PARENTS’ DAY
Kids, don’t forget that July 26th is Parents’ Day! Make sure to let your parents know how much you appreciate them and maybe you could do something special that day to help out. Some ideas are: make a card telling them why you think they are such wonderful parents, clean your room without being told, help clean the table after dinner (if you are old enough, make dinner), help watch your younger siblings so mom and dad can get a break.
SUMMER TIME ENERGY-SAVING TIPS
These tips are designed to help you choose effective ways to reduce your energy bills. Some measures may not be relevant depending on climate, the age of your home and appliances and past improvements made to your home. Fast and Free The average home spends hundreds of dollars a year on energy costs. But you can lower your energy bills and help save the environment at the same time! Be a speedy chef • Nothing is more energy efficient for cooking than your microwave. It uses two-thirds less energy than your stove. Push a button to wash your dishes • Surprise! Your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand. Then let dishes air-dry to save even more! Fill up the fridge • Having lots of food in your fridge keeps it from warming up too fast when the door is open. So your fridge doesn’t have to work as hard to stay cool. Cutting back unnecessary energy use is an easy way to reduce energy consumption while saving money. Here are some additional suggestions you can do at home, at absolutely no cost to you. Turn up your thermostat Set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you are home and 85 degrees or off when you are away. Using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room. Always take into account health considerations and be sure to drink plenty of fluids in warm weather. (Save: 1 - 3 percent per degree, for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees)

10920 Fry Rd, Ste. 200 • Cypress, TX 77433 • Hablamos Espańol Use your appliances wisely To help prevent electricity outages, avoid running your appliances during peak hours, from 4 PM to 6 PM or anytime an electricity emergency is declared. • Do your laundry efficiently by using the warm or cold water setting for washing your clothes. Always use cold water to rinse clothes. (Save: 4 percent) • Line dry clothes whenever you can. When you need to use the dryer, run full loads, use the moisture-sensing setting and clean the clothes dryer lint trap after each use. • Conserve energy by running your dishwasher only when it is fully loaded and turn off the dry cycle and air-dry dishes instead. Operating swimming pool filters and cleaning sweeps efficiently • Reduce the operating time of your pool filter and automatic cleaning sweep to four to five hours and only during off-peak time. Eliminate wasted energy • Turn off appliances, lights and equipment when not in use (save: 2%). • Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they aren’t in use-most new electronics use electricity even when switched “off.” Turn computers and printers off at the power strip. • Unplug and recycle that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don’t really need it. Inexpensive Energy Solutions Make a quick trip to your local hardware store to purchase inexpensive energy-saving toos and equipment. Replace air conditioner filters Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause the system to run longer, increasing energy use. Replace filters monthly for maximum benefit.
ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent bulbs. For example, install compact fluorescent bulbs or LED bulbs in your porch light if you leave it on overnight. • Buy ENERGY STAR® certified torchieres. • Install an ENERGY STAR® programmable thermostat (save: 1 - 3 percent). Good Energy Saving Investments Planning to do some remodeling soon? Time to replace old appliances? Consider these energy efficiency suggestions when you make purchases. Install a whole house fan A whole house fan is permanently installed in your attic and draws cool air into your home through the windows while forcing hot air out through your attic vents. Use after sundown when the outside temperature drops below 80 degrees and in the early morning to cool your house and help reduce your air conditioning use. Install window shading Install patio covers, awnings and solar window screens to shade your home from the sun. For additional future savings, use strategically planted trees, shrubs and vines to shade your home. Solar control window films applied to existing glass in windows and doors is an effective method to reduce peak demand during hot months and conserve energy anytime air conditioning might be required. In addition to the energy management benefits, the use of these films can also reduce exposure to ultraviolet radiation and reduce glare. Visit the International Window Film Association for more information. Invest in a new air-conditioning unit If your air conditioner is on the way out, buy an ENERGY STAR® air conditioner (save: up to 10 percent).
Plug your home’s leaks Weather-strip, seal and caulk leaky doors and windows and install foam gaskets behind outlet covers.
Seal your ducts Leaking ductwork accounts for 25 percent of cooling costs in an average home, so have your ducts tested and have any leaks or restrictions repaired by a qualified contractor. Note: duct cleaning is not the same as duct sealing. As of October 1, 2005, if you install a new central air conditioner or furnace, your ducts will have to be inspected.
Choose ENERGY STAR® products • Buy ENERGY STAR® certified table lamps and light fixtures and replace your incandescent light bulbs that are used more than two hours per day with
Replace your refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR® model Refrigerators with a top or bottom freezer design can save you an additional 2-3% on your bill compared to a side-by-side design.

STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.
FOURTH OF JULY TRIVIA
• The Declaration of Independence begins with the words “When in the course of human events.” • The Constitution is the legal framework of the United States. • Francis Scott Key wrote the words of the Star Spangled Banner. • The Liberty Bell acquired a crack on its very first ring. • The first United States flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes. • In 1942 Congress recognized the Pledge of Allegiance. • The first national capitol was located in Carpenters Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • The anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is July 4, 1776. • The Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • The official anniversary date of Flag Day is June 14th. • The first person to sign the Declaration of Independence was John Hancock. • Historians believe Betsy Ross sewed the first official American flag. • The oldest commissioned U.S. naval vessel is named ‘The Constitution.’ • The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are familiarly known as ‘The Bill of Rights.’ • John Hancock’s signature is largest on the Declaration of Independence. • The signing of the Declaration of Independence took until August 2, 1776. • The Statue of Liberty is 151 feet tall.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

CY-WOODS SENIOR HONORED WITH SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD
Cypress Woods High School senior Erica Ogwumike was one of two high school athletes in the greater Houston area to be selected as the KUBE Channel 57/Xfinity Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ogwumike, a girls’ basketball player for the Lady Wildcats, was honored along with Katy High School football player John Michael Robertson in a segment taped by High School Sports Zone Live host Todd Freed on June 4th at the Toyota Center.
Junior pitcher Tyler Bielamowicz picked up the victory for the Mustangs in game three, tossing a complete-game shutout for the series-deciding win.
Both Ogwumike and Robertson were awarded with a $2,000 check from Xfinity.
Bielamowicz said the team’s never-give-up attitude led to the come-frombehind win.
Ogwumike, who will play for Pepperdine University in the fall, said she is proud of the academic and athletic recognition.

CORNERSTONE UMC LAUNCHES SUMMER SHOE DRIVE!
Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by Monday-Thursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. By donating shoes to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives. For more information or questions about the shoe drive, please contact Scott Grow at youth@cornerstoneumc.org or contact the church office at 281-859-4141.
