GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

LOCAL JAM SESSIONS

TO FLUSH OR NOT TO FLUSH

Did you know that what gets flushed down a toilet can be costing you money? A recent trend in cleaning products is the catchword “flushable.” But not everything is flushable. Every year municipal districts across the US (and our own) spend thousands of dollars in repairs and lost run time to damage caused by “flushable” wipes. While some wipes are truly flushable, many are not. Toilet paper was designed to disintegrate when flushed; personal wipes and those wipes used for cleaning are designed to hold together. These don’t disintegrate when flushed. Be sure to read the label and only flush wipes that state they are flushable AND can easily tear apart. Wipes that are designed to be strong and hold together well don’t break down in the sewer systems. These get stuck in the pumps and on filtering screens leading to damaged pumps and expensive repairs for the Municipal Utility Districts.

August 2015

The Points

Additional cost by the MUD are passed onto the customers through higher costs. Even some wipes labeled as flushable, really are not flushable. So, if in doubt, throw it out. Check out www.PattyPotty.com.

GREEN TIPS

TACLB650795

Reasons to lose your styrofoam habit - Many of us use styrofoam cups at work or when we get fast food: they’re just so convenient. But if you use one styrofoam cup a day, you’re adding 23 pounds of waste to the landfill every year (and that’s not counting all of those restaurant to-go boxes). Re-using bread bags - Bread bags are quite handy and can take the place of other products that you might buy, so, even though we probably can’t keep them out of the waste stream forever, they can be used for other purposes that may prevent the use/purchase of another product. Here are some ideas: • • • • • • • • • • • •

For packing sandwiches As packing material when shipping goods General storage for small items A replacement for freezer bags Plastic bag crafts (you can use strips to weave rugs or placemats or make “rope”) A cake icing piping bag For picking up dog poop (other small bags can be re-used for this purpose too, like snack/chip bags) Makeshift gloves for touching unpleasant or corrosive things (snack/chip bags good for this, too) Seed starters - put soil in the bottom & use them for seedling starters (also snack/chip bags) Car travel sick bag (also snack/chip bags) Trash bags for small trashcans or for the car (also snack/chip bags) Seasoning bag; add seasoning and meat and shake. Be sure to shake the crumbs out of the bag before storing for reuse!

GLUTEN FREE DIET 101 More and more we are hearing about gluten free diets and gluten sensitivity. But what exactly is this? Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and triticale. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. Gluten is in many foods, even ones that would not be expected. What happens if you have a gluten (or even wheat) sensitivity? Most common symptoms include digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and even constipation. Some symptoms are much more severe and it is important then to seek medical attention and even be tested for Celiac disease. Here are sources of gluten: The Big 3: Wheat, Barley, Rye • Wheat is commonly found in: breads, baked goods, soups, pasta, cereals, sauces, salad dressings, roux • Barley is commonly found in: malt, food coloring, soups, malt vinegar, beer • Rye is commonly found in: rye bread, such as pumpernickel, rye beer, cereals Triticale is a newer grain, specifically grown to have a similar quality as wheat, while being tolerant to a variety of growing conditions like rye. It can potentially be found in: breads, pasta, cereals. The Points

Other common foods that contain gluten: • Pastas: raviolis, dumplings, couscous and gnocchi • Noodles: ramen, udon, soba (made with only a percentage of buckwheat flour) chow mein and egg noodles (Note: rice noodles and mung bean noodles are gluten free) • Breads/Pastries: croissants, pita, naan, bagels, flatbreads, cornbread, potato bread, muffins, donuts, rolls • Crackers: pretzels, goldfish, graham crackers • Baked Goods: cakes, cookies, pie crusts, brownies • Cereal & Granola: corn flakes and rice puffs often contain malt extract/flavoring, granola often made with regular oats, not gluten-free oats • Breakfast Foods: pancakes, waffles, french toast, crepes and biscuits • Breading & Coating Mixes: panko breadcrumbs • Croutons: stuffings, dressings • Sauces & Gravies (many use wheat flour as a thickener) traditional soy sauce, cream sauces made with a roux • Flour tortillas • Beer (unless explicitly gluten-free) and any malt beverages (see “Distilled Beverages and Vinegars” below for more information on alcoholic beverages) • Brewer’s Yeast • Anything else that uses “wheat flour” as an ingredient But what CAN you eat? It is simple: fresh is best. Cutting out gluten from your diet may seem like a difficult and limiting task. Fortunately, there are many healthy and delicious foods that are naturally gluten-free: • Fruits • Vegetables • Meat and poultry

• Fish and seafood • Dairy • Beans, legumes and nuts

*Pure wheat grass and barley grass are gluten-free, but there is gluten in the seeds. If they are not harvested or handled correctly, there is risk of contamination.* Read more at: http://celiac.org/live-gluten-free/glutenfreediet/foodoptions/#SyMcRZxqzDxV0slA.99

1260 Pin Oak Road Suite 208 Katy, Texas 77494 KCCortho.com KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG IMPORTANT DATES August 24th - First Day of School! MESSAGE FOR PARENTS OF KATY ISD 7 TH GRADE STUDENTS Katy ISD has just been alerted by Pearson, the test contractor for STAAR exams, of a reporting error on all 7th grade Confidential Student Reports (CSR) that were sent home. In the STAAR Writing section, there are two scores reported for the writing compositions. One score for the Expository composition and one score for the Personal Narrative composition. The scores are reversed on the report you received. For example, if your child’s CSR shows 10/16 for Expository and 8/16 for Personal Narrative, your child actually scored 8/16 for Expository and 10/16 for Personal Narrative. This error does not impact your child’s overall writing score, Level II: Met Satisfactory standard or Level III: Advanced standard. Accurate CSRs will be sent home in early fall with correct composition scores and will be updated to include the new math standards when they are set. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s Principal.

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy. 2015 • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American.

All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger!
