celebrate the season and generate funds for a worthy cause,” said Brian Haines, YMCA Vice President of Operations. “One hundred percent of proceeds from our event go to help provide Y programs and services to Katy area families. This year, I am proud to announce that the Turkey Dash was able to net over $205,000. Every penny of that money will go back into the community in the form of program scholarships and community outreach subsidies.”
The event was the brainchild of leaders from the Y and The Fellowship wishing to organize a large-scale holiday event to promote community bonding. The race has grown by leaps and bounds over the years to become the area’s premiere fun run. In addition to the running events, participants enjoyed a large post race area which included many local businesses who provided refreshments. There was also a Kids Zone complete with a rock wall, moonwalks, face painting and games. 10K winners were: Overall Male: Max Miller with a time of 34:18, Overall Female: Angela Vega with a time of 41:05, Overall Masters Male: A.J. Terrell with a time of 38:52 and Overall Masters Female: Suzy Seeley with a time of 45:59. 5K awards went to: Overall Male: Nathan Gift with a time of 16:07, Overall Female: Heidi Nielson with a time of 18:20, Overall Masters Male: Stephen Bernard with a time of 18:40 and Overall Masters Female: Anita Deuel with a time of 23:42. For official age category race results, visit ymcaturkeydash.org. To learn more about sponsorships for next year’s event, contact Beth Strand at 281-392-5055 or beths@ymcahouston.org.

CHINESE NEW YEAR FEBRUARY 8 TH! An estimated 1.4 billion people around the world will be celebrating the New Year on February 8, 2016. Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, starts on the night of the second new moon of the winter solstice and ends 15 days later on the night of the full moon. During Chinese New Year, families gather to enjoy delicious foods and to wish each other good luck in the year ahead. Children are often given red envelopes filled with coins, though the money inside is not as important as the color and symbol found on the envelopes, which signifies happiness and good blessings. Each year, the New Year celebration is associated with an astrological animal. 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey, also known as the Fire Monkey. People born in the year of the Monkey are said to be wise, intelligent, confident, charismatic, loyal, inventive and have leadership, according to Your Chinese Astrology. KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES 2016-2017 ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY MODIFICATION
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve an attendance boundary modification (ABM) designed to address the opening of three new campuses and alleviate overcrowding at campuses landlocked with 125 percent capacity. This ABM will provide much-needed relief to Rylander and West Memorial elementary schools, as well as, balance enrollment as the District prepares to open two elementary schools and one junior high next school year. During this entire process, the District welcomed feedback from the community through an online survey. Nearly 9,000 parents, staff and community members completed the survey and dozens shared their feedback during the open forum at various Board meetings. These comments helped shape the ABM and addressed major needs and concerns cited by parents and community. The District presented to the Board a preliminary ABM proposal on November 16th and then an updated option on December 7th to better address the overcrowding at West Memorial Elementary. The Board approved the updated ABM option on December 14th. The District estimates that approximately 3,600 students will be impacted by the approved attendance boundary modifications. Katy ISD will be notifying all impacted families in January/February 2016. For more information about the ABM process, including maps of the approved attendance boundary modifications, visit the District’s ABM webpage.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO SUPPORT TEACHER GRANTS
The Katy ISD Education Foundation is inviting parents, businesses and community members to contribute to its teacher grant initiative by becoming a Foundation Investor or making a onetime donation. The Foundation’s annual Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program awards funds to teachers to implement classroom projects that engage and excite Katy ISD students. Formed in 2013 to support creative classroom programs in Katy ISD schools, the Foundation has awarded more than $500,000 to teachers throughout the district, enriching the learning experience for more than 65,000 Katy ISD students.
Each spring, teachers are invited to apply for a grant through a competitive, three-step evaluation process. Submissions are judged by community volunteers. This year’s grant application process launched in November with teacher grant applications due March 30, 2016. Grants will be awarded in May 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. Foundation Investors pledge annual gifts that range from $1,000 to $50,000 per year. One-time contributions of any amount are also welcome. Additional information about the grant program and how to donate can be found at the Foundation’s website at www.katyisdeducationfoundation.org. Gifts can be made online or by check mailed to Katy ISD Education Foundation, P.O. Box 159, Katy, Texas, 77492-0159. In addition, the Foundation welcomes recurring automated contributions through electronic funds transfer. The Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all gifts are tax deductible. Questions can be sent via email to foundation@katyisd.org.

First Baptist Academy’s Kevin Beck-Perez was selected as the first chair trombone student at this year’s 2015 All-State middle school band competition hosted by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB). Auditions were held on November 7, 2015 at Sealy High School. Students selected to be in the honor band attended an all-day clinic followed by a concert the following Saturday in Bellville, Texas. Seventh grader Beck-Perez, as well as alto saxophone players Matthew Bradberry, 8th grade and Pierce Donalson, 7th grade, chose to participate in the audition which required hours of practice despite their rigorous class and homework schedules in the two weeks prior to the audition. The competition began with blind auditions. Students individually played prepared music that consisted of several scales and excerpts from two music selections for three to four judges in a closed room. Students were scored, ranked and subsequently selected to play in the region band for the following weekend based on their audition performance. The Lakes

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows:
March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mildmannered hero and his invisible friend.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR NATIONAL SYMBOL? BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER
Against Benjamin Franklin’s wishes, the Bald Eagle became our national symbol in 1782 and by 1970, they were nearly extinct. There are several reasons for this. It was legal to hunt eagles for sport and the long-held belief that eagles picked up lambs and children with their talons was another reason to kill the birds. Since the diet of the eagle is mostly fish, eagles were killed to protect fishing grounds. The use of pesticides proved disastrous to the survival of the eagles. The

chemicals collected in the fish that were eaten by the birds. These chemicals severely limited their ability to reproduce and when they did produce, the eggshells were very thin and weak. The chemical DDT was restricted in 1972. When restrictions were put in place and DDT was banned, the eagle population began to rebound. It was removed from the US government’s list of endangered species in 1995 and went from being classified as endangered to threatened. In 2007, it was de-listed and has been assigned a risk level of “Least Concern.” Bald eagles mate for life but recent research suggests there may be an occasional “divorce” and if a mate dies, an eagle will “remarry.” They work together to construct the largest nest of any North American bird, which they return to every year. The work to build the nest is what actually “cements” their bond. Typically the nests are 5 to 6 feet in diameter and 2 to 4 feet wide and since they tend to use the same nest every year, the nest can continue to get a little bigger every year. They prefer to nest in old growth at least 65 feet high, near open water and away from human habitation but have been seen in populated areas. Because the Bald Eagle is our national symbol, it has been given protection by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The Act prohibits anyone, without a permit issued by the Secretary of the Interior, from “taking” bald eagles. Taking is described to include their parts, nests or eggs, molesting or disturbing the birds. The Act provides criminal penalties for persons who “take, possess, sell, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, at any time or any manner, any bald eagle... [or any golden eagle], alive or dead or any part, nest or egg thereof.” In the winter of 1999, a pair of Bald Eagles decided to make The Woodlands their home. Normally staying away from populated areas, these eagles didn’t seem to mind the noise and traffic in the area. The eagles have returned every year and have fledged 22 eaglets. Company in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service developed a habitat conservation plan protecting their nesting area from development. FAST FACTS • The only difference in appearance between the male and the female is that she is bigger. Eagles have an average wingspan of 6 to 8 feet. • Bald Eagles can live up to 35 years of age. Of course there are older Bald Eagles on record. • During courtship eagles will soar into the air, chase each other, fly upside down, lock talons and take death-defying spirals back to the ground. This is done with both potential mates and competitors. Timing is everything! Poor timing can result in death for both birds. • They lay 1 to 3 eggs and incubation takes about 35 days. The eggs hatch a few days apart in the order they were laid. It can take 12-48 hours for them to hatch. • It’s not uncommon for the first-born to kill the smaller one. Parents do not intervene. • 40% of young eagles don’t survive their first flight. • They reach full adult size at 2 months. Eaglets fledge at about 3 months but it takes 4 to 5 years to become an adult. This is when they get their distinctive white plumage. • The site of their first flight is where they will return to nest and raise their young. • Once fledged, the young ones will remain around the nest for up to 9 weeks learning to fly and hunt. The parents will continue to feed them. • Bald Eagles have 7,000 feathers. For those of you interested in observing live Bald Eagles in the nest, go to eagles.org. This is a great way to let your children watch as these parents tend to the eaglets. TWRC Wildlife Center is a 35-year-old 501(C)(3) organization that rehabilitates injured orphaned and displaced wildlife. Admissions average 6,000 animals/year. If you have wildlife questions or would like to explore how you can help, go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or call 713-468-8972.

BEST SUPER BOWL PARTY EVER!! Impress your guests by hosting the best super bowl party this year on February 7th. Here are some FOOD tips that may TRIM the waistline on this traditionally food fest football fun-day: 1. Create a Food Free space: Keeping snacks in another room will help everyone save calories. Plus not having the bowl of chips in front of the TV will curb mindless eating. 2. Low-cal foods first: Instead of bringing out the chicken wings right away, offer lower-calorie foods during the first half of the game, such as a spread of fresh veggies and a lightened-up dip. 3. Give classic recipes a healthy twist: Use nonfat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for dips. Cook Buffalo-marinated chicken tenders instead of chicken wings: you’ll still get that finger-licking yumminess while slashing your intake of saturated fat and sodium. And skip the local pizza delivery; instead, set up stations for everyone to make his/her own healthier and tastier pizza at home. 4. Downsize your dishes. Downsize serving bowls from large to medium. Serve up the tortilla chips in a medium bowl rather than a large one. Same goes for the guacamole: serve that in a small bowl. 5. Be drink aware: choose taller skinny glasses instead of short wide ones. Bigger tip: serve only what your kiddo can enjoy! Courtesy: eatinwell.com

in a relationship. Knowing they can trust you builds a zone of safety and comfort around them. 5. Resolve your differences as soon as they happen. Conflict actually fuels a genuinely passionate partnership. So accept responsibility for your part of the issue at stake and do not blame your partner. 6. Do not criticize. It is ok to complain but not criticize. Your partner is doing the best they can – support them in becoming an even better person. NEVER put your partner down in front of other people. 7. Create a haven for your partner. Make them feel so safe and secure with you that they drop all their defensiveness. Be considerate of your partner’s feelings and treat them with the utmost care and kindness. 8. Let go of the past. All relationships have their difficulties. Remember only the lessons learnt and forget the details. Weather the stormy moments and savor the memory of sunny days. 9. Have a fun date with your partner regularly and often. While once a live bull was included in the procession, now a huge papier-mache’ figure appears. • The five truck parades that follow the krewes of Rex, Argus and Grela on Fat Tuesday feature more than 350 decorated flatbeds with nearly 15,000 costumed maskers aboard.
