GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

VACATION PLANS

As summer gets into full swing and vacation plans are made, be sure to let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away. Remember to stop the mail (can be done on-line at https://holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/ or at the post office, 3 day minimum). Either stop newspaper delivery (https:// myaccount.houstonchronicle.com/Login.aspx and log into your account) or arrange for someone to keep them from collecting in front of your house. There no longer is a credit for undelivered newspapers. Our experience is that the newspaper never stopped coming even though we requested a stop, so we just have someone pick up the newspaper. There is a great video online at www.howcast.com/videos/369734How-to-Secure-Your-Home-while-Youre-on-Vacation with some simple tips on securing your home. One simple sug-

gestion you might not think of, is to lock your garage doors from the inside, then unplug the garage door opener. This prevents someone from using a decoder and entering your garage and home.

GREEN TIPS 1. Buy LED light bulbs - Today’s LED bulbs last up to 25 times longer and have really come down in price, with some costing only $8. Due to their long life and efficiency, LED bulbs will easily save you more than $100 over their lifetime. 2. Adjust your TV’s settings (turn Auto Brightness Control on and Quick Start off). Many digital TVs come with a feature called Automatic Brightness Control (ABC), which, if enabled, causes your TV to automatically adjust the screen’s brightness to the room’s light levels. So if you’re watching TV at night in a dimly lit room, the screen doesn’t need to be as bright and your TV will use less power. Also some smart (Internet-connected TVs) come with a Quick Start feature. While the TV will power up a few seconds faster when selected, this feature can be very wasteful because some TVs chug away at more than 20 watts 24/7 rather than 0.3 watts without the feature enabled. So turn this feature off if you can wait the few extra seconds. 3. Wash clothes in cold water and use the fastest spin speed available. Today’s clothes washers and detergents are designed to effectively clean clothes in cold water. This avoids having to heat the 15 or so gallons of water used per load. If you have a front-loading washer, select the machine’s highest spin speed, which will remove more of the moisture from your clothes so you’ll cut dryer time and save money, too. 4. Turn off the Instant-on setting on the Xbox One. This game console is shipped with the Instant On feature enabled, which causes it to continuously use 12.5 watts even when turned off. Selecting the Energy-Saving mode instead can cut your Xbox’s total annual energy use by more than a third.

5. Turn off your furnace when the cold weather ends. Like many other modern appliances, home central heating systems (furnaces) use electricity even when they’re not operating. According to a Home Energy article, many furnaces draw 8 to 12 watts of standby power 24/7 when not in use. To eliminate this waste during the 9-10 months when you don’t need heat, switch off the power to the furnace. 6. Buy a new toilet that uses no more than 1.28 gallons per flush. If you’re remodeling or have an older toilet that uses 1.6 gallons per flush or (worse yet) an older one that might be using 5 gallons per flush, swap it out for a more water-efficient toilet. Look for models with a Water Sense label because they’re efficient & also meet various flushing performance requirements. A family of 4 can save 6 gallons of clean drinking water per DAY, simply by switching from a toilet that uses 1.6 to 1.28 gallons per flush.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY & ICE CREAM MONTH July is National Ice Cream Month and the 3rd Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. In the USA, more ice cream is consumed per head than any other country in the world - such is the love of ice cream among Americans. This is reflected in other ways too, not least by the fact that the USA has its own “National Ice Cream Month.” Since 1984, when President Reagan proclaimed that National Ice Cream Month be celebrated annually, every July has been a focus for greater attention to ice cream in the United States with the 3rd Sunday of that month each year being National Ice Cream Day.

FIREWORK SAFETY

Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day. Yet, the thrill of fireworks can also bring pain. 240 people on average go the emergency room every day with fireworksrelated injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday. Remember, fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burn and eye injuries. You can help us prevent fireworks-related injuries and deaths. How? By working with a national, state or local organization where you live to promote fireworks safety in your community.

Kids, don’t forget that July 26th is Parents’ Day! Make sure to let your parents know how much you appreciate them and maybe you could do something special that day to help out. Some ideas are: make a card telling them why you think they are such wonderful parents, clean your room without being told, help clean the table after dinner (if you are old enough, make dinner), help watch your younger siblings so mom and dad can get a break.

Follow these safety tips when using fireworks: • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks. • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers. • Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don’t realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals. • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks. • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. • Never point or throw fireworks at another person. • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly. • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers. • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire. • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them. www.cpsc.gov/en/Safety-Education/Safety-Education-Centers/Fireworks/

WHY WE CELEBRATE WITH FIREWORKS ON JULY 4 TH

Ever wondered why we set off gorgeous displays of fireworks in our sky each Fourth of July? Apparently, the history of fireworks in America is as old our country itself.

On our first Independence Day celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits. One of our Founding Fathers had even predicted that Americans would commemorate their independence with pomp and circumstance. On July 3, 1776, a day ahead of the Continental Congress’ initial adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Massachusetts delegate John Adams penned a letter to his wife, envisioning the festivities. Fireworks certainly have grown and not only in complexity. The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) estimates that more than 14,000 fireworks displays light up the nation’s sky each Independence Day. PET FRIENDLY 4 TH OF JULY TIPS

HOMEMADE SALAD DRESSING MADE EASY

As we prepare for barbeques and fireworks this Fourth of July, think about how to keep your pets safe and calm during this Independence Day celebration. • It is safer to keep your pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations instead of bringing him/her to your neighbor’s party. • Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he/she can feel comfortable. • Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the rockets’ red glare. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stomach upset. In addition, some certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisins can be toxic. • Human products can be dangerous to animals. Avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent and only use special sunscreen that is intended for animal use. • Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. They can be extremely irritating to the stomach, lungs and central nervous system, if ingested. Article courtesy of www.akc.org/press-center/july-4-tips

On April 25, 2012, Lindsay Laneigh Ferrill’s life was taken in a horrific dating violence incident. Her mother, Shari Nightingale, and Lindsay’s family and friends have met for years in an effort to honor Lindsay’s life by helping others. Thanks to a recent partnership, Lindsay’s Light Fund was developed as a way to better prevent dating violence. Now Lindsay’s story is an important part of the Shield Bearer Dating Violence Prevention curriculum and with your help we are spreading this crucial prevention program to a larger number of high school students. In 2007, Shield Bearer responded to a local high school experiencing a high number of dating violence incidents. Since then the highly effective Dating Violence Prevention Program has been delivered to over 20,000 students in high schools, churches and community centers. The limiting factor has always been funding. HOUSTON GULF COAST CHAPTER OF MDA RECEIVES $224,363 FROM KROGER AFTER SUCCESSFUL SHAMROCK CAMPAIGN The Southwest Division of Kroger will present the Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) with a check for $224,363 resulting from their annual Shamrock campaign. The check presentation took place at the Kroger at 1440 Studemont Street on May 7th. On hand to accept the check was Karla Hoskin, Executive Director at MDA, “We were overwhelmed by the support and effort of Kroger management and employees on this year’s campaign.” Representing Kroger was Joy Partain, Public Affairs Manager, “Kroger’s customers are faithful supporters of MDA year after year and we’re grateful to them and also to our associates. Over the last decade, our customers have donated over $1 million during our annual MDA shamrock campaigns.” The money raised will help fund services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist. Funding will also go towards sending 100 youngsters, ages 6 - 17, to MDA’s annual summer camp, which takes place June 6th - 13th at Camp for All in Burton, Texas. MDA summer camp is a week filled with bonding, growth, acceptance and fun. In addition to knowledgeable camp staff and medical personnel, each camper has his or her own one-on-one volunteer counselor, who helps with all aspects of both fun and personal care. “It’s the best week of the year” said Sydney Horak, a MDA camper.

Host families provide the exchange student with three meals a day and a bedroom (private or shared). A professionally trained Ayusa representative supports each host family, student and local school throughout the program year. Ayusa’s exchange students are 15-18 years old and come from more than 60 countries around the world. All students are fully insured, bring their own spending money and are proficient in English. Interested families can learn more about the program and available exchange students and request additional information by visiting www.ayusa.org or calling 281-770-3414 or email hwells@ayusa.org. The process to apply is simple. Families complete the online application, which includes questions about themselves and local high school, references and a background check. Once the application is submitted, the local Ayusa Community Representative will conduct an in-home interview. They can also help each family with any questions they may have about the application or process. After families are fully approved, they can select the Ayusa student they would like to host.

You always know when an animal has met an untimely and unfortunate death when you see Black Vultures or Turkey Vultures. The Black Vulture has a featherless black-grey head while the Turkey Vulture has a featherless red head. The Black Vulture is also distinguishable by white-tipped wings that can be seen while in flight. Their diets consist primarily of carrion but the Black Vulture will sometimes attack and kill prey. Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their food. By flying low, they are able to detect the gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will often follow Turkey Vultures to find food. Most of what vultures eat would make any other animal very sick, but they are strong animals with an incredible digestive system and a very strong immune system. Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually survive eating carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera and salmonella. They rid our environment of what could potentially cause the spread of diseases. Because of their eating habits, vultures would probably never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest but they play an important role in keeping our environment cleaner and definitely smelling better. They are nature’s clean-up crew. If you’d like to learn more about the animals that we share our world with, visit our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter. org. Opportunities are also available for in-home and on-site volunteers. TWRC Wildlife Center, 10801 Hammerly Boulevard, Houston, TX 77043. Call 713-468-TWRC.
