In November and December, we will meet twice monthly to consider the amazingly creative means by which our Almighty God reaches out to communicate with us, because He loves us. We’re often deaf to it, like a radio not tuned in. Discovering together is wonderful! Open invitation to all Twin Lakes women. Call Carol 713-305-9809 or email her at carol. monahan@me.com.

TWIN LAKES PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP

The Twin Lakes playgroup has now been a part of the neighborhood for nearly two years and has at its core approximately 10 international families meeting every Thursday morning beginning at 10 AM-12 PM at member’s homes. Our children have grown up together for two years, which is a significant length of time in their short histories. During this time, we have also had new babies added to the group and so the group continues even as some of our older children move on to school. We are an extremely open and friendly group and encourage any parents/caregivers of pre-school children in the neighborhood to get in touch for an opportunity for the children to play while the adults chat in comfortable home environs. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

BOOK CLUB - BOOK DISCUSSION WITH AUTHOR AND EDITOR Twin Lakes Women’s Association is having a special Book Club meeting in January. We invite all women to join us on Thursday, January 21st at 7 PM in the clubhouse for a discussion of Richard Cunningham’s novel, ‘Maude Brown’s Baby,’ with Richard and his editor and wife Lily Ann. Richard is a freelance science writer and commercial photographer and he is the brother of Diana Holden who lives here in Twin Lakes. Here is a summary of the book: Orphaned by the hurricane that wrecked Galveston in September 1900, aspiring photojournalist Donald Brown has all but abandoned hope of learning who his parents might have been. He exploits what most consider a

handicap. With extraordinarily close vision he discovers clues to his origins in the photo of himself as an infant. He helps solve a mystery by analyzing film from a damaged camera and he gains the friendship of a young woman in distress. Donald’s quest begins September 8, 1918, anniversary of the Great Storm. War in Europe drags on and he must soon register for the draft. Meanwhile, his friend Jake Miller needs help finding a news photographer who didn’t return after an assignment in Galveston. Jake, a mercurial and ambitious womanizer, has ties to the island’s nascent mafia. Donald finds himself drawn in as clues point to murder. When Donald’s new friend, Clara, reveals a cache of photos that survived the storm, he discovers both the tragedy of his family and the source of his passion for photography.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Do you want to acknowledge a family member or neighbor’s birthday, anniversary or graduation? Would you like to express your appreciation for an act of kindness? Do you have a photo, a commentary or words of wisdom to share with your Twin Lakes neighbors?

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NORTHWEST HARRIS COUNTY RESTORE The Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County ReStore is a retail outlet that handles donated building materials, construction supplies, appliances and furniture, which are then offered to the general public at greatly reduced prices. The ReStore is open Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM. A key goal of the ReStore is to re-cycle and thus reduce the amount of solid waste placed into our vital landfills. Please keep the ReStore in mind for both donations and for purchases. Donation pick-up is available for large items or large quantities. All of the proceeds are used by Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing for deserving families. Visit the ReStore at 13350 Jones Rd. 77070 North-Houston or call 281-890-5585. HOLIDAY SECURITY During the holidays there is an unfortunate increase in home and vehicle burglaries. There are a few things you can do to deter thieves. When shopping for those gifts, secure them in the trunk of your car or out of sight. Visible shopping bags are an invitation to thieves. Be aware of people around you and if you feel someone is following you or watching you, do not get in the car. Many shopping malls offer security officer that will escort you to your car. Take advantage of that service.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

It’s no secret that piles of unchecked holiday mail and newspapers can tip off burglars to an empty house and lead to holiday break-ins. If you’re traveling during the holidays, it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to help keep up your home’s appearances so it doesn’t have that vacant look about it. Even a small favor such as asking your neighbor to occasionally park their car in your driveway can improve your home security. Use timers to turn lights on and off in the living areas of your home to give the appearance that someone is there.

CHRISTMAS TREE TIPS Permission to reprint granted by the National Safety Council, a membership organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. For many people, decorating the Christmas tree is a favorite part of the holiday. The National Safety Council offers some safety tips to make sure a mishap doesn’t spoil your holiday season.

We Create Beautiful Smiles!

Christmas Trees A real tree can add to the spirit of Christmas by filling your home with beauty and the scent of pine. But a real tree can also pose a fire hazard. Each year, more than 400 residential fires involve Christmas trees and tragically nearly 40 deaths and 100 injuries result from those fires. • Try to select a fresh tree by looking for one that is green. The needles of pines and spruces should bend and not break and should be hard to pull off the branches. On fir species, a needle pulled from a fresh tree will snap when bent, much like a fresh carrot. Also, look for a trunk sticky with sap. • Cut off about two inches of the trunk and put the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the stand filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. • Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways. • If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Tree lights • Only use indoor lights indoors (and outdoor lights only outdoors). Look for the UL label. Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets. • Also, use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs. • Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house.

Tree ornaments • Always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. • Read labels before you use materials that come in jars, cans and spray cans. • Never place lighted candles on a tree or near any flammable materials. • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. • Do not hang popcorn chains and candy canes on the tree when small children are present. They may think that other tree ornaments are also edible.

NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS One of our traditional fireworks holidays is approaching. Please be considerate of your neighbors while enjoying the tradition of fireworks on New Years’ Eve. Don’t use people, cars or structures as targets for bottle rockets and roman candles. It would be tragic to cause injury or damage on this exciting holiday. • Fireworks cannot be used in the neighborhood parks. • Do not direct any fireworks at anything or anyone. • Do not shoot fireworks off before 9 AM or after 10 PM on any day other than New Year’s Eve. • Avoid shooting fireworks that shoot up or fly through the air. • If a car comes down the street, get out of its way and do not light any fireworks while it is passing. • Don’t make the “fireworks holiday” turn into a month of fireworks. • Frightened pets must be taken inside while the fireworks are in use. Protect your pets at all times. • MOST IMPORTANT: Clean up the mess! Sweep the streets and drives (and, don’t forget to pick up the items that accidentally went into your neighbor’s yard).

Twin Lakes

If you have a problem with someone that is shooting off the fireworks, please call the Constable’s office or Harris County Sheriff’s office and ask for an officer to come by. Celebrate responsibly and always have a designated driver!

Shalom Cypress Hebrew School is now open for enrollment for the Spring 2016 year. This upcoming year Morah Rina is going to concentrate on conversational Hebrew with the children. Bar/ Bat Mitzvah programs are also available. A special Mazel Tov to Jordan Loeb on her Bat Mitzvah! She did a wonderful job reading from the Torah. Our community is very proud of her. For this upcoming month, please see below our upcoming event schedule for this month: December 11th & December 12th: Services will be held Friday evening and Saturday morning. Rabbi Rami will lead the services. Each service is followed by dinner & lunch respectively. December 12th: Hanukkah Celebration. Traditional songs, dreidels, lots of latkes and more fun. Don’t forget to bring your own Menorah and candles so we can all light them together! December 3rd, 10th and 17th: Our weekly coffee night is held each Thursday night. Rabbi Wolbe and Rabbi Goldstein take turns in leading our discussions.

The 110 member Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra is among six international high school orchestras that will perform at the conference. Every year, groups of every type and size from all over the world apply for the honor of performing at the conference. The Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra was chosen based on its excellent resume of past contest performances and on a recorded audition submitted in March. The invitation to participate is an honor and culmination of the orchestra members many years of hard work and practice under the leadership of their director, Mr. Christopher Mustell. The orchestra recognizes the once-in-a-lifetime experience and looks forward to representing Cypress Ridge, CFISD and Houston. The expenses for this opportunity are challenging and expected to run $1,500 per student. Community support will be vital in making sure every symphony orchestra member may participate. Personal and business sponsorships will help support the program and reduce the student musicians’ costs. Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club will conduct FREE vision screening to children from six months of age and older at the Jersey Village Holiday in the Park, to be held Sunday December 6th, from 1-4 PM at Clark Henry Park. This vision screening uses a unique special camera that takes a photo of the child’s eyes and within seconds relates a pass or refer status. Those with the refer status will need to have a professional eye examination at a local optometrist. Vision problems are the leading disability in children, who are unaware that they cannot see properly. They cannot compare their vision to others and vision problems do not cause pain or inflammation, so parents, teachers and caregivers are unaware that the child has visual difficulties. Eighty percent of learning is visual. The Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club has recently purchased the Plusoptix Vision Screener for this community service project. This is part of a nationwide KidSight initiative through Lions Clubs International to screen children early for vision problems. Please bring your children to the Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club booth at Holiday in the Park for this important screening, which takes only a minute. To schedule a free vision screening at your day care or church, please contact: Sandy Martin, Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club Vision Screening Program, 281-550-2798 or bikee77095@yahoo.com.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016 “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: Thru December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press.
