British and Expat FamiliEs oF Katy British and Expat Families of Katy enjoyed a very special evening at Willowfork Country Club on Friday, June 8th in celebration of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of The Queen’s reign. Over 120 guests were invited to enjoy traditional British food (Bangers ’n’ Mash and Fish ’n’ chips), a Royal quiz (similar to the typical format of a British pub quiz) and entertainment in the form of a 1970’s/80’s disco by our very own in-house British DJ Evelyn Borthwick. Details are important: Hand-picked British goodies arranged into baskets for raffle prizes, some carefully wrapped and brought back in hand luggage from the UK; home-made gravy cooked by one of our organizers and delivered to the Club earlier that day; Union Jack bunting (decorative flaggarlands) air-mailed to an Expat family in Katy by relatives in the UK and custom-ordered cakes

Congratulations samuel luna, ‘Champion of Change’ Samuel Luna was recognized at the White House on May 24, 2012 for his volunteer services to help fellow veterans. Sam’s award “Vietnam Veterans Champion of Change,” is part of President Obama’s “Winning the Future” initiative (whitehouse. gov/champions). Individuals within the veterans community were honored, especially those who served in Vietnam and have shown continued support for efforts to end veterans homelessness, boost veterans employment, treat problems with substance abuse and develop treatment programs for those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress.

Formerly Lawn Karekeepers, Inc. We have changed our name to better reflect what we have grown to specialize in.

Sam Luna, a Vietnam Veteran, is Founder of Vets’ Journey Home Texas, Inc., which is a non-profit organization that provides a weekend retreats at no cost to veterans and active duty military personnel. The weekend is a safe place where the participants can come to learn about what their war experience did to their body. They learn the role that experience continues to play in their daily lives and in their quest to co-exist peacefully. With the help of trained facilitators, in the sharing of their stories they are safely guided to release emotions. There is also a retreat for veterans and their spouses. Mr. Luna is the Chapter Service Officer for four veteran organizations in the Katy, Texas area where he helps veterans navigate the Veterans Administration to obtain medical care and compensation. With the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9182, Sam also serves on the Color Guard assisting with burial detail. He is the Department of Texas Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and serves on the board of Spaulding for Children, a special needs adoption agency. Sam is a retired Supervising United States Probation Officer. He is often called upon to speak about his work, especially to share his knowledge of Post Traumatic Stress (PTS). Samuel Luna was honored as a White House Vietnam Veteran Champion of Change for his work to educate military veterans about Post Traumatic Stress.

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Layaway plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. KATY ISD ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FOR 2012 - 2013 The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a change in the eligibility requirements for students to receive transportation services. Starting in August 2012, the eligibility for bus transportation will change from the current 3/10 of a mile to approximately 1/2 mile for elementary students and approximately one mile for junior high and high school students. Bus transportation will continue to be provided for students for whom a hazardous condition may exist between home and school, as well as special needs bus routes.

Approximately 52 bus routes (elementary and secondary) will be eliminated, affecting approximately 6,600 students or nearly 21% of the 32,000 students that ride school buses daily. The Katy ISD Transportation Department began building bus routes in June and will have specific routing information available for parents sometime in August. The district will announce specific dates once they become available. The changes are the result of the Transportation Department experiencing particular challenges this year in having a sufficient number of drivers available to meet daily transportation route requirements. Due to vacant routes and driver absences, there have been days in which the department has found it necessary to find drivers to cover up to 46 routes. These changes will allow the district to better meet route driver needs and will provide for more effective route management, including driver training and driver support in issues involving student management. “The change in transportation services comes after extensive review of our current transportation operations that not only revealed a heavy burden for drivers covering multiple routes, but also a high amount of uncertainty and risk due to vacant routes and driver absences,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “In comparison to other school districts, Katy ISD’s transportation eligibility distances remain among the shortest in the Houston area as many districts require students to live outside of a two mile radius.”

They prepared a presentation and were given only five minutes to speak to the committee members, which was comprised of district Superintendents from throughout Texas. Having only a limited amount of time to present their topic, Keith and Dominick focused on some of the highlights about high school bowling. mittee commended Keith and Dominick on making such a great presentation and asked several questions, such as how many students are on each of their bowling teams; which areas currently have the most concentration of high school bowlers; how much are they currently paying for a participation fee and what are there averages, to name just a few. Each committee member was provided with a copy of Keith and Dominick’s presentation along with a brochure from USBC, which discusses a little more about High School bowling. Karen Miller, the Executive Director of the Texas Bowling Centers Association, had also filed a proposal with the Texas U.I.L. to add bowling as a new U.I.L. sport and was also in attendance at the meeting as a representative of the Texas High School Bowling Club. She provided additional information to the Committee in response to some of the questions that were being asked of the youth bowlers. The Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee will reconvene in October and will vote at that time whether or not to pass bowling as a new U.I.L. sport. Let’s hope this will be the year. Fort Bend House oF Hope - Bringing Healing and restoration to Hurting teens and tHeir Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christ-centered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. For more information regarding our organization, check out our website at www.houseofhope-fortbend.org, or contact Janeen Smith at 832-764-1123, houseofhopefortbend@comcast.net.

Become a tutor-understand our student’s liFelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

ruoK program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
