BRIDGELAND’S ANNUAL SPOOKTACULAR HOWL-O-WEEN FEST

Bridgeland presents the 7th Annual Spooktacular Howl-O-Ween Fest, Saturday, October 24th, 10 AM - 4 PM in Oak Meadow Park. Pooches and people alike are sure to have a ‘dog-gone’ good time at our seventh annual Howl-O-Ween Fest as Todd Oliver, a former finalist on America’s Got Talent, wows local audiences with his crowd-and-canine approved performances. A group that has traveled alongside the Ringling Brothers, Panfilov’s Pets, will also bring along its pack of circus trained felines and talented Jack Russell Terriers. Other highlights include performances from Splash Dogs and Houston Canine Frisbee Disc Club, a ‘haute-dog’ fashion show and costume contest, pet product and service vendors, onsite pet adoptions, trick-or-treating, pumpkin decorating, a family fall fest area sponsored by The Foundry, a farmers market with a pumpkin patch and a whole pack of local food trucks. GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil.

Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWS CYPRESS CHRISTIAN STUDENTS VISIT CRIME LAB CCS forensic science students visited the Crime Laboratory at the Regional Headquarters of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Students enjoyed an interactive tour of the facility and were able to see how evidence is processed and analyzed. This open house event was part of National Forensic Science Week, open to the public in recognition of the important role that forensic science plays in criminal investigations.

Three CFISD teachers were recently named winners in the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union 9th annual Extreme Classroom Makeover Essay Contest. In the contest, teachers from all grade levels submitted essays explaining why they were most deserving of the $500 grand prize to help them create an ideal learning environment for their students. The winners are Elisa Rea from Jowell Elementary School, Joan Pearson from Hamilton Middle School and Sandra Windham from Cypress Creek High School. The teachers received their prize money at a reception at the Cy-Fair FCU’s Jones Road Branch on August 14th.

The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media speciﬁed on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difﬁcult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to ﬁgure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW).
