First Annual Chris Saiz Charity Golf Tournament Deemed a Huge Success Thanks to Community Support If the success of the First Annual Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, held recently at the River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy, is any indication of the community support of the young foundation, it is off to a great start. With over $50,000 raised, the mission of awarding scholarships to local students with dreams of continuing their education after graduating from high school, but are in need of some financial assistance, can be accomplished. George Anthony, of Copperfield Ward of the Katy Stake, volunteered along with 220 fellow Mormons, sorting and packaging over 36,000 meals, for the Houston Food Bank.

Second Annual Katy Stake Day of Service Helps Houston Food Bank Katy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent a recent Saturday helping to feed the hungry at the Houston Food Bank. This is the second year the local church members have set aside a day to do some good in the community. In October 2011, Katy Latter-day Saints joined with other Mormons worldwide in local community service projects, ranging from tying quilts to cleaning a cemetery. Community service tends to feel good, so Mormons in Katy decided to set up a special day each fall for serving in the community together. This year’s project, on Saturday, October 13th, was packing meal boxes at the Houston Food Bank. About 220 Katy church members drove to the Houston Food Bank facility. In just a few hours they sorted and packed 28,503 meals for adults, plus another 6,240 pounds of rice and beans, which were repackaged to be used for 8,543 meals for youth. It was a good day’s work of feeding the hungry.

Last May, shortly after the foundation was formed, in honor of Chris Saiz, a much-loved Cinco Ranch High School junior, who passed away as a result of a tragic car accident, three local area students received scholarship funds to Magda & Michael Saiz assist with their college expenses. Saiz was a star basketball player and high achieving student who had dreams of playing basketball in college and achieving his academic goals. In addition to the 150 golfers that attended the event, several Katyarea businesses stepped up to contribute to the tournament. Which Wich provided a delicious box lunch, Mission Burrito was on hand with snacks, Orange Leaf Yogurt donated refreshing frozen yogurt and Stadia Sports Grill served a sit down meal for the golfers to enjoy during the evening program. Golfers and guests were also wined and dined compliments of Ferdie Dupuis of Frank’s International and refreshments sponsored by Global Data Systems and Ooh La La Dessert Boutique.

National POW/MIA Day – There are still families waiting! Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 remembered all Prisoner‘s of War and those who remain Missing In Action on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in honor of national POW/MIA day. Commander David Brasell led the opening remarks recognizing four local residents: Bart Robinson, Ray Essig, Richard (Marianne) Russell and David Walker. Former Prisoner of War Ray Essig, Marianne Russell, the wife of Richard Russell who is currently still considered Missing In Action and former Prisoner of War David Walker were in attendance. We gathered in freedom for those that have made significant sacrifices for the freedom of our nation. Included in the opening remarks, were prayers for a dearly departed comrade and former POW Bud Fuga, former resident of Katy. Bud Fuga, World War II, was a navigator on a B17 and was shot down in January of 1945. He remained a POW until liberated by the Russian forces at the end of the war. Bud went to his eternal resting place in 2011 and will never be forgotten. Bart Robinson, World War II veteran, Pacific Theater, was captured on the Island of Java in April of 1942 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW of the Japanese. Bart was held as a POW for 3 ½ years, while at the same time his brother was also being held as a POW.

Ray Essig, World War II, 42nd Rainbow Division, was an infantryman with the Rainbow Division, also captured in January 1945 and was held as a POW for the balance of the war on the Russian front. At the end, he was released by the Germans. He was released on foot and walked to the American lines, the best he could, in advance of the oncoming Russian Army. Ray Essig has documented his POW experience, “Observations of a Pawn, World War II.” A copy is kept in the library of the Veterans Memorial Museum in Katy, Texas. Ray Essig returned home, married and raised a family. Ray Essig’s sacrifices are also documented in the World War II combat history publication, “The Story of the Rainbow” which is dedicated to the soldiers of the 42nd Rainbow Division. Richard Russell, Vietnam War, remains missing in action. He was a navigator on a C 130 aircraft that was shot down north of Saigon in An Loc province in 1972. Six were on the plane and only four have been accounted for. Within the last two months, Marianne Russell, the spouse of Richard Russell, received word that the U.S. government has suspended its search efforts at the known crash site for her husband. Marianne joined the VFW members for its annual POW/MIA and emotionally shared how important it is to “let people know there’s still families waiting and when you have someone affected it means more.” We need to bring the soldiers home to bury on American soil. Marianne and their four year old daughter were living in Taiwan when Richard Russell’s plane was shot down. She wanted to stay in Taiwan for news, but the government ordered her to leave the next day. David Walker became one of 63 hostages held at the American Embassy, Tehran, Iran during President Carter’s administration. He was released January 1980 and assigned to the 2nd Battalion Marines in Okinawa. After many assignments in Hawaii and Oklahoma, he was deployed to Desert Storm and retired in 1994. In 2001, David Walker’s status was changed from “hostage status” to POW status by the U.S. government. David Walker experiences are difficult for words. Imagine being blindfolded, put in front of a firing squad, hearing the click of the weapon and constantly having someone standing over you with automatic weapons day after day. Imagine a P38 being held to your head because the Iranians wanted information, for instance, combinations to the safe upstairs at the U.S. Embassy. Soldiers are trained to only provide their name and rank. During his time in Iran, Walker would rarely leave the Embassy and when they did a translator would accompany them. David Walker, the son of a minister, became a deacon and he continues to find salvation the more he studies God’s word.

Help Our Security Guards Help You!

We have chosen to have 24 hour security in our neighborhoods because we want to be safe. With a little help from all of the residents, we can make our security even better! 1. Every resident needs to have a clicker in every car to open the gate. If you do not have one, please contact Crest Management to find out about getting one. Contact Liz with Crest Management at 281579-0761. If you choose not to have a clicker, you will be stopped at the gate and the guard will have to check you in the same way they would check a guest in. 2. Do not open the gate from across the road. When the gate opens, cars waiting in line can simply drive in the gate. The guard has no way of stopping them.

3. If you are expecting someone to come to your house, you might want to think about calling the gate and letting the guard know. This helps to expedite things. For example, if you order a pizza, either call the guard to let them know it is okay to let the pizza delivery person in or at the very least, answer your phone if the guard calls. In the future, anyone who does not receive permission to enter the neighborhoods will not be allowed through the gate. 4. Update your lists for the guards of everyone who is allowed access to your property without a phone call. If the person is not on your list and the guard cannot contact you, they will be turned away.

Police Holiday Safety Tips & Holiday Shopping Tips 1) Do not leave purchased items visible in the car-leave them in the trunk. 2) While shopping in the evening hours may be less crowded, there are also additional potential risks involved. Park in areas of parking lots that have adequate lighting. Consider shopping with someone rather than going alone. 3) Make sure purses and wallets are secure on your person and you are aware of their location at all times. 4) Keep the amount of available cash you have at a minimum or separate it into different pockets or locations on or about your person. This way all of it is not lost if your purse or wallet is misplaced or stolen. 5) Credit cards offer convenience and security, however, keep track of all cards and keep receipts to compare to your monthly statement. 6) Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and move to and from your vehicle with confidence and “purpose.” Have keys ready before getting to your car so you do not have to search for them while standing near it. 7) Report suspicious people or activity to law enforcement immediately! 8) Most important is to reduce your own vulnerability and do what you can to minimize the possibility that you could be a victim of a crime or accidental loss.

Home Safety Tips While Away 1) Valuable items, such as televisions, stereos and computers should be inscribed with an identifying number unique to its owner (do not use your entire social security number). 2) Create an up-to-date home inventory including make, model, serial numbers, other detailed descriptions and photographs of items of value (including jewelry). This inventory should be kept somewhere safe, out of the house.

December 2012

3) At least two light timers should be set to turn the lights and TV on and off in a logical sequence when away for an extended time period to give the appearance that someone is home. 4) The motion detector or other alarm system (if you have one) should be activated when you leave home. 5) Mail and newspaper deliveries should be stopped or arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up should be made when you are away from home for a period of time. 6) Ask a trusted neighbor to tend the yard and watch your home when you are away or have a trusted friend or relative house sit in your absence. 7) Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave, even if you have an alarm system. by Sergeant Mitchell Hutter

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 1313-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Winterizing Your Home: Preparing Your Home for Winter

(Source: About.com) Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace. • Stock up on air filters and change them monthly. • Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. • Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.

2) Get the Fireplace Ready • Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. • If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. • Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. • Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. • Check the mortar between bricks and tuck-point, if necessary. 3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. • Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. • Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. • Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. • Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. • Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors • Some cities require a smoke detector in every room. • Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. • Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater. • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. • Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years.

8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes • Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. • Drain all garden hoses. • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. • Drain air conditioner pipes and, if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees. 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces • Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. • Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. • Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. • Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. • Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area. 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit • Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. • Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. • Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. • Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. • Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon. Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership. Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.

CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70 TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.” Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM). For more information about the concert, contact Ben Rolens, general manager of facilities at the Leonard E. Merrell Center, at 281-396-2562. Go to www.merrellcenter.org to get your tickets online.
