Recycling Lake Forest, Lake of Buckingham and Best Trash take great pride in their recycling program and efforts. Recycling takes time and effort on both sides. Best Trash will collect papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans and glass that are placed within the provided recycling bin. Please remove caps, liquids and food products from inside the containers. Best Trash will recycle any plastic container which has a number (1-7) printed on it within the recycling logo. They DO NOT recycle grocery sacks, newspaper delivery sacks, nor the plastic wrap enclosing 24 packs of water bottles, dog food, etc. They DO NOT recycle light bulbs. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to bin well marked as recycling materials. If you find items left in your bin, it means they are not recyclable. Please dispose of these items in your trash container for the next scheduled pick up. Please only use the recycle bins for recyclable materials, not as an extra trash container.
Lake Forest of Kelliwood Help Our Security Guards Help You! We have chosen to have 24 hour security in our neighborhoods because we want to be safe. With a little help from all of the residents, we can make our security even better! 1. Every resident needs to have a clicker in every car to open the gate. If you do not have one, please contact Crest Management to find out about getting one. Contact Heather with Crest Management at 281-579-0761 ext. 636. If you choose not to have a clicker, you will be stopped at the gate and the guard will have to check you in the same way they would check a guest in.
2. Do not open the gate from across the road. When the gate opens, cars waiting in line can simply drive in the gate. The guard has no way of stopping them. 3. If you are expecting someone to come to your house, you might want to think about calling the gate and letting the guard know. This helps to expedite things. For example, if you order a pizza, either call the guard to let them know it is okay to let the pizza delivery person in or at the very least, answer your phone if the guard calls. In the future, anyone who does not receive permission to enter the neighborhoods will not be allowed through the gate. 4. Update your lists for the guards of everyone who is allowed access to your property without a phone call. If the person is not on your list and the guard cannot contact you, they will be turned away. 5. If you are having a party, please give a list of your guests (preferably in alphabetical order) to the guard on duty. If the guard does not have a list, they will call you for every person who comes to the gate. If you do not answer the phone, the guard has been instructed NOT to let them in. The LF HOA has asked our security company to attend the September Board meeting. Many issues will be discussed with the sole purpose of making our two neighborhoods the safest and most wonderful places to live in Katy. You will be notified of any additional changes to the post orders for our security guards. Thank you for your cooperation! Best Regards, Karen Janczak, CMCA, AMS Crest Management Company 17171 Park Row, Suite 310 Houston, TX 77084 281-579-0761 ext. 612

February 2012
FEBRUARY……DID YOU KNOW? • Birthstone is Amethyst? Characteristic is Sincerity? Flower is Primrose? • Supreme Court of the United States met for the first time on February 1, 1790. • By the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico gave New Mexico and California to the United States on February 2, 1848. • The last German troops surrendered in the Stalingrad pocket, completing the Soviet Union’s victory at Stalingrad, during World War II in February 1943. • Boy Scouts of America incorporated in February 1910. • Thomas A. Edison patented the phonograph on February 19, 1878. • Astronaut John H. Glenn, Jr., became first American to orbit the earth on February 20, 1962. • The United States acquired the Florida territory from Spain on February 22, 1819. • Some important people in history born in February: Charles A. Lindbergh, Aaron Burr, “Babe” Ruth, Ronald Reagan, Charles Dickens, William Henry Harrison, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin, Galileo, Susan B. Anthony, Henry Adams, George Washington and William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. • The following states were admitted as part of the United States: Oregon and Arizona.
GARDENING TIPS FOR FEBRUARY FLOWERS • Plants to set: Alyssum, Calendula, Canterbury Bells, Carnations, Columbine, Cornflower. Daisies, Delphinium, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Lobelia, Nicotiana, Pansy, Petunia, Phlox (Louisiana), Shrimp Plant, Snapdragon, Stock and Verbena. VEGETABLES • Plant beets, broccoli (plants), brussel sprouts (plants), cabbage (plants), carrots, cauliflower (plants), celery, chinese cabbage (plants), chives collards (plants), endive, kale, lettuce (leaf and head), mustard, onions (plants), parsley, garden peas, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, tomato (seeds) and turnips. TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, containergrown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant. • Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. • Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest. • Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

The Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team 624 “CRyptonite” is pleased to report the successful completion of their inaugural FIRST LEGO League (FLL®) robotics tournament. 24 teams from all over the Houston metro area competed in the tournament. FLL teams of six to ten students from 4th to 8th grade work alongside adult mentors to design, build and program autonomous robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® NXT technologies and create an innovative solution to a problem as part of a research project. This year’s competition is the FOOD FACTOR™ Challenge. Can FIRST LEGO League teams improve the quality of food by finding ways to prevent food contamination? The “RoboRangers,” a neighborhood-based team from the Grayson Lakes subdivision of Katy, won the tournament’s First Place Champions Award, given to the team with the highest combined score from all elements of the competition. Made up of 4th and 5th graders and one junior high-aged member, “RoboRangers” was one of the youngest teams in the tournament. Team “CRypton,” from Cinco Ranch Junior High, won the Second Place Champions Award. In addition to the performance of their robot in head-to-head timed competition, other elements the teams are judged on are their research project and presentation, robot design and programming, and FIRST Core Values. As First and Second Place Champions, both the “RoboRangers” and “CRypton” will be moving on to the next phase of FLL competition. Throughout the competition process, FLL robotics teams deal with real-world application of science and math concepts, hands-on problem solving as well as honing research and presentation skills. This Katy qualifying tournament, one of 570 held around the world, was the first step in the regional robotics competition process, which culminates in the Southwest (Texas/New Mexico) FLL Championship Tournament. The winning team from the Southwest Championship participates in the 2011 FLL World Festival.

KEYS Mentoring
One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Global Arm, Inc. and Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) hosted the inaugural Katy Tween Teen Talent Showcase Competition on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Zo-ca-lo Lounge (510 Mason Road). Contestants from Katy ISD and Ft. Bend County ISD entered the competition. Along with their parents, they networked with many recording industry professionals and received valuable advice on career paths, personality, stage presence and business matters. Lunch was provided courtesy of Chick-fil-A (369 South Mason Road). Music industry packages containing valuable information regarding publishing, copyright, promotions and marketing were given to each contestant. Two of the contestants performed original numbers and the others treated the audience to covers by Carrie Underwood, Selena Gomez, Etta James and Jamie Fox. Vocal ability wasn’t the only surprise of the day - two of the contestants performed their numbers by playing the guitar. The 1st place winner of the showcase was Ms. Reagan Douglas, of Katy, TX. Ms. Douglas performed a song she wrote entitled, Till The End (dedicated to Cancer victims), with her guitar; 2nd place winner was Ms. Skyler Sadler (Katy, TX) who performed At Last by Etta James; and the 3rd place winner was Ms. Kaitlyn Wright (Katy, TX) who performed Change by Carrie Underwood. Each winner received a trophy, courtesy of Katy Trophies. 2nd and 3rd place winners received a Chili’s Gift Card, courtesy of Don McGill Toyota. The 1st place winner won a package valued at over $16,000 which consisted of a complimentary studio session at Music World Studios (courtesy of Matthew Knowles), a complimentary photo shoot (courtesy of Jamie LeBlanc Photography), a featured song on Coast 2 Coast Mix tape hosted by Wildman Teddy T (courtesy of Star Quality Entourage) and a featured song on the upcoming film soundtrack starring Snoop Dog (courtesy of Vision World Entertainment).

Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastranglo, Commander, VFW Post 9182, addresses the local boy scouts, veterans and the public. Members share their memories from World War II. Many can be heard from the audience reciting the words from President Roosevelt’s address on December 8, 1941, from memory, as the recording is being played for all in attendance. Others share their memories of military service during World War II and their thoughts about visiting the USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii after the war.
PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED AT VFW Fifteen hundred (1,500) civilians perished on this day, December 7, 1941, known as Pearl Harbor Day, in the premeditated invasion against the United States by the Japanese. There was wide spread fear in the United States, as the US was caught virtually unprepared and paid a horrific price. President Roosevelt addressed the Congress the next day and rallied the American people. Four years later the United States received an unconditional surrender and World War II ended in 1945. World War II stretched from 1940 to 1945. There are 405,399 recorded deaths and 670,846 wounded. Totaling 1,076,845 dead and wounded. Photos taken by Rodney Smith, VFW Photographer
