Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year.

PETER’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Two of Katy’s communities of adults with intellectual and physical disabilities gathered together August 13th at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. Adults from The Arc of Katy visited St. Peter’s special needs ministry Hearts Helping Others (H2O). They enjoyed a visit from the Journey Ice snow cone truck, which is operated by Everyday Opportunities, which serves children and adults diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

CHILD ADVOCATES OF FORT BEND RECEIVES COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD ALONGSIDE CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTERS OF TEXAS The Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, Inc. (CACTX) was recognized for its efforts on behalf of child victims of physical and sexual abuse across Texas. Recognized by First Lady Cecilia Abbott, Honorary Chair of the 32nd Annual Governor’s Volunteer Awards and the OneStar Foundation, CACTX joins a select group of individuals, groups and organizations honored for a significant and measurable contribution to their communities. Children’s Advocacy Centers are a nationally renowned solution to the challenges facing the child victims of sexual and physical abuse. At their core, the centers provide a place for representatives of law enforcement, legal, medical and Child Protective Service organizations to coordinate the pursuit of justice for perpetrators and therapeutic healing for victims and their families. Forging partnerships with community volunteers, child welfare advocates and Government Agencies, local centers also provide the much needed support these families need while seeking justice.

CHILD ADVOCATES OF FORT BEND NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR THE 24TH ANNUAL CASA CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR Proceeds from the Christmas Home Tour help Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB) advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children in this community. Through its two programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), the agency touches the lives of more than 400 young victims each month. Tour hours are 10 AM until 4 PM on December 11th and 12th with a candlelight tour on December 11th from 6 PM until 9 PM. Sponsors and volunteers are needed to support the Home Tour. ENERGY CITY NEW HORIZONS MUSIC PROGRAMS New Horizons music programs provide access for adults interested in making music in a supportive environment where your best is good enough! There are no auditions to join the band, people can just come along and bring their instrument! The Energy City New Horizons group is in its seventh year and is extremely fortunate to have the support of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, including use of their facilities, as a home for practice sessions and performances. Semester dues are currently set at $100. Rehearsals are held at the ArtsNow facility on Memorial between Wilcrest and Beltway 8 (in the same shopping strip as TJMaxx). Strings rehearse Tuesdays at 10 AM and Thursdays at 6 PM. Symphonic Band rehearses Tuesdays at 11 AM and Thursdays at 7 PM. We will hold a concert Sunday, November 22nd at 2:30 PM at The Well (next door to ArtsNow). Proceeds from these events directly benefit Shield Bearer’s human trafficking recovery and intimate partner violence prevention programs. Houston is the number one human trafficking hub in the country due to interstate access and the close proximity to the border and Port of Houston. Many victims of human trafficking are children and in desperate need of mental health services for trauma, addiction and depression. Intimate partner violence (also known as domestic violence or dating violence) is the most common cause of injury for women ages 18-44. As many as 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, which equates to more than 10 million people per year in the United States. The community is encouraged to learn more and get involved.

On Thursday, November 5th, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) will feature Elizabeth Barrow as our guest speaker. Elizabeth’s presentation will be “shade gardening.” She will discuss the pros and cons of gardening in the shade, specific difficulties when gardening in the shade and hints and tips for success. She will also touch on design principles and introduce us to some shade plants suited to our area. Elizabeth is a long-time gardener in the Houston area and former owner of a garden center in the Richmond-Rosenberg area. She is a Texas Certified Nursery Professional, a Fort Bend County Master Gardener and a sought after speaker for area garden clubs.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN’S QUARTER MARATHON EVENT JANUARY 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Registration opened September 15, 2015 for this new Houston running event. Girls Inc. of Greater Houston’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by developing programs of informal education that empowers girls to live and succeed in an inequitable world. The 10th Annual Katy Wine Fest hosted by the Cinco Ranch Rotary will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Café at Brookwood, located at 1752 FM 1489 in Brookshire. For his Eagle service project, Jacob designed and built Adirondack chairs and tables for the recently constructed Lone Survivor Foundation Retreat Center in Crystal Beach, TX. This retreat center will treat members of our military who have combat stress, TBI, chronic pain issues and military sexual trauma. Jacob led over 20 volunteers who spend 225+ hours on this project. In addition to being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, he has also successfully earned 38 merit badges, completed 162 hours of service, camped 126 nights and hiked over 230 miles. He held numerous leadership positions (Patrol Leader, Chaplin’s Aid, Instructor, Troop Guide, Assistant Patrol Leader) and he is currently the Troop 584 Senior Patrol Leader. He attended and staffed National Youth Leadership Training and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Jacob will be a senior at Seven Lakes High School in the fall and plans to attend college to pursue a career in medicine.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, brown sugar, butter and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in marshmallow creme until well incorporated and melted. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth; spread in prepared pan. Let cool before cutting into squares.
