Take Precautions Against Crime during Holidays
The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents:
Happy Holidays! December 2012
• Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check

the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.
Get Into the Christmas Spirit
Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday.

Hanukkah
In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.
HAPPY Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1 Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. st
Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. Mentors must attend a one-time, district orientation before they begin mentoring at the school. Then, it just takes 30 minutes a week to truly make a difference in the life of a child. Once you have completed the training and background check, an administrator at Smith will work with you to match you with a student who would be the best fit for you. If you enjoy working with children and making a true difference in people’s lives, the mentor program at Smith Middle School is just for you!! We are especially looking for quality male mentors to serve as role models to our male students. District mentor training dates are being held on the following dates this school year: Jan. 31st, Feb. 12th, Feb. 28th and March 28th. Please contact Melissa Laroussini, Mentor Program Coordinator, at 281213-1026 or by email at Melissa.laroussini@cfisd.net for more information. Thank you!

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB SUPPORTS HEB LITERACY PROJECT
During September, Cypress Ranch Key Club decided to team up with HEB’s “Read 3” project, a book drive to support children’s literacy and education. The project encourages the community to “Grow young minds, read 3 times a week.” Cypress Fairbanks ISD supported the project and other CFISD schools participated in various ways as well to help the great cause. Cypress Ranch Key Club began by holding a very successful book drive. The club collected many different types of children’s books, donating a total of over 1,500 books to HEB. Over 100 members directly participated and some members even donated over 100 books each to help give children the opportunity to be exposed to and enjoy literature. The Key Club then contacted HEB to set up a date and time to not only bring the books, but to read to children in the store’s reading room. Once the Key

One of the Key Club members, Jonathan Stelly, even dressed up as the HEB “Buddy” mascot to encourage the children to come to the room to get involved in the fun. Cy-Fair ISD sent both a photographer and a videographer to HEB to film the Key Club in action. Stories about this service project were featured in the eConnection weekly employee newsletter and in a story on the District News posted on www.cfisd.net, the district’s website.

The best part of the whole experience was after they were finished with the volunteering, members got to all sit together and watch the baseball game. Students had the chance to bond over nachos, ice cream and the singing of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Key Club member Chase Parisher said, “It’s lots of fun and I get to meet new faces every time. Events in the planning stage for later in the year are Daisy Day, Brownie Day and “Me and My Guy.” We are also working on an event for our older girls. We know lots of our troops attended the B.I.G. event, but so far we only have a picture of troop 16239. This “cover girl” troop picture also included Cadette Erin B. and Senior Juliette Kristina B. They certainly look as if they had a great day! January 11th – 13th is our Leader/Daughter weekend, when our leaders spend some special time with their OWN daughters! We’ll be back in the hill country and looking forward to crafts, campfire sing-alongs and the dutch oven cobbler cook-off, along with the always hilarious talent show. Hiking, horseback riding and a climbing wall may also be on the agenda for some of our group. We’ll hope it is warm enough to play in the river, but whatever the weather, we know we’ll have a great time! Shopping in Wimberley on the way home makes a great weekend even better! There are rumors that some of our leaders and daughters actually like that part best! Girl Scouting in the United States has been developing girls of courage, confidence and character since 1912. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints new leadership
H
On October 28th, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the appointment of a new ecclesiastical leader, David R. Lauck, who will serve as the president of the Cypress Texas Stake in Northwest Houston. He succeeds Stirling D. Pack Jr., who successfully completed nine years of service.
ap py H ol id ay s!
The Church is organized geographically into stakes, which are similar to a Catholic diocese. In his new assignment, President Lauck will preside over 12 congregations in Cypress, Waller, Fairfield, Bridgeland, Tomball and Northwest Houston. Stake presidents typically serve for approximately 9-10 years and come from a variety of backgrounds. President Lauck was raised in the Sugarland/ Missouri City area. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in business. Currently he resides in Northwest Houston and is a business development manager with Shell Oil Company, where he has worked for over 21 years. The Church has no salaried ministry, so President Lauck will continue to work full time while fulfilling his new ecclesiastical responsibilities. He and his wife, Leanne, have been married for 23 years. Houston has been their home for 14 of those years. They have three children - one currently serving a two-year church mission in New York, one attending college and one a student in Cy-Fair I.S.D.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

During this time, worshippers will be given the opportunity to pick and choose their favorite Christmas hymns from The United Methodist Hymnal to be sung. At the 9:30 AM worship service, the Journey Praise Band will be leading worship with celebrative music. In addition, the Rev. Greg Smith will be bringing an inspiring post-Christmas message. Everyone is invited to attend these special holiday fellowship and worship opportunities. In addition, we will have a nursery available for all of our worship celebrations except the 11 PM Christmas Eve service. For more information, please call the church office at 281-859-4141. Cornerstone wishes each of you a “Merry Christmas!” and a “Happy New Year!”

2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy Falls High School
Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held: Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! For more information, contact Erin Kasperek below: erin.kasperek@cancer.org Phone: 713-706-5652 | Mobile: 281-732-8324 www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx
