of football right on our front lawn. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. You are invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on February 10th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service
