• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

This year’s Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 7th - 9th. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained on the website (http://comptroller.texas.gov/taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/), all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

Chocolate Raspberry Cloud
INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies 3 tablespoons butter, melted 2 cups heavy cream 1/2 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup raspberry syrup 1 (9 ounce) package thin chocolate wafers 1/4 cup fresh raspberries (optional) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves (optional) 1/8 cup semisweet chocolate curls (optional)
DIRECTIONS: To Make Crust: In a small bowl, mix together crushed cookies and melted butter. Press mixture into a 9 inch pie pan using your hands or the back of a spoon. Refrigerate until firm. To Make Filling: Whip 2 cups of cream until soft peaks form. Continue to whip while slowly adding sugar, followed by vanilla extract. Whip until stiff, then stir in 1/2 cup raspberry syrup. Spread a layer of whipped cream mixture 1/2 inch deep into bottom of pie crust. Cover with a layer of chocolate cookies. Cover with another 1/2 inch layer of whipped cream mixture, followed by more cookies. If desired, slightly overlap the cookies, dipping them in whipped cream mixture before placing them in pan. Continue alternating layers until cookies are gone, and finish with a layer of whipped cream mixture. Cover carefully. Refrigerate at least 12 hours before serving. Pie will keep up to 3 days. Just prior to serving, whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and cover pie with a fresh layer. If desired, garnish with fresh raspberries, mint leaves and chocolate curls. Dark Chocolate And Cinnamon Frozen Custard
INGREDIENTS: 2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream 1/2 cup milk 3/4 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder 1 ounce high-quality dark chocolate (85%), finely chopped 5 egg yolks 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, plus more for dusting DIRECTIONS:
Whisk cream, milk, sugar and cocoa powder in a saucepan over medium heat until the mixture is thoroughly combined and the sugar has dissolved. Bring almost to a simmer and stir in dark chocolate until melted. Whisk egg yolks into the cream mixture and cook until batter is slightly thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a container, cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least 6 hours. Stir cinnamon into chilled custard batter and freeze in an ice cream machine following manufacturer’s instructions. Cypress Ranch High School incoming senior David Zhou was selected as a senator for the American Legion Boys Nation in the Washington, D.C. area, July 17th - 24th, according to an American Legion release. Boys Nation is an annual American Legion program that includes civic training, leadership development and a focus on Americanism. Zhou previously served as a state party delegate and platform committee member at Texas Boys State, which had more than 1,000 student delegates. Zhou will represent Texas along with Michael McDowell of Providence Classical School.

During their eight days at Boys Nation, 98 senators (two from each state with the exception of Hawaii) will learn from a hands-on approach how the U.S. Senate and the federal government function.

Participants are divided into two political parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists, each of which conducts a party convention, sets a platform and nominates members for elected offices, including Boys Nation president, vice president and party leaders. Each senator will also write, introduce and debate a bill of his choosing before an appropriate Senate committee and if successful at that level the legislation will be voted on by the whole Senate. Bills passing the Senate are later signed or vetoed by the Boys Nation president. The young men also had an opportunity to tour the National Mall, including the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall and Korean War Memorial. They also presented a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery, saw the Iowa Jima Memorial and visited Capitol Hill for meetings with their state’s U.S. senators. They also had the opportunity to visit the Pentagon and the White House as well. In addition, delegates visited The American Legion’s Washington office to meet with lobbyists and subject matter experts and attend a dinner at a nearby Legion post hosted by National Commander Mike Helm of Nebraska. “I am extremely excited for this opportunity to not only represent CFISD, but the entire state of Texas, at Boys Nation,” Zhou said. “I hope that I will be able to apply the political insight I gain in my own community and my future endeavors.” Zhou serves as vice president of Key Club, captain of Science Olympiad, president of the UIL math and computer science teams and treasurer of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Cypress Ranch. He hopes to attend the University of Pennsylvania and become a computer science entrepreneur.

The Mustangs (30-6) shut out Martin (28-5) behind a solid pitching outing from senior Brent Hebert (6-1), who threw five innings of five-hit ball with two walks and two strikeouts. Hebert was named the Championship Most Valuable Player for his effort. The Mustangs were led offensively by senior Elijah MacNamee, who continued his hot streak in the postseason with a 2-for-2 effort and a run scored. Head coach John Pope, who led the Mustangs to their first championship in 2012, said it was tough to compare both championship teams. “It’s hard to say. Both had good defense and good hitting and fought hard,” he said. “We have an expectation here where the kids get used to winning and playing in a tough district prepares you for this stage. This team came together and battled through it all year. This is what we do all that hard work for. We did it again and I’m so proud of our kids.”

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Soccer, Flag Football and Cheerleading this fall. Our address is 5901 N. Fry Rd. in Katy, Texas 77449. We will be having Upward Soccer for children 4 yrs. by September 1, 2015 through 6th Grade. Our Flag Football and Cheerleading will be for children in K this year through 6th Grade. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team!
