BEING THANKFUL

HOW BEING THANKFUL LEADS TO SELF IMPROVEMENT This year, as we approach Thanksgiving here in the United States, I cannot help but be reminded how many people are out there who are taking personal stock of their situation and are unable to really feel like they have a whole lot to enjoy and be thankful for. While some of us will be spending time and energy with our family and speaking with them about the things that we are thankful for, there will also be those out there who either won’t celebrate, or even those who have stopped caring. These people have allowed negative energy into their lives and all they can focus on is how they lost their jobs and how they hate their lives. Always Think Positive! CHANGING TO POSITIVE THINKING How can we get out of this harmful and negative mind set? Take a moment and think about the one thing that each and every morning you can be thankful for. What on earth could that be? The very fact that you are alive this very moment and able to take the time to read this article is proof of one reason to be thankful! Positive thinking is the art of taking a bad moment, a bad day and finding the one tiny shred of joy in it and magnifying it so that it consumes your entire being. This will lift your spirits and help you to stop saying things like “I hate my life” and “I can’t do anything right”. Thoughts like this can only perpetuate the lie, that you are incapable. You are an amazing creature, a human being, a thinking creative individual who has the freedom to be whatever it is that you desire to be, provided that you can maintain a positive attitude about the situation, and give thanks when necessary. Henry Ford once said “No matter if you think that you can or think that you cannot, you are correct”. What does this statement say to you? You are the master of your own destiny, my friend. Will you embrace positive thinking ; stop saying things like “I hate my life” and start on the path to selfimprovement by deciding that today you can do whatever it is that you set out to do? If the answer to this is yes, then you have just taken the first step on an amazing journey that will serve to better your life, outlook, and yes even your relationships and income. When we think of the idea of being thankful in conjunction with a positive attitude and self-improvement, we are getting to the very root of human compassion. We can be thankful for so much, and yet not have a true attitude of thanks. What comprises the “attitude of thanks”? It is related to the attitude of mindfulness, of being present in the moment and not the past or worrying over the future. When you begin being present in there here and now, you notice things “the song of a bird, the smile on your child’s face and your heart swells. Silently you become thankful for the experiences that you are blessed with. In Conclusion, Don’t Say “I Hate My Life!” As this thanksgiving comes around this year, take time out to learn how to cultivate an attitude of thanks and on Thanksgiving this year, give your honest effort into remembering all that you have, no matter if you have lost your job, or that that you hate your life. Take this step for you. Becoming a more positive person intent on self-improvement will help you to beat any depression or anxiety that may turn up this holiday season.

FoundationsAcademy.com An Exercise for Self Improvement Let’s try an exercise. You will need: • A notebook • A pen (not a pencil, we want what you write to be written for good) • About 10 mins each morning and evening 1. Write on the first page “My Journal of Thanks” 2. Under that, on the same page write an intention statement, something to the effect of “ This journal is for my exploration of the things I have to be thankful for in my life so that I may begin on the path of self-improvement and positive thinking” 3. After that write a commitment statement “ I, (your name here) will write in this journal Twice a day (or however often you feel that you can commit to) for 6 months (or however long a time period you feel you can commit to) 4. Last but not least, write todays date and sign your commitment statement. On the second page 1. Make a list of three things that you are thankful for that day in a numbered list. 2. Write a short paragraph about how these things enhance your life. 3. After this is done (it shouldn’t take long) go about your day and when things get rough, take a moment and think over these three things and how they make you feel. Think about the thanks you feel for them. 4. Before bed that night, below your first paragraph write a second one about how remembering these things helped you (or not) throughout your day. NEIGHBORLY REMINDER

This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!

STREET LIGHT OUTAGE

Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease

organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

VETERANS DAY HEROES GOLF TOURNAMENT

Vets Journey Home Texas Inc. is pleased to announce it will be hosting the 1st Annual Military Heroes Charity Golf Tournament this Veterans Day, November 11, 2013! The tournament will take place at one of Houston’s premiere golf facilities, The Club at Falcon Point located in Katy, Texas. We invite you to “take the time” to thank a veteran for their service on this nationally recognized day which recognizes all veterans, living and deceased. The community is invited to participate in the Veterans Day golf tournament. All proceeds will support Vets Journey Home Texas Inc., which is a 501(c) (3) whose mission is to provide healing, hope, honor and homecoming for veterans in need and their families, through education and self-discovery. The program, which was recently recognized at the White House in Washington, DC, allows veterans to meet during a “Closed Retreat” that starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday afternoon. “Proceeds from this tournament will benefit the program which is offered at no cost to veterans,” says Sam Luna, founder of Vets Journey Home Texas Inc. The program benefits veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) but any veteran that applies is accepted. Recently after receiving the Medal of Honor, Ty Carter, called on Americans to “take the time to learn about the invisible wounds. Know that a soldier or veteran, suffering from post-traumatic stress, is one of the most passionate, dedicated men or women you will ever meet. Know that they are not damaged. They are simply burdened with living when others did not. Know that they, we, are not defeated - are never defeated. We are resilient and will emerge stronger over time.”

Volunteer Opportunities CYPRESS ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to

ADOPT A US SOLDIER

Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

MISSION CY-FAIR

The Cy-Fair community has a new non-profit organization named Mission Cy-Fair. You can learn more about us at www.missioncyfair.org.
