DON’T GET BURNED! SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

Summer is here! Who doesn’t want to be outside, sunbathing, swimming, playing catch on the beach or just barbequing in the backyard? While summer means fun in the sun, make sure you’re not getting too much of a good thing. Avoid consequences of overexposure to the sun like sunburns, premature aging of the skin, wrinkling and skin cancer, including melanoma by practicing proper sun protection. The hours between 10 AM and 4 PM daylight savings time are the most hazardous for UV exposure in the continental United States. UV rays are the greatest during the late spring and early summer in North America. CDC recommends easy options for sun protection: Sunscreen • Use sunscreen with the sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher and both UVA and UVB protection. • Sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out in the sun for more than two hours and after you swim or do things that make you sweat. • Check the sunscreen’s expiration date. Sunscreen without an expiration date has a shelf life of no more than three years, but its shelf life is shorter if if has been exposed to high temperatures. Clothing • Wear clothing to protect exposed skin. • Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection from the sun’s UV rays. A wet t-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one. Darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. • If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, at least try to wear a t-shirt or a beach cover-up. Keep in mind that a typical t-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use other types of protection as well. Hats • Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears and neck. • For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection. • If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing clothing that covers those areas, using sunscreen with at least SPF 15 or by staying in the shade.

Sunglasses • Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from son exposure. • Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. • Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Shade • Seek shade, especially during midday hours. • You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella, tree or other shelter before you need relief from the sun. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside - even when you’re in the shade.

Master water safety Water-related activities are popular for getting physical activity and have many health benefits. Here are some tips to stay safe while having fun.

Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois 61710

A.G. Painting & Remodeling 832-715-0999

Learn how to prevent recreational water illnesses and help protect yourself and your kids. • Help kids get H2O Smartz (www.cdc.gov/bam/safety/h2o.html) about water safety. • Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children ages 1 - 4 than any other cause, except birth defects. Two to three children die every day as a result of drowning. • Always supervise children when in or around water. A responsible adult should constantly watch young children. • Teach kids to swim. Formal swimming lessons can protect young children from drowning. • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Your CPR skills could save someone’s life. • Install a four-sided fence around home pools. • Recreational boating can be a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends. Make boating safety a priority. • Wear a properly fitted life jacket every time you and your loved ones are on the water.

Beat the heat and sun Heat-related illness occurs when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded. Those at greatest risk for heat-related illness include infants and children up to 4 years of age. Even young and healthy people can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather. For heat-related illness, the best defense is prevention. • Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open. • Dress infants and children in loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. • Schedule outdoor activities carefully, for morning and evening hours. • Stay cool with cool showers or baths. • Seek medical care immediate if your child has symptoms of heat-related illness. • Just a few serious sunburns can increase you and your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. • Cover up. Clothing that covers your and your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays. • Use sunscreen with at least SPF (sun protection factor) 15 and UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) protection every time you and your child go outside. Keep mosquitoes and ticks from bugging you this summer Protect yourself and your family by preventing bites and diseases, like West Nile virus and Lyme disease, which can be transmitted by insects. • Use an effective insect repellent while playing outdoors. • Make your backyard a tick-safe zone (www.cdc.gov/ticks/avoid/in_the_ yard.html). • Check yourself and your children for ticks. Ticks are easy to remove. Prevent Injuries Each year in the United States, emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries. Falls at home and on the playground are a common cause of injury. • Check to make sure that the surfaces under playground equipment are safe, soft and well-maintained. • Supervise young children at all times around fall hazards, such as stairs and playground equipment. • Use stair gates, which can help keep a busy, active child from taking a dangerous tumble. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can occur in any sport or recreation activity. • Learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs. • Make sure kids and teens wear the right protective equipment for their sport or recreation activity. • Parents can take many actions to protect their children’s health and safety at home. • Stay smart around the house by following tips on fire prevention, microwave use and living with pets. • Learn healthy home tips for each room in the house. Young workers have high job injury rates. Hazards in the workplace, inexperience and lack of safety training may increase injury risks for young workers. • Know their rights, employer and teen worker responsibilities and what teens under 18 can’t do. Stop the violence • Kids can use electronic media to embarrass, harass or threaten their peers. Take steps to prevent electronic aggression, a term that most accurately captures all types of violence that occur electronically.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.

Towne Lake

Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

This year, a record number of students and family members enjoyed delicious treats, cold milk and delightful stories. Current and future Warriors loved seeing the teachers and the elementary principal dressed as characters from some of their favorite books. Elementary Principal Robert White dressed as a farmer and opened the night with the reading of “The Cow Loves Cookies” by Karma Wilson; Kindergarten teacher Caroline Young dressed as “Pete the Cat” in the book “Pete The Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes” written by Eric Litwin; Kindergarten teacher Kristi Lacaze dressed as “The Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly” in the book by the same name written by Simms Taback; Kindergarten teacher Danielle Heafner dressed as “Owen” in the book by the same name written by Kevin Henkes; Kindergarten teacher Tonya Jansson ended the evening with a hilarious reading of “No Sleep for the Sheep” by Karen Beaumont. HAPPY 37TH BIRTHDAY, CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL! On April 10, 2015, CCS turned 37. Current Admissions Director Angie Ramirez and former Admissions Director Vicki Moore celebrated with some delicious treats from the wonderful ladies in the secondary kitchen. To add to the fun, students enjoyed playing “Name That Tune” with music from 1978 when the school opened. From 18 middle school students in 1978 to approximately 680 students in grades K-12 in 2015, the school has definitely grown. CCS is thankful for the men and women who had the vision to start our school and those who have invested in the school over the last 37 years. Cypress Christian is committed to continuing the tradition of investing in young lives, positively impacting culture and advancing God’s Kingdom. For more historical facts and pictures, visit the CCS history page on the school website at www.CypressChristian. org.

Sponsored by Northwest Dodge and Bridgeland, the year-end celebration capped a school year that has paid tribute to 75 years of excellence dating back to the union of the Cypress and Fairbanks school systems in 1939. The free event kicked off in the front parking lot of the Berry Center with carnival amusements, games, bounce houses, a climbing wall, a juggler, unicyclist, stilt walker and a horse-and-buggy ride. More than 60 vendor booths lined the center of the carnival. Local country-western band Sawdust Road provided musical entertainment and guests dined from various food trucks. A stilt walker greets a child in the carnival section of the 75th Anniversary Festival celebration. The evening concluded inside Berry Center Stadium, where spectators were treated to performances by Martial Arts USA, the Cypress Lakes and Cypress Ranch high school drill teams and the Cy-Fair High School marching band. Student representatives from each district campus paraded into the stadium while holding a banner bearing their school’s name, then performed “We’ve Schools Everywhere,” a spin-off of the song “I’ve Been Everywhere” that listed each district school and support facility.

CORNERSTONE UMC LAUNCHES SUMMER SHOE DRIVE!

Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by MondayThursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. By donating shoes to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives. For more information or questions about the shoe drive, please contact Scott Grow at youth@cornerstoneumc.org or contact the church office at 281-859-4141.

Volunteer Opportunities CYPRESS ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org. For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests, and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOSPICE CARE (CYPRESS AREA)

Volunteers are the Heart of Hospice, they are a vital part of the hospice team. What volunteers can do to show that they care is everything from providing caregiver relief, being the friendly visitor with the smile, holding someone’s hand, providing that extra loving care and being a good listener. Volunteering can include music or pet therapy and much much more. All those interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne Harris at adharris@ odyshealth.com or 281-463-3697 (VistaCare).

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK

PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/ uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-8551982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

Kahlua® Chocolate Cheesecake

INGREDIENTS: 12 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 1/2 cup white sugar 3 eggs, room temperature 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons coffee-flavored liqueur (such as Kahlua®) 3 (1 ounce) squares milk chocolate, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 cup whipped cream for garnish (optional) 2 tablespoons Shaved chocolate, to garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). In a mixing bowl, blend cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing until fully incorporated before adding the next egg. Mix in 3 tablespoons whipping cream and the coffee-flavored liquor. Pour into an 8-inch glass pie pan. Place chocolate in a small heat-proof bowl and set aside. In a small saucepan, bring 1/2 cup whipping cream just to a boil. Pour it over the chopped chocolate; let chocolate soften for about 3 minutes. Whisk until smooth. Drizzle chocolate in a spiral pattern over filling. Stir lightly with tip of a paring knife to achieve a marbling effect. Set the pie pan in a larger pan with water that comes halfway up side of pie pan. Bake in preheated oven until firm in the center, about 55 minutes. Cool completely and refrigerate, covered with plastic wrap, overnight. Garnish with whipped cream piped or dolloped around edges and shaved chocolate in center. http://allrecipes.com/ Submitted by golddigge June 2015
